How To Choose The Best Sunscreen In 4 Simple Steps

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

There are hundreds of sunscreens out there and it can be super confusing to navigate. As a doctor, I've had multiple people ask me how they should pick a sunscreen. This includes people with acne prone skin, dry skin or just looking for good sun protection. So I've come up with a 4 step system to help you pick the right sunscreen for your skin.
The four steps:
0:30 Spectrum of Activity - Choose Broad Spectrum (UVA + UVB protection rather than UVB only)
1:10 SPF (Sun Protection Factor) - Choose SPF 30+
2:00 Sunscreen ingredients - Both Physical (aka. Mineral or Inorganic Sunscreens) and Chemical (aka. Organic) have different pros and cons. Physical sunscreens are better for people with sensitive skin such as people with acne, rosacea or dermatitis like eczema. Chemical sunscreens tend to have a better cosmetic result.
5:03 Formulation - Lotions and roll on tend to provide better protection than aerosols (spray on) sunscreens
Water resistance is a useful feature for people using sunscreen before playing sport. Moisturing sunscreen is better for people with dry skin.

    1) pick a sunscreen that has both UVA and UVB / broad spectrum 2) SPF 30 is the best choice, not much different between SPF 30 and SPF 50. 3) pick physical aka Inorganic/ mineral for sensitive skins 4) roll one and lotions are the best

How about sunscreen that is not harmful for the marine environment? I think this is also a big thing to consider when buying a sunscreen, specially for people that go to the beach. If you go swimming you don't want to be polluting the sea affecting the health of marine ecosystems.

Hi REHENDHI MV, thank you for the suggestion - I will add it to my list of future potential topics. In the meantime, I would suggest you have a look at the following website to get more information about dry skin: www.dermnetnz.org/topics/dry-skin/ If you need help regarding your skin, I would encourage you to see your family doctor in the first instance. This is because there are some medical conditions that can mimic dry skin, but require very different treatment to plain dry skin. For example some people can have a condition called 'atopic dermatitis', which may look like dry skin but often requires prescription creams as part of its treatment. If you haven't seen a doctor about your skin in the past, I would encourage you to get a check up so that you can get a proper diagnosis about what's causing your dry skin. Thanks again for your suggestion!

  • @DocUnlock

Good question! I discuss this in my '11 things to know about sunscreen' video. The bottom line is that if you are going to spend more than 10-15 minutes outside on a high UV day (ie UV index >3), then you should use sunscreen. In real life use, sunscreen doesn't completely block UVB so your body will still be able to make enough vitamin D. I discuss references to studies in the '11 things' video

Hi! I loved the video! I have some questions... Should you combine moisturizer lotion with sunscreen? I ask because I always assumed sunscreen already moistures the skin... Is that true? Does it matter if you apply one right after the other? Does the order matter?

  • @DocUnlock

Some (but not all) sunscreens are formulated with a moisturiser built in. If you have dry skin, you can try one of those and see if it suits your skin. Otherwise it is fine to apply moisturizers together with sunscreen. Here is an article that talks about this point in more detail: health.howstuffworks.com/skin-care/moisturizing/basics/should-you-put-moisturizer-or-sunscreen-on-your-face-first-.htm

Hi Tara. In general, chemical and physical sunscreens both provide good sun protection but have different pros and cons. For sensitive skin, physical sunscreens tend to irritate the skin less than chemical sunscreen. The downside is that physical sunscreens can leave a white streak especially if you have dark skin. If you're looking for specific medical advice about which sunscreen is good for your skin (especially as you have lupus) I would suggest talking to your GP or dermatologist.
