Important ‼️ pocket diapers will usually come with microfiber inserts...these cannot be placed against baby's skin because it will severely dry them out, so make sure if you use a hybrid you dont purchase microfiber inserts

If you don’t want to put up with having to rinse the poo off of the diaper/liner. You can get biodegradable/disposable bamboo liners that go over the cloth. It’s nice to be able to toss any solids in the trash and just clean the diaper in the wash. Less mess.

I’ll never understand this bc both my babies have runny breastmilk poops. Even when we started solids, it was a mixture of mushy wetness so it goes straight through. They make reusable stay dry liners that are a dark grey and I’d go with that tbh! Poop will always stay on just the liners and if they do start to stain, just buy more. They’re not super expensive.

I know this is an old comment, but I'm curious: how many pre-folds did you have (per kid)? That system sounds like a great system. From what I've seen it doesn't *look* that complicated as long as you get the routine down. There's so much laundry with a baby anyway

Love love love my Nora's Nursery pocket diapers! I actually just got a new package of them delivered while I was watching this video 😂. I'm still relatively new to cloth diapering, but one thing I'd say is I don't wash my inserts separately from the shell. I do separate for drying, I line dry the water proof part for longevity of the diaper and throw the inserts into the dryer. I don't have a convenient place to hang dry outside so I have a line rigged up in my laundry room and I put a fan on the diapers and they are completely dry in two hours. But again, my son is only three months old and we've only been cloth diapering for a few weeks now so do with that what you will.

It was like $5 a diaper or something like that. I love them so much and they have adorable patterns. You can choose also the inserts you want to have as well (i.e. trifold if you have a big wetter, etc.).

Great video! I use all of the styles you mentioned, lol, for different situations! I use pockets mainly at home. Then I use all in ones in the diaper bag or downstairs because it’s easier to just carry a bunch of all in ones downstairs instead of all of the stuffing options for pockets. There are so many options of inserts/prefolds /flats/boosters you can stuff into pockets, it’s both annoying and awesome. I started with cotton babies econobum shells and pad folded prefolds 14 years ago with my daughter! Some of those covers and prefolds are still usable after 7 kids, for my 5 month old! It is crazy! I also love love those flip diapers covers you mentioned. I used those mainly with my twins and you can pad fold and stuff basically anything in them too. The liners are eh, ok. Poo always leaked over the edges onto everything inside the diaper anyways (cover, insert, liner) so it’s just another thing to wash. But if your baby is sensitive to wetness, then cut up a fleece blanket into homemade liners and it works great to keep rashes away. Idk where I’m going with all of this but, I really enjoyed your description, thank you!

Flats and fitted are my favorites! Easiest to wash, most cost effective to dry, and they fit both of my babies, my 10 month old and my 26 month old all fit the same diapers👌😊 we use pocket diapers for nighttime diapers because they feel drier for babes. So my kids stay asleep through the night because its more comfortable than a cotton diaper is when wet. Micro fleece pulls the wet away from babe!😊 we cloth diaper 24/7, weve even taken them on vacations with us, but it totally doesnt have to be! 80/20 works 10/90 works do what works for your family and dont stress about it😊 Awesome video, and a great one to send people who ask us about ours!

There was no such thing as disposable diapers when I was young. Everyone had cloth diapers and used 'plastic pants' which was a full plastic panty to go over the diaper. Wet diapers got washed, Dirty diapers went straight to the bathroom and was SUBMERGED IN THE TOILET...because thats were poop goes. Holding the end of the diaper we would flush the toilet and use the swirling water act like small washing machine. Ya might do this more than twice with some diapers and then you'd fold it over, ring the water out and drop it in your diaper pail, until wash day. No biggie and the water in your toilet is the same water in your tap that you drink and cook with and water your lawn with, so as long as you keep a clean toilet, there's nothing gross about it. Whats gross is letting your child sit in a diaper full of their acidy, skin burning poop. If your baby's bottom is pink, red or has a rash, his/her urine or poop is super acidic and burning their tender skin and those wipes youre using are going to hurt that baby because of the chemicals. If your baby cries or screams when you use a wipe then you need to rub your arm with sand till its raw and place one of those wipes on your bare skin so you have an understanding of what youre doing to your baby. Personal experience is the best teacher! AND YOUR GOING TO GET POOP ON YOU!! ...that's why they make soap!

I love our applecheeks pocket diapers. Currently using them on our third child and also loaned them to a friend before my third was born. They have held up well. I don't put the insert in the pocket, I lay it on top and there are small elastics in the corners that I tuck the insert into. So easy, and I can dry the inserts with heat and put them out in the sun without damaging the elastics on the outer shell. Love that it is getting more popular ☺️

Not sure if you have already heard this tip, but if not here ya go…. When we were cloth diapering we would cut fleece into the the same size as the inserts and place then on top of the pocket or insert ( the fleece would sit against the baby’s bottom.) The fleece also wicks the moisture away from baby’s skin to help keep them more comfortable until they are changed. This would stop the poop from touching the insert or pocket or all in one material and thus eliminating your need to get water all over the place when your spraying your diapers clean. Simply remove the fleece, hold over the toilet, spray clean. Put everything into hamper/ wet bag for cleaning.

For me, the only cloth diaper that makes any sense is the all in one. And I don’t see anyone bringing this up, but I prefer my diapers made in the USA or just anywhere that isn’t China. Did everyone forget the toy recall from years ago bc baby toys were poisoned with lead, made in China? It seems like everybody forgot. I don’t trust anything made there, especially not for babies and small children. It’s not always about price.

I think for cloth diaper newbie’s, a flushable diaper liner is a good idea. You can put the thin liner over any diaper insert etc. and if the baby had a poo, you can just fold the liner up, around the poo and flush it. That’s even more convenient, than the stench of a trashcan of disposable diapers. And they literally are biodegradable and super affordable.

Great overview! I have a mix of everything, including diff kinds of boosters (what you call liners). You can also use disposable or non disposable liners which can help with getting rid of the poop, you just rinse the liner instead of the whole nappy. My advice is to try a nappy library if you have one locally. They will loan you different kinds of nappies for you to try them without a huge money investment and then you can go ahead and buy the ones you like.

We use Mama Koala brand pocket diapers. We have 94 diapers since they went on a massive sale and my husband got hooked on them after I said to give them a try. He was excited to surprise us with so many different patterns. But the nice thing is that this next baby can use them and then they are getting divided between 2 of my 3 SILs who want to cloth diaper. We have the microfiber inserts that came with them and then bought both bamboo charcoal inserts and hemp inserts to help at nighttime since he is a very heavy wetter. It took somewhere between 3.5-4 months old to get started when he was finally at 8lbs. He was a little over 4lbs when born at full term.

We use Grovia brand hybrids and love them. I feel like there is a lot less youtube content on hybrids, but they are awesome, so thanks for including them in the lineup even though you don't personally use them. You touched on one of the main perks which is: you really don't need very many. We have 4 covers and 12 inserts and that is enough to cover a full day for us most days! It's also a lot less laundry since most of the time only the inserts get soiled. Another option not shown here is wool covers. We have 2 Sloomb brand wool covers that we pair with snapless fitteds (using a safety pin for the ultimate retro look ha). They are SO DELUX. The covers do require more care and handwashing, but it is really not intimidating once you dive in.

We are currently using the Esembly system. My youngest is 6 months old now. My boys tend to be heavy wetters so we use two over night inserts, two liners and the Esembly fitted diaper with it’s cover. The system is great for clean up and as long as I put the whole thing together, so it can be grab and change like a disposable, even my husband can change diapers. I have yet to use the hemp or bamboo inserts for any of my kiddos (six in total) however I have read great reviews. We used prefolds with a fleece/pul cover for my second oldest daughter because she frequently got UTI’s. We have also use Pampers Hybrid diapers, but they have discontinued the disposable inserts. Charlie Banana makes disposable inserts that work with the Pampers Hybrid diaper. GroVia is another great brand that makes an All in One, Hybrid with disposable inserts/regular inserts and they have prefold cloth diapers as well. The disposable inserts for the GroVia diapers are also ASTM biodegradable.

We cut up a fleece blanket to line the diaper with. Poop just falls off of the fleece liner to make for a super easy cleaning. You just cut a fleece blanket up to the size of your insert. Cotton, hemp and bamboo are the most absorbent. I did a microfibre diaper in the beginning, and my son would leak through it instantly since he is a heavy wetter. It really made me hate cloth diapering to begin with. I decided to give it another try right before his second birthday. I got a stash of used cotton (Mother-Ease) diaper. Game changer!!! Mother-Ease bedwetter pants, and overnight inserts are amazing if you ever want to try cloth overnight. The overnight diapers hold 500 ml (2 cups) and the bedwetter pants hold 600 ml (2 1/2 cups). We have never had a leak with the bedwetter pants!

I do this for my friends who are interested in cloth, it’s fun to see someone else do it! My favorite styles are flats and covers, you can add inserts/boosters/liners to them to make it more suited to your baby. My second favorite are pockets with flats as the insert 👌🏻 both are easy as pie just fold your flat into a rectangle and lay it or stuff it inside.

Best part is the pocket opens on both ends which means no need to un-stuff before washing, the inserts can agitate out on their own.

We use prefolds and covers, which I love. Additionally, my husband and I both work very full time jobs, so we have a diaper service, dydee diaper in Michigan. Seriously, all the bennies of cloth without having the diaper laundry. It's the only way we're still doing it at 2. We've used hardly any disposables up to this point because we have a service. It's all about the tradeoffs.

There is also the option of wool! A lot of people are intimidated by it because you have to hand wash *most* covers but you can’t go a couple weeks without washing so it really isn’t in work. You can also use wool pants over fitteds or prefolds just makes sure anything used to cover a diaper is lanolized which is very easy to do! It’s great for anyone looking to use all natural fibers.

I feel like I never see anyone talk about them, so I always have to throw it out there lol. We probably only NEED like 6 or so shells for laundry every 3ish days, but they’re cute, so I have more. It's kinda funny how our diapering journey has evolved over 4 kids. We started with Green Mountain Diapers prefolds and Snappies and covers (if you do the "Jelly Roll" it's bomb proof!), then moved to pockets, then same for our 3rd except we started having a chronic rash issue and she's in disposables till things get sorted out. Now for our upcoming May baby we're thinking we may try All in One or All in Two diapers to satisfy that desire for convenience, with a disposable liner when they get to eating solids or need rash creams. And I have a friend pushing me to try EC. :)

Also I found with the prefold/cover combo it tended to be that the cover could get real stinky because I assume the gusset would start getting wet (either cause they peed a lot or you didn't change it soon enough or just cause) so we didn't often reuse the covers. But, the main thing there is that the prefolds are cheap and so are the covers, so it was really cost effective if you needed to get a few more.

So, I've been using pockets more like a shell diaper and just realized. I only had 6 to start off with for the first three months of her life. So i had the microfiber liner on top and a thick insert, inside the pocket liner. As a newborn I would switch out the liner only if the insert felt dry. If her poops touched the pocket then I would change the whole thing out. I didn't notice any issues doing that and she has had no issues with microfiber touching her butt. But that's just my baby, every one's kid is different. Now that I have watched more videos and honestly, build a bigger stash, I and figuring out the best method with less padding. As she does more tummy time and trying to craw, the amount of padding wasn't allowing her to have the best rang of motion. Also, she is CHUNKY and Tall. she is in 1 year clothes. She is turning four months this week! Its the size of the diaper as well as her height. So let me make her diapers more trim and see if that helps.

okay so liners, there are multiple types bamboo disposable other disposable and fleece reusable / sposie bamboo an other are disposable ones that you put on the diaper then throw out at changes cons they move a lot and are pron to more leakage fleece ones, you buy one of the 3$ fleece blankets from Walmart and cut them into the size of an insert no sew needed! most people throw them out with poo but you could also spray it easier than regular inserts and reuse, you put them in the hamper every pee Change and reuse! cons, there are not many if anyone has some let me know pros, you save money, they dont slide as much so then the actually keep the poop in! all liners have the same basic usage they let pee flow through and the are supposed to hold pop on for easier disposal!

You may even get away with using them sooner! I was hesitant at first to use my pockets as they seemed so huge, but I probably could have used them by the end of week 4 or 5, or as soon as baby hits 8lbs ish. Baby’s proportions will play into it a bit, and you’ll have to adapt your inserts as you go so that you’re not wrestling with too much bulk. Pro-tip: get onesie snap in extenders when you hit 4-5 months - you won’t have to size up as quickly on onesies to accommodate for fluff butt :)

I use disposable bamboo liners, and it catches the poo and so far my baby is EBF and 4mo and it still catches it even if it's liquidy, no need for spray pal. I also do EC and liners help if there's a bit of a shart on liner but diaper is clean, I can just change the liner and reuse the diaper. I never used AIO but tried everything else and I put preflats and prefolds away, pockets are faster for EC imo. I do cloth for money and environment, you can find biodegradable diaper trash bags, and i use it to toss in the wipes and liners. I only use disposables when we go out so the smallest diaper package like 30pk is enough to last until next size.

Can you get away with not using the hip snap on your Alva’s? Otherwise, if it’s in your budget, look into some of the brands that are known to be made bigger to add to your stash. Also, depending on what you’re stuffing your pockets with, you could try switching out some of the thicker inserts or using less fluff and changing more often (this wouldn’t work at night though, clearly :). Less stuffing might free up some of the diaper itself making it less tight around baby girl’s thighs. Green Mountain Diapers hemp boosters are super thin and super absorbant - maybe you could replace one of your inserts with one of those. And lastly, I used to get nasty sock marks too until I started making sure I left enough “slack” to easily get one finger between the elastic and baby’s thigh. I was always afraid of poop leaks and was making the diapers too tight as a result. Turns out I didn’t need to :) Oh, and some red marks are inevitable. If they fade quickly (eg. 5 min into a bath and no marks), you’re fine! Good luck!
