How to check voltage on your computer using multimeter

Ғылым және технология

A short guide on how to check the 12v and 5v rails on a computer's power supply through a molex connector using a multi-meter.
I used my OCZ StealthXstream 600W power supply with Asus P6t Deluxe v2 motherboard.
Software like HWmonitor gave inaccurate readings. The BIOS hardware monitor showed better readings but its also not 100% accurate.

Thanks for the vid, showed me how to do everything perfectly. I'm also very glad i was able to get 12v and 5v on the molex connectors.

Cheers, I tested the little power brick out, only has one common earth at pin 2 or 3 not both, but the 1 and 4 are correctly wired as +5v (5.1v) and +12v (+12.2v). I didn't have anything to hand to put a load onto it and check amperage, but it's rated at 2A on each rail. Ah well, I got to look inside the old HDD (Maxtor 80GB). Single mirror-finish platter, magnets, lots of stuff. Couldn't be bothered with finding and changing the TVS diodes...they are freakin' tiny! That was easy. Thanks :)

Hey, thanks for the comment :). Yes you should be able to use a multimeter to check the voltages on any powersupply. Thats a shame about your harddrive :(. Your PSU should be okay especialy if its a good brand with good components, you can check if the voltages are stable and running at the proper voltage.

Hi, nice simple instructions, I can follow that. Would this technique also apply to testing a separate power supply? I recently bought an IDE/SATA to USB kit, and it had a molex terminated power supply, with a molex-SATA power adaptor. It worked fine but I, STUPIDLY, plugged in the molex upside down into an old IDE HDD - and killed it (won't power on any more, and dodgy smell). The PSU seems to power the DVD drive OK still, but I dunno if I damaged that little PSU. Cheers

2 Questions, how to do you test the 3.3v? And secondly I'm from England, where you set your current to dvc 20 volts, would mine be different?

I don't know if its dangerous or not but it does seem very high. Try run a heavy load application on your computer like running futuremark's 3dmark06 or a game and see if the voltage drops to a safer zone. What power supply are you using?

Thanks for the video! Unfortunately I don't have a molex connector on my PSU. Can I also do this with a 4-pin floppy drive power connector? Also, is it safe to connect the multimeter when the computer is still on and the PSU is connected to the motherboard?

Yes, you can user the 4-pin floppy drive connector. I am not a qualified engineer or anything but I believe you can connect the multimeter to the system, as long as you are careful and do not short circuit the system.

@gmrgrl09 its not a calculator its a multimeter. you can buy them from maplins.

Ok, so I won't short out the PSU by inserting the probes in that way - thank you :) This is what I wanted to know. I have already fried a laptop so I'm very careful now.

Sorry I don't know how to check the 3.3v rail :( I too live in the UK LOL. The current is the same. :)

Check this out >> /watch?v=bjyiriNOhyI But you need an extra SATA cable. You can disable your DVD if it uses SATA.
