How to Check the Thermal Fuse in Your Refrigerator/Freezer

If your refrigerator/freezer stops running and cooling and will only work after it is unplugged then plugged back in, replacing the thermal fuse (thermistor) may be the answer to your problem. Here's how to check the thermal fuse to see if it needs replacing. The problem particularly affects Samsung units with model numbers that start with RB followed by four numbers, for example, RB1955VQ or RB2155SH. This one is model RB1955VQ. I am not that familiar with appliance repair technology but after many years as an electronics tech, I can say for a fact that a thermal fuse and a thermistor are two entirely different items. A thermistor is just what the name implies. It is a resistor that changes value with temperature. It is easily tested with an ohmmeter. Take a reading. If holding it between your fingrrs makes it change one way and touching it to ice makes it go the other, it is probably good. Shorted or open and it is bad. I guess it is possible to be out of range but not likely. A thermal fuse is also self descriptive and often found in things like coffee pots It has zero resistance and blows when the temperature excedes the value marked on the fuse. The thermistor is a temperature control sensor and a therrmal fuse is a protective one in case something goes wrong. The device in the fridge is a thermistor. Part of the same circuit is a thermostat. This is a bimetal, temperature sensitive switch switch, mounted on the evaporator coil to connect and disconnect the defrost heater at the correct temperatures.
