    Hi, Daniel. I appreciate the video, but I have to say - your method of estimating the iPhone's battery health is incorrect. First of all, Apple's promise that the iPhone's battery will retain at least 80% of its design capacity after 500 cycles does NOT mean the iPhone's battery capacity will certainly reduce to 80% at that point. It simply gives you the worst-case scenario. Smartphones to date use lithium-ion batteries. A lithium-ion battery's health largely depends on how you use it. If you use it too aggressively (e.g., frequently discharge it to very low percentages and/or charge it to full and keep it full for a long time, fast-charge it often, etc.), it will degrade faster. If you use it "gently" (e.g., never let the battery percentage go too low, always use a slow charger to prevent elevating the battery's temperature much, use iPhone's "optimized charging" feature, etc.), even after 500 cycles, it could still be at 95% or higher. Second, the reason that your phone's battery is still showing 100% after 121 cycles simply means that it's still at or above its design capacity. How's that possible, you may ask? That is because lithium-ion batteries in smartphones, laptops, even electric vehicles typically have 2-5% extra capacity as a buffer, which is hidden to the users. Yes, your phone may have lost say, 3% of its initial capacity, but what is remaining could still be above the design capacity. That's why it says its battery health is still at 100%. Bigger iPhones, such as iPhone 13 Pro max and 14 Pro max, usually fare better than their smaller variants, because: (1) their larger batteries allow them to retain a higher percentage at the end of every day, and (2) they go through fewer charge cycles after the same amount of usage by the user, both of which are good for the battery health. I observed this first hand with my previous iPhones. I consider myself a very "gentle" battery user and never fast charge my phones. :) My iPhone 12 Pro's battery health was at 92% after a year because I usually ended the day at ~30%, but my iPhone 13 Pro Max was still at 100% health after 12 months because its battery almost never fell below 50% when I went to sleep at night. I hope this makes sense.

    Very helpful from this comment, hopefully everyone would be able to see this about this. But I’m curious to ask though, if you use the fast charger (like 20 watts) for your iPhone, would it degrade faster from your maximum capacity? Because I just got this new phone recently with a charger that is 20 watts. So I might be afraid that this maximum capacity of this phone would degrade faster. But thanks for the information about this though. Again it’s very helpful!

  • @doniel2008

    @doniel2008

    Жыл бұрын

    @@st4ffz775 The reason that you should minimize use of fast chargers on your iPhone is because of the large current being pumped into your phone's battery. The biggest enemy to a lithium-ion battery's health is high temperatures, which may degrade the chemicals inside. A high current input (when charging) or output (like when you're playing games) will increase the battery temperature because of the heat generated from the battery's internal resistance (Power=I^2*R). The higher the current, the quicker your battery will heat up. Lower temperatures (not too low, though) are always better for the battery. Phone manufacturers' claims that your phone can be fast-charged at 20, 30 watts etc only mean that your battery health will still stay above 80% after 500 cycles (i.e., as promised by the warranty). Inevitably, your battery health will still degrade faster than it would have with a slow charger like the old-school 5-watt charger that used to come with iPhones. That being said, given that nowadays replacing the iPhone's battery only costs ~10% of the phone's cost, it's up to you whether you think the benefits of fast charging is worth it. Personally, I would avoid using a fast charger unless it's absolutely necessary.

    As a shop. I calculate the cycle by 5% each year and normally 20% gone means your battery is ready for service so each 5% lost from 100% it means you lost 25 percent of your battery, 5% x4 = 20 take that out from 100 and you have 80% battery left and Apple will say Service in the settings/battery/battery max capacity. Which means each 5% is 125 cycles and 20% gone from battery, means 500 cycles are gone. I haven't seen your calculation in the description Daniel but I will go ahead and check now. This is how i calculated previously :).

    If you keep your phone in the load range of 20-80%, you will reduce the battery wear to a minimum, as long as you do not overheat your battery. You can overheat your battery by fast charging, other than MacSafe charging, where the phone and charger keeps an eye on battery temperature and stops charging, if your iPhone battery gets too hot, Forthermore, remove your phone from case for charging, don't leave it in the sun or in a hot car and stop gaming if the phone throttles and dims the screen. Charge your phone at a time of day, where your can keep an eye on the battery load, so you can stop charging at 80%. Then your battery will last much longer.

    cycles are an average value to represent approximate wear life and this depends on many things. Full and partial charge cycles, what charger and at what temperature. many variables. so the measurement from the capacity will be more accurate because the number of cycles alone does not determine the degradation of the battery value. it has no effect on it.

    Hi. I pumped into a wall on my iPhone, I can't create new home screens, no more! I have an XS running iOS 16. I used to create new home screens by simply holding a jiggling app icon and moving it to the right where a new page opens automatically in a hassle-free way. But this thing is no more applicable. I reached out to Apple support, and they suggested useless solutions such as hard-restarting the phone or updating the software (which is already up to date). So I decided to troubleshoot the problem myself since no one is helping! Hence, I went to settings and tried to reset the home screen settings only, but my bad :( I forgot to save screenshots of the old order of the apps! At the moment, I'm struggling with the no more home screens problem, and the stupid new order of my apps which is really frustrating 😮‍💨 Any idea please on how I can get back to my previous app icons' order? or the no new home screens thing?

    Fast charging doesn't degrade the battery as much as you think. A 10w charger from 0-100 will raise the temperature to 35-40c depending on the stage. While Xiaomi over here 240w charging gets the temperature to 45c , say you super charge it twice per day you will get the same heat production as the 10w charger since you charged the phone half of the time. Meaning it doesn't jump to 45c

    This only shows you have used 95.16% of the 500. You don't take into account the battery full charge capacity (FCC) You would need to know the design capacity and the current full charge capacity. Then it would be FCC / Design * 100 = Remaining capacity as a percentage of the design. My MacBook as an example is 7995 (FCC) / 8790 (Design Cap) * 100 = 90.95% after 37 Cycles. Whats also worth noting, is the drop in capacity will happen within the first 6-12 months and start level off slow down after this.

    Unfortunately cycles doesn’t tell you the whole story. Like if you leave your phone in sun/heat one day it drastically hits on battery health no matter the cycles. Getting 80% from 500 cycles is just a general guide. But that battery health isn’t lying though.

    I think there is a mistake, the value to look at is the next to the word, that is, 96, not 121. My phone is proof that after 5 years I have 960 cycles and it's at 82%, and not 300 as you indicated.

Because last year I bought iPhone 11 second the battery health was 100% but in 2 months from 100% comes down to 76% and after the first 2 months it didn’t drop for 8 months so the real battery health was 76% now I’m worried about this brand new iPhone XS Max I got today but warranty expired it says purchased on 2021

    Hi! It is interesting going into the data log of the phone, but please note this is not valid! What you see there is how many times the phone has been charged, however some charging sessions do not count as a full charging cycle on your battery! What I mean by this is that, for example, you charge your phone from 20 to 80%, it will have a lesser effect compared to if you charged it from 10 to 90%, however, the cycle count you show in the data file still increases. This is why this iPhone's battery is at 100% still, because all those 121 charges do not add up to 121 full cycles, which indeed would make your health go to around 95%. Also, do note, many users, me included, report that going from 100% to 99% battery health takes a lot longer than any other dip in percentage. This is because batteries when they are new may have a slightly bigger capacity than that 100% shown in the health tab.

    As someone who did his thesis in battery estimation and worked with satellites before (where keeping a high battery health is worth billions), I would add a few caveats to your "rule". 1. You can charge up to 95 or 97% with minimum degradation 2. Battery health is a function of the battery discharge 3. Aim to charge the battery just before you need it, i.e. charge in the morning just before going out rather than before bed A cycle from 80-20% gives a 60% discharge while a cycle from 95-50% gives a 45% discharge rate. Consequently, the 95-50% cycle is better for your battery if you charge it in the morning
