Great video Ironhorse. Been watching your videos for over a year and reading books etc. No stranger to 2 strokes but I never took the plunge with porting. I can see a major addiction happening soon. Do you have a video where you talk about the history of when you first got into porting or what books you read? Did you use the degree wheel right from the get go or did that come later? This is super fun stuff thanks for the videos!

Awesome video dude, I finally understand blowdown and degree wheels :) I just spoke to you on another vid about my 390xp. It revs well with the mild porting I did, but I’d like more torque. What would an ideal number be? I only widened the exhaust a little and the intake a little, I didn’t touch the floor or roof. I did case match the cylinder to the case using the gasket as a guide.

Ok! Here it is! Remove yer base gasket and then check yer squish 20 thousands or a little more is what u would expect! Go to a motorcycle dealer and buy a tube of bike assembly sikicone! A very thin layer is all you need! Use this for final assessmbly! Set yer blowdown to 98 degrees 96 will be ok! You will gain a little compression and with no base gasket yer intake becomes more favorable! ( The timing)! Make sure anywhere you ground into cylinder you Sand/ grind theburr off! If you don't it takes the piston out! Good luck! If you need help feel free to ask! Let me know how you make out!

Ironhorse Chainsaw thanks buddy. I’ll take it apart again, make a degree wheel and work out how to attach it and then see where 96 is. Can I put a ring in the cylinder and wind it up to 98 and then mark the bottom with a pen (I think I saw someone do that)? I’ve just see your answers on the other video so thanks for that too, you’re a good man 👍

@@theironhorse6600 Iv got a MS361 I’m working on. With base gasket deleted squish is .020…. So I want to go that way. Exhaust is 103 degrees. Intake duration is 146 degrees but planning on lowering the floor to get 152 degrees. My only issue is Blowdown. Transfers open at 135 degrees ATDC… making blowdown 32. I’m thinking 32 is a bit much. Thinking 26 would be better. Should I raise my uppers and if so how much would you recommend? Thanks.

I love watching your videos. I'm getting ready to finish porting a 365 SP and a 372 XP. I'm trying to get my brain wrapped around this timing stuff. At around 4'33" you saw first ray of light in the exhaust opening and said it was 92* blow down. Do you mean blow down begins at 92*? Also you wanted 103* so you needed to remove .011", 103*-92*=11*. Does this mean 1* equals 1 thousandth??? I ask because in your other videos if I remember correctly you subtract the exhaust opening from the transfer opening to get blowdown. Also from TDC to BDC is 180* and the stroke is 36mm so 180*/36mm=5* or 1mm=5* and 1mm=0.0395 in.=5* so 1*=0.0079 in.x11*=.0869 in. is how much you need to remove to get the exhaust to open at 103* rather than 92*. I have opened the lower tranfers and I have case matched the cylinder and case. I would like to port the Intake and exhaust but I would like to feel more confident about what I'm doing. I do not want to insult you. Can you explain this so I can understand it better? Am I looking at it the wrong way. Please be brutel! I'm 72yo and my brain cells are hard as brick and its hard to get anything in them and especially out of them. Any help is appreciated. Ron

interesting use of a degree wheel , never had anything to do with upgrading 2 strokes, do they run cleaner with porting, i assume they do to be making more power resulting from better combustion of the fuel., i see the new stihls comming out may have a fuel to oil ratio of 100 to 1, some how the crank will have its own lubrication , Well thats what i think they were saying.

Hello friend! A degree wheel makes it an exact science! And they do burn cleaner because they are more efficient! Let's see how that 100 to one works out!

Hello Mr Iron Horse, how are you? I’ve made a degree wheel now for my 390xp, could you let me know what number I should aim for please? You had mentioned it once before but I can’t find it. Thanks for your time buddy 👍

The blowdown? Set it at 98 degrees! Check it 3 times! Then you know yer wheel hasn't slipped! Take 30 thousands off the floor of yer intake!into the cylinder! Yer making yer intake duration longer! Do a base gasket delete if you can! If you do only remove 15 thousands from yer intake floor! Open up the transfers like I did in the 371 video! You do these things you will have a real powerhouse! If you need more help call 607 698 2738!

Nice one buddy! From what I can work out my blowdown is at 105, does that sound like it could be right? I did put a thin base gasket on it before so that may have changed it from standard.

I was wrong dude, I now think it’s at 96, is that bad because it’s less than 98?

  • @theironhorse6600

96 would be ok! I think yer degree wheel is moving ! It must duplicate 3 times before you go further! 105 sounds normal with athin gasket!

I thought there was something strange going on so I’ve just set the wheel with a piston stop so I’m now sure I’ve got that right, and it’s now reading 98 and has done a few times. When I last had a go at porting it mildly I just widened it a little and cleaned it up, so I suppose I must have raised it in the clean up! Bit of a fluke it landed on 98! Got to hit the sack now but tomorrow I’ll check what the intake and squish are and let you know. I didn’t touch the transfers so when I take the cylinder off I’ll take pics of everything and send them to you. If it’s the middle of the day there I hope you’re having a good one and thanks for all your advice 👍
