I wrote the prompt the first time it told me invalid query strangely enough I typed it the second time it actually gave me the serial number thanks so much

Thank you! It was a quick fix (after trying HP support which was not helpful, nor was another KZread fix). The key with what you showed was that I needed to choose Command Prompt (Admin) not just Command Prompt. I have an HP Stream (13) which is different from my newer Pavilion notebook and on that one the fn+esc does work too.

PS I am NO computer geek at all so this is a learning experience. I had to right-click on the Windows icon and the choices came up. I started on Macs years ago but still forget about right-click sometimes! Hope that helps someone.
