    It's also important that you make sure you hold perfectly vertical that piece of wood where you do the marks. If tilted, it can give you a bad reading. :)

    One could also rock it forward and backward and look for the lowest point. rocking it forward and backward would make the laser move up the wood piece.

    Your video is really helpful. In this video you have a max/min deviation of only 1/4th inch, did you still lay self leveling compound for this project? I am trying to understand how much deviation is ok to grind and patch, and how much to lay a complete self level compound. Thank you in advance.

  • @MrYoucandoityourself

    @MrYoucandoityourself

    1/8" on 8ft area is normal deviation. You just need to find small bumps and grind them. If deviation is bigger, you should use concrete floor leveling compound. Sometimes there are slopes of the floor. This problem you should solve with your customer and ask his decision because it costs more money.

    Just got one, and can't stress this enough... don't close up your sub floor renovation area until you've shot a laser level across all sub floor support beams. This will allow you to know what beams need shims, and then you don't have these level quick areas that are obviously covering up the real issue, that the vertical beam supports need to be leveled FIRST! I made this mistake years ago, and just this past week (56 year old house) now understand what structural members need adjustment before even thinking about level quick.

    You can put the laser tripod in ANY place. Than you should looking for the highest spot using piece of board (or stick) and compare almost each sq.ft. Why highest spot? Because you should add some concrete floor leveling compound.

    I am using pencil. Not a big mistake, if pencil not straight, and very fast to check. Another idea 4D laser level. Bottom laser show you all imperfections 5/16” . I have video how it’s work. Just put laser any please and bottom lane make green all high spots. Move to that green market spot laser and you will see another marked green spots. Move laser to that free place. When you don’t have more green market places- this is the high spot . Easy find in one miner, just move the laser. I sell it with tripods and separate on my site, Just$299Cad.

    I suggest using a 1x2 board with a ruler or yardstick taped to it to take your readings with. It would then not be necessary to write on the board. Once you determine your base elevation by taking some random shots, it would be very easy to determine how much higher or lower a particular spot is by directly reading the difference on the ruler. Also, when you take each reading, you should slowly move the top of your board in and out, watching your laser line reading while doing so, and you can tell the board is plumb when your reading is at the lowest point. I used this method in a room after I snapped grid lines on the floor spaced every foot. I recorded the shots and could instantly see where the high spots and the low spots were.

    I have been working as a floor installer for more than 10 years. I met the ideal concrete floor only three times for this period. Why am I looking for low and high spots? Good question! If I apply self leveling floor compound to all concrete floor I'll spend lots of material, time and customer's money. Unfortunately customers are not always ready to pay $3.00 per sq.ft (usually till $1.00). That's why I am looking for low spots and patch them. And I am grinding if I find high spots. Hope it helps.

    Semantics matter when doing flooring and many people are confused when the term "levelling" is used because that's really NOT what's important, FLATNESS is important. You can have a floor that slopes (not level) say 1, or even 1 1/2 inches from one side of the room to the other over say 16 ft. but that matters not because as long as the span is FLAT then the "out of level condition" won't be seen by eye. Bedrooms and even living rooms and family room oftentimes have this condition. Stop referring to flooring preparation as "levelling". Most concrete slabs are not "level", but they are FLAT.

    Whether this video is good or bad depends on its intent. If it is intended to let an owner recognize what their contractor is doing, then it's great. However, if you're a doityourselfer and you think you've just learned how to identify levelness of a floor well enough to do something about it, you'd be very disappointed. Here's some very basic info that's missing: 1. Where you should be trying to place your laser (answer: the highest point on the floor, so that you are mostly patching low spots, instead of grinding high spots - grinding creates a mess that requires a different level of protection and it creates silica dust which is now shown to be extremely dangerous). 2. How often do you take measurements? (every 3' in all directions, or as it's said in the trade, "on 3 foot centers" ) 3. Is dimensional lumber (a piece of wood that can be warped or cut unevenly at the ends) the best tool to use to measure tiny variations? (NO - use a straight edge that preferably has gradations, or better yet use a laser level pole, which is the actual tool made to this.) 4. How do you hold the pole (perfectly vertical, which is tough to do with a piece of wood - remember you're trying to measure height differences down to 1/8" - are you good enough to eyeball that with an average piece of lumber?) Here's the thing - there are dozens of tiny details that can be addressed in a video, but would take 3 pages of comments to cover. In anticipation of the "where's your video" comment, I don't do them. When I was in the floor leveling business I presented this exact topic to professionals at the 2 largest industry trade shows The Covering Show and Surfaces. I also taught seminars at architects and worked with contractors on leveling projects that spanned from World Trade in NY to high-rise condos in Seattle.
