How to check Capacitors using Multimeter
This video provides an easy and simple method to check capacitors by using digital multimeter (or analog one). Except finding their values exactly, this guides you to check the condition of a capacitor whether it is good or faulty due to open circuit or leak.

@hobbyelectroniccircuits7391

You have to remove at least one pin before checking, otherwise the resistances around that capacitor will add and readings will be wrong. Not only for capacitors, you have to remove the components like resistors/transistors/diodes before checking. But sometimes if you understand the component under test is not affected by other components in the circuit board, you can check it without removing.

You are welcome friend. It is a method to test capacitors simply by any cheap multimeter that are not facilitated with capacitor testing feature.
That's informative, but some capacitors with same value showing fast reading and others showing slow reading until open circuit, why is that?
@hobbyelectroniccircuits7391
2 ай бұрын
Thank you. It is due to a difference in capacitance of those capacitors, even if the same value has printed. You can verify their capacitance using a multimeter that capable of measuring capacitor values. One reasons for this difference is the tolerance, say a capacitor with 10uF with a tolerance of +/-10%, then it can be 9uF or 11uF. Also its capacitance may decrease over the time according to the quality of the manufacturer.

If the capacitor testing feature is not available in the multimeter, it can be simply check the capacitors by using ohms range where the capability of the capacitor to charge when current flows through its leads is checked. If it uses high resistance range to check large uF capacitors, the time taken to reach open circuit will high.

Hi, can you use a regular multimeter to test if the capacitor is is installed on a circuit board? (in circuit test?) Tks
@hobbyelectroniccircuits7391
2 жыл бұрын
You cannot test a capacitor (or any component) that installed in a circuit board, because resistance from other components will add to the component that going to test. Remove one or two pins before testing.
Long shot on having this answered but what if the capacitor value is 64000
@hobbyelectroniccircuits7391
10 ай бұрын
Use 2000 ohms or less range.
Very easy to understand but the meter view is a bit dark. So finally open circuit mean what? Do the meter drop dead to zero or goes right to the end.?
@hobbyelectroniccircuits7391
2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. For a good capacitor, initially the reading is zero resistance and gradually increasing towards infinite resistance. (open circuit) If the reading just shows infinite resistance, the capacitor is open circuited. If the reading just shows zero resistance or some considerable ohms value, the capacitor is short circuited or leaked.
I'm just here for the music.
