In this video I demonstrate the sleight of hand technique known as the center deal or middle deal. I also talk about it’s uses (or lack thereof) in card cheating and card magic.
NOTE:
This is NOT meant to be an instructional video on how to cheat at cards or on how to protect yourself from cheating. Don't watch this video and then try this stuff in a game or think you can’t be cheated. I make these videos for entertainment so that people can more deeply appreciate the craft and the art of sleight-of-hand. If you find this stuff interesting, go check out the work of people like Steve Forte, Jason England, Richard Turner, Darwin Ortiz, and Jason Ladanye. If you want to learn how to protect yourself at the card table, check out “Casino Game Protection,” “Poker Protection,” and “Gambling Protection Series” by Steve Forte and “Gambling Scams” by Darwin Ortiz.
ADDITIONAL INFO:
There's some fascinating history behind the center deal that I didn't go into in this video. I will probably cover that in a future video series. The maneuvers that nullify the cut are known as "shifts" and "hops." I didn't have time to go into any detail in this video. Marked cards are far more complex as a subject than I allude to, but there just wasn't time.
CREDITS:
I learned the center deal from Jason England’s DVD Foundations Volume 1. I have made some slight modifications for my hands, but the technique is more or less the same as what he teaches. I also learned the bottom deal and second deal from his videos (and from The Expert at the Card Table by S.W. Erdnase. If this stuff interests you, check out “Gambling Sleight of Hand” Volumes 1 and 2 by Steve Forte - they’re incredible. The double duke is inspired by Guy Hollingsworth’s “A Gambling Routine” published in “Drawing Room Deceptions,” Darwin Ortiz’s “The Ultimate Cardshark” published in “Darwin Ortiz at the Card Table,” and Andrew Wimhurst’s routines “The Wimhurst Poker Deal” and “The Return of the Ultimate Cardshark” published in “Down Under Deals.” The control to the bottom used is Ernest Earick's one-handed convincing control published in "By Forces Unseen." The explanations about the rationale behind the center deal, why it’s fascinating, why it’s useless, etc. is inspired by the work of Dai Vernon, Ricky Jay, Richard Turner, and Darwin Ortiz. Special thanks to my friend Mr. Z for additional guidance and information.
Special thanks to Darwin Ortiz and Ed Kwon for some background theory and constant inspiration.

@@DanielRoyMagic I have found that the best explanation of the center deal is in the Ross Bertrum book, Magic and Methods of Ross Bertrum. Dai Vernon posed for the photographs in this book. Again, "The Classics" And magicians saying something is useless is an old doge, to keep other magicians from Doing the move. T. Nelson Downs, and Louis Zegoni (see expert Card Technique, I think I spelled his last name wrong) (who I saw old movie footage of doing the center deal on a glass top table) Thanks to Jay Marshall, with Jack Pyle Chicago's Punch deck pro. They all considered the center deal one of the most useful of the dirty deals when used for magic.

There are several times you move the deck where I can't tell how you're repositioning and not losing it. You're explanations are spot on as well. Would be awesome if when you are showing tricks you could have 1 camera angle that is off in the corner that never cuts, as anytime someone watches a magic breakdown and then see's a cut it is like "okay well maybe they can do what they're saying but also they could have just cut and arranged the cards and then continued". Just food for thought! I can see you're doing a lot of what you say though, just would be that cherry on top!

What interests me most about card magic is how many manipulations you can do with them and the therapy it provides me. Watching your level of expertise is so encouraging! What would be your book/intro of choice in one interested in card magic artistry?

At the last demonstration, it actually has a different sound when you deal from the center. I don't know if it's even possible to avoid that(?) Nonetheless, you have an impressive sleight of hand.

I learned it from Jason England's Foundations Volume 1 and from Steve Forte's Gambling Protection Series. Mostly, it was a lot of experimentation and practice, because you have to adapt the technique to your own hands.

During the first deal with 4 kings face up (ends at about 0:45) 3/4 center deals you could distinctively hear a difference in the sound of the card being placed on the table. You may not be able to see sleight of hand but keep your ears open lol, maybe the rest won’t be the same though, I’ve only seen 45 seconds haha Edit: 1:19 I knew all 4 kings were in the far most left players hand off of sound alone. Practice on the center deals for sure(maybe the force of placing it down? Or pressure of grabbing it? I’ve never done any tricks to be honest I don’t know, but I know that’s no easy task but I’d suggest maybe practicing center deals with a decibel meter next to you (establish the baseline for a regular deal first) and improve on making the center deal sound the same Edit 2: So when he was dealing out that 2nd hand I did hear a few suspicious deals on the player to the right of the leftmost and for his (Daniel) hand. But the 4 Kings on the left were loudest , so I just thought yep 4 kings right there. So I didn’t necessarily suspect the aces he revealed at 1:27 BUT I wasn’t surprised either, I was like oh that’s why I had false positives when listening for the Kings. What do you guys think, can you accurately guess yourself by ear and sound? Let me know if you read my comment before watching the video, cheers Edit 3: 2:40, well I guess there really is no reason to practice making it sound better except for challenge 😂 Edit 4: 3:33 AIGHT THAT ONE I HEARD AND SEEN BRO! No hate but I swear hahaha Edit 5: 4:44 didn’t hear or see at first but after watching a 2nd time you can hear that the 2nd deals have little to no noise and the normal deals have a loud noise(the aces) this follows the same pattern as the other cheat with center deal, of the cheated cards given out having a loud noise. So when at a poker table, if you hear a deal that is distinctively louder than others, it’s highly suspect of him cheating a card(center deal or 2nd deal so far shown). Especially if one hand has multiple occurrences of a loud deal. Now he could throw you off by purposefully making his regular deals louder, and 2nd deals louder, or by of course making the center deals quieter and just doing the regular deal gently with less pressure or whatever when he’s doing 2nd deals. Edit 6: Well that was the end of the video pretty much, I didn’t see you swap the center deal to bottom, but bottom deals are really noticeable like you said. Again no hate bro, I know Jack shit about sleight of hand, I’m just letting you know what I observed, and I can tell you are really passionate about cards and if no one told you what I said above ^^^ I thought it’d be something you want to read. Like what people see and how to make it better. (Give you something new to practice if you didn’t practice it already maybe haha) And other people might take a listen see for themselves idk. Anyways whoever is reading have a good day 👍🏼 EDIT 7: Found some people in the comments who noticed the same thing, and someone replied in an actual casino or card game thered likely be enough background noise for you not to be able to hear the difference between hands dealt. (like fans and AC ambient noise, people talking, maybe other tables dealing hands etc.) And that’s a fair argument. Some other people said it might not even be possible to make it quieter (could be I don’t know much about cards) but you’ve definitely got it nailed down very good bro. There’s probably more of a chance of them not hearing it in a live setting than hearing it. The odds are still there theyd hear it though, but if this were a poker table and I was betting on it, in a live setting at the casino yeah they probably wont hear shit. On the video though yeah

It's mostly Jason England's technique, which is taught in Foundations Vol. 1. It's done from a break, so there's no "get ready" required (aside from getting the break). Nice username by the way... :)

@@Alpysf There are a number of good techniques out there. Jason England's version just fit my hands really well. I also know him personally and he's been extremely helpful to me in learning the move, which was very generous of him. Keep in mind that false deals depend so much on the texture/structure of your hands that you will have to adapt any given technique to fit your own hands.
