    I use a Hybrid Charger. RadioLink CB 86 Plus. Normal chargers charge through the main power port and balance though the balance port. (Drain) When cells reach maximum charge voltage the Charger still has to charge them all in series. At some stage it gives up doing the balance charge to prevent damage by overcharging the cells that are already full as kit cant drain the fully charged cell within its discharge wattage specification. (It Overheats). The RadioLink charger I mentioned. charges through the balance leads. It stops charging each individual cell as it reaches full charge. If one cell is low it continues to charge that cell on its own. Your battery has 2 damaged cells. Those cells went into chemical breakdown when it sat and leaked charge. HobbyKing ship those batterie at 17% charge to achieve airline guidelines. You may be able to recover those 2 cells but very unlikely. You should throw it away, it m ay cost you a model. I have a procedure where I storage charge / drain new batteries. (Some from China are actually nearly fully charged on delivery) Put them in an Excel Spreadsheet with a storage charge date. I then check the Excel SS every 6 months and reset and storage charge when necessary. Good luck with your battery. That would have been an expensive one.

    @@RCINFORMER Yes they will, You need to confirm that they will discharge at an even rate. I use a EDF test stand to stress test batteries. I have 4, 6 ,8, 10, 12S elf Fans for this test. If there is any damage in the cell it will not retain the Watt hours and will drop voltage faster than the others. Do you remember what the voltage was when you first charged? If it was 3V and above they should be OK, if it was below 3V they would her suffered some damage. Hard to estimate how much. Without the test above.

    If you're going to discharge and recharge the pack after you do this little trick, why not just skip the added risk and hook the battery up to your charger the normal way, set it for storage mode (this will bring all the cells to ~3.85 volts), and then do a balance charge to 4.2 volts? If you have a battery with a cell that won't stay within 0.1 volts of the other cells, it's time to check the internal resistance. And if that test fails, soak it in saltwater for a week or two and throw it away..

  • @RCINFORMER

    There is really no risk if it is done properly. As i indicated, i charged and discharged it several times with no luck bring up 3 of the cells in balance charge. I was able to individually bring up all three to the others.

    @@RCINFORMER Key words - "If done properly". I've seen too many guys that don't know how to use their Lipo charger the right way. I know your method will work, but some guys are going to let the smoke out trying it. Personally, I would only use your method on a cell that was so low that the charger is refusing to charge it.

  • @RCINFORMER

    @RCINFORMER

    @@txkflier That's just it... after several attempts to balance charge & discharge... this was the only thing that got them up to full charge. Now that those cells have come up, I will cycle them a few times to see if they charge, discharge & stay balanced before putting it in a model...

  • @txkflier

    @txkflier

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@RCINFORMER I'm sure you know this, but many don't. Some chargers default to the non-balance charge mode because it's faster than the balance mode. In the non-balance mode, the charger shuts off when the cell with the highest voltage reaches 4.2 volts. It doesn't care what the voltages of the rest of the cells are as long as they're within the voltage limits. In the balance mode, it will continue to charge the rest of the cells until they all reach 4.2 volts (or whatever the full charge voltage is set to). If you don't switch to balance mode occasionally, your cell voltages will most likely drift further apart over time. Since I fly mostly EDF's and have a 1200 watt charger, I always charge in balance mode so that I'm less likely to push a cell below 3.3 volts at the end of a flight..

    Thats a good point, and why you should always check new Lipo’s upon Receipt with a cell checker and before doing anything else see what state of charge it is-then if there is any issue you have that option to contact the retailer immediately and see if you can get a replacement or refund-once you start charging/discharging/balancing you risk the retailer refusing to cover your lipo under warranty. Remember any imbalance greater than 0.5v is of concern and the lipo should be treated with extreme care (according to most manufacturers)🙂
