How to charge a power bank the proper way
Ғылым және технология
In this video, I'm going over what you should know in order to charge your power bank correctly. First I'm discussing the different charging ports that you might encounter: micro USB or USB type C.
Then I explain what to look for when using a wall charger in order to charge your power bank. I also touch upon other charging sources such as a laptop USB port or another portable charger

I got my first ever power bank secondhand at an estate sale and I really needed this information. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this video. Helped me out and learned how this equipment worked.
Thank you for the easy instructions on this. Wish I had seen this before I bought my power bank because now I want the one in the middle that you have with the C type cord and easy display to read. My instruction booklet doesn't even tell me there is an "output" and "input" slot, and the only charging I've ever done is with just the wall adaptor for my phone. We get a lot of power outages, so I really need a power bank for emergencies.
Yes! Thank you. This explained exactly what I needed to know
Very thorough explanation. Thank you very much.

I love power banks! I have several! I have the older micro input types as well as a few "C" type inputs, but one that does micro and lightning as well! I'm crazy about flashlights too, so all my banks have to have a flashlight in them.
Thanks ,I just one for my son with the C and micro ,but with your video I found a way to charge it faster,The screen can show that .Thank you

thank you for demonstrating this,
Just out of curiosity I did a test on charging speeds: In one test I charged a battery pack from another battery pack using the USB-C port connections. Battery Pack (A) charged Battery Pack (B) at a rate of approx 1% every 3 minutes which was not any slower than charging the same Battery Pack from a Wall Outlet. The Wall Outlet has USB inputs built-in but I'm not sure if they're USB 3.0 or 2.0. I suspect they are 2.0. That might be the difference.
Thank you so much!
Really helpful
Thanks man!

Can I charge powerbank using type c, bc if I compare using type C much quicker tho. Will it drain powerbank battery fast once connect charging to the phone?🤔😔

Thank you for the nice video. What is your thought about a phone should be charged with the mfg recommended voltage but no one talks about input voltage when charging a power pak. Secondly, when describing a power pak by watts one does not know the voltage. Therefore, one would not know the output voltage which might be too much for a particular phone. Thank you for everything

Power banks have built-in converters and can output different voltage values. But for calculating the Wh capacity, you should use 3.7 V as a reference. Check out this article for more info: www.powerbankexpert.com/how-to-convert-mah-to-wh-calculator/

My powerbank is the old style USB (Jackery, 12000mAh/44.4Wh). There are 3 light bars that show how much charge is available. Recently I can get it to charge up to one bar but it doesn't fully charge. I usually use the cord it came with but I did try a different one to test it, but it's the same.Is there a lifetime (whether number or uses or age) to power banks? I thought I'd ask before buying another one.
@PowerBankExpert

Yes, power banks, just like other batteries have a limited lifetime. For more info check out this article: www.powerbankexpert.com/how-long-does-a-portable-charger-last/. But your issue might or might not be related to the battery lifetime. There might be other causes for it. It would be a good idea to take it to a local electronics repair shop to check it out before buying a new unit.

This is my first time buying a powerbank and i noticed that they don't come with a charger, they only come with type c charging cable so as you said we should use a fast charger to charge. If we lose the type c cable it comes with can we use any usb/type c cord from the powerbank to our phone? Or do we have to use the cable provided only? So sorry for the dumb question. 😢

No dumb questions here. You can use any type C cable with your power bank. But please be aware that not all cables are the same, so charging speed might vary.

I'm not that familiar with that product, however, a blinking green light is generally a sign that the power bank is charging. Maybe you're using a slow charger and thus it takes a lot of time to see progress? Have you tried changing the charging cable and/or the wall charger? Also, please check out the user manual. In there it's generally detailed what the charging process should look like.

So if I go camping and I plug a power bank into my car cigarette lighter with USB c power bank that can be used as an input port or an output port, am I charging my power bank using my car battery, or am I charging my car battery using my power bank?
@PowerBankExpert

In that case, the power bank will be charged. The car charger port works only in one direction...you cannot use it to charge your car's battery. However, if you charge your power bank while the engine is running, the car battery will not get depleted...only if the engine is off.

My Li-polymer 18000mAH 5v power bank should be equally chargeable from its built-in solar panel or USB. It charges OK from USB, but sunshine causes it to discharge instead of charge. Blue LEDs correctly indicate presence of sunshine on its solar panel, but this sunshine causes battery to go down instead of up. I can only suspect internal wiring between solar and battery must have reversed polarity somewhere. I seek guidance on how to correct this
@PowerBankExpert
2 жыл бұрын
Usually, power banks with built-in solar panels are very inefficient. Especially the ones with a single solar panel (some have 3-4 foldable panels and are slightly better). If it works as planned, the single solar panel can fully charge the power bank in about 20 days or so if left under direct sunlight. However, if the solar panel is of lower quality than expected, or if the power bank is not put under direct sunlight, then I could expect to see effects like the ones you mentioned. So I'm not so sure if you can do anything to fix your power bank, unfortunately.
@sleepyjohn8324
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply, but no, although mine's only a single panel, I don't think my problem's anything to do with the strength of solar energy it receives; it's the polarity of the connection between its solar source and the battery. Whenever it shows solar energy being received, it starts to flatten the battery instead of charging it, If I knew how to identify the internal connection between the solar part and the battery part, and I could simply reverse it, then I believe I could start to get some benefit from its solar generation. I can only guess this reversed polarity symptom is due to an error in its original assembly.

@@sleepyjohn8324 If it's like you say, then maybe you can still return the power bank to the store you bought it from. These types of defects are usually covered by the warranty.

@@PowerBankExpert No, I must have had it 5 or 6 years now, so sadly long-since out of warranty. Apart from that, it would have been hard to convincingly explain my symptoms to an on-line supplier in a foreign country with limited English language ability. So that's why I thought I'd try posting on this specialist site here to see if anyone has any idea about how these solar batteries are connected up internally. Hate throwing anything in the bin!!
@PowerBankExpert
Жыл бұрын
@@sleepyjohn8324 if you had it for 5-6 years already and the problem started just now, then it's not likely for the wiring to be wrong. Most likely the issue is with something else...maybe the circuitry. However, since you're saying that the USB charging goes just fine, then I don't see why you can't use it for longer as a regular power bank. Solar charging would be quite inefficient if it worked anyway. USB is the best way to charge your power bank with. Also, if at any time you decide to throw it away, please make sure to do so in a place that specifically collects batteries. Disposing of it in the general trash bin is very harmful to the environment.

Hi. I bought a 20000 mAh power bank produced by ExtraStar (if I understood correctly a Spanish-Chinese enterprise) (I cannot find any info on YT, nor on the internet in general). It has two USB output ports: 5V/1.0A and 5V/2.0A. It charges through a micro, input 5V/2.0A. When charging the display shows the percentage reached. I read somewhere that charging up to 85% instead of 100% prolongs battery life. What do you think? Thank you.
@PowerBankExpert
Жыл бұрын
It's ok to charge it up to 100%, it won't do that much damage to the battery life. What's more important is not to let it drain out to 0% all the time. As much as you can, try to charge it up once it hits between 10% and 20%. It can go to 0% too but try not to make a habit out of it.
