Recommend that you remove the fill hole bolt before draining the differential. Don't drain it if you can't refill it.

Good point. I was replacing the whole cover so it didnt apply in this application, but for sure if you are going to reuse the cover make sure you can remove the drain plug out before you remove the cover.

You bet!

Mechanics trick: get a one foot section of 3/8” fuel line and stick it on the nipple of the gear oil bottle. Use the hose like a flexible fill tube. You can hold the gear oil bottle above the rear end and squeeze until oil pours out of the fill hole. Voilá....no mess!

So I recently swapped my engine out of my 1980 chevy k5 blazer (with 5.0 now instead of 5.7L like previous engine) had no choice as I got good deal on 84 3/4 chevy for engine/parts), including diving deep into the dang turbo 350 to change out bad clutch plates(whatever they are called)lol -had more help with the tranny then engine, as I have to still learn more about rebuilding transmissions first.(used to have my dad helping/teaching me but guess things change)but I grew up working on freaking cars as a form of punishment instead of grounded to room, but guess it paid off..lol ANYWAY.. I have been still trying to work out kinks with engine, tranny and of course the exhaust, due to my boyfriend breaking studs and cracking the beveled out part of the pipe that is between the heat riser and manifold.(hope I have terminology right) So I decided to get on line for help and came across your videos and I just wanna say, keep them coming cause they are gonna help me big, especially with my vacuum lines and 4bb carb. I haven't checked completely but if not, will you put out video on electrical wiring crap from distributor area, starter area, and to the firewall through to driver side paneling? Anyway sorry for the book but kust thought I would say, YOUR SURE HELPING THIS LADY OUT

Oh yes I like learning to fix my own rigs and anything around the house, as I was a single mom and couldn't just throw money out. Now that my daughter is older and married, I have more time to learn which is why I did the engine swap and tranny work on my Blazer. I also have a 2005 XC90 Volvo I need to learn to work on...damn swedes may make a car that runs forever, but sure is looking hard to learn, but I will get it soon!!

What do you know about Gasket maker and the parts that are ok to use it on? I'm tired of gaskets being so touchy with being tightened in to much so it ends of leaking or to loose and still leaking, especially when it comes to a 4 x 4 and the hard movements that can shake your trucks parts and screws/bolts, etc? I am also having issues with getting my exhaust back up and tightened to the manifold since swapping engines. ANY SUGGESTIONS OR HELP IS VERY APPRECIATED!!

looks like I' m now going to change my fluid and think some clinking noise started under my torque cover so have to see if poss flywheel issues...ugghhhhh

Hey is there more than one fill hole on these? Like one higher than this on these models? I’m actually working with an 86 el Camino 4.3L. My rear gear looks exactly like yours so i figured I’d ask.

No. I didnt replace with a gasket so I used gasket maker. If you have a purchased already made gasket you wont need gasket maker.

What if it's a 14 bolt gmc k25 same procedure but different torque specs?

I agree. He didn't even need to change it. Ive seen the fluid come out literally silver. It probably had 100,000 miles on it and 20 years. I can still remember the smell to this day. It was like liquid silver, old work van.. from the metal particles

I replaced it because the gasket was toast and it wouldn't stop leaking. It had been sitting so long in storage...You guys are right though, the fluid was basically new from when it was replaced 12 years ago.

Wow 12 years. Fluids do lose their protective qualities and oils break down over a decade so its better done, and not leaking obviously.

@@Partnerthedog Amén, because brake fluid is “hygroscopic” meaning it tends to absorb moisture/water from the air. Most people don’t know that and never replace it then wonder why they have a spongy pedal. 🤦🏿‍♂️

It depends on the vehicle. If you ask them at any autoparts store they will get you hooked up with what you need. Then its just choosing a brand you want.

Same for 86 c10?

Should be fairly close.

I would wait overnight for the sealant to dry completely before adding the oil

👋 1977 toyota truck CHINOOK. CLASSIC RV Want to change or fill if low differential & transmission. NO PROBLEMS DO NOT WANT ANY EITHER TO EXPENSIVE DO BEST FOR IT SO OLD LASTED ALL THESE YEARS! I just want to check or change if necessary. U make it look easy.......most OPINIONS say DO NOT because old slug could go somewhere else end up with problems. HOPE 🌈⭐ U can respond to my 💋😘

You absolutely can if you want to. I didnt on the chrome cover because they notoriously leak. Using just the gasket maker has provided great outcomes vs. just a gasket in this application.

Crapola!!!!! Good luck getting the filler plug out ever again with the thread dope on it!!!

@@MechanicLife lol....I've had a few that were just welded in.....but it also could been the guy before me. True story, I worked in a forklift repair shop and I remember one guy there would dope the threads......prolly with red loctite and he would crank those plugs in with a j-bar!!!! I had the pleasure of taking one of them.out one day....I had to weld the sucker out!! But I do know that pipe dope is pretty powerful......especially compared to tape. Itll never leak though!!

That stuffs basically just liquid teflon, not pipe dope, not saying it needs it, but its not going to lock it up like pipe dope
