How To Change Your Diff & Transfer Case Fluid | 2019+ Ford Ranger

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

It's maintenance day on the Ranger, the truck has a little over 25k miles on abuse on it and I wanted to refresh the front and rear differentials along with the transfer case. Didn't see any videos online so I figure I would make this to help people out on this often neglected maintenance. Hope you guys enjoy the video and make sure to subscribe for more offroad and overland adventures!

I change the rear diff oil initially at 10,000 miles/one year, because my Ranger T6 tows 3.5 tons regularly. Recently changed for the third time at 80,000 miles along with a second change of the six speed automatic. Also changed the 2.2 diesel’s engine lubricating pump because they are known to fail suddenly.

Great video, I'm getting close to 25,000 on my 2019 Ford Ranger I'll definitely have to do this. Very helpful.

Thank you! Yes definitely would recommend sooner than later, though my Ranger does go under quite a bit of abuse.

Pretty easy job, I'm surprised there's both a drain and fill plug on all three items. Too bad about the transmission though. I'd do it sooner rather than later.....all that metal in there shouldn't stay in there any longer than possible.

Because the drain is higher on the diffs than the lowest part of it. It's a good idea to pump some new gear oil into it to flush the goop thats left behind, then put the drain plug back in. You'll see all kinds of crap come out.

I was thinking something similar: Use the pump to clean out the bottom of the differential; that's where the real nasty is gonna be.

Most of the world’s Rangers are rated to carry over 1000kgs. Mine seldom carries more than 600kgs and then only occasionally, although it does two 3.5 tons [7700lbs] regularly. The most regular failure on this truck has to be the rear leaf springs. I’ve replaced three for sure, probably four. They break a significant leaf and do so usually when the truck is not or only lightly loaded. The most recent was a month ago when towing an unloaded trailer weighing 1200kgs on a smooth main road. The leaf broke silently but the axle moved on one side causing the Ranger to crab steer. The two original springs were factory genuine but fairly sure most of the others were pattern parts except the most recent where a genuine Ford replacement was fitted. Can’t claim that the genuine last any longer than the pattern parts.

No I have not yet that's on the list to do more so for the front diff as it is the lowest out of the 3.

Thanks for the video! But I give up; what's the size of the hex bit needed to remove the drain/fill plugs for the transfer case? It much bigger than anything I have.

No worries, I picked up a ratchet hex set yesterday; it was 10mm. And yeah you're right, it took about 1.4 quarts, NOT the .75 (24oz) as stated in the manual. Thanks for that heads, up, I wouldn't have bought that 2nd bottle.

Great video!! I changed the driveline fluids in my Ranger at 30 000 miles. After seeing all the same metal particles, Im sorry I didn't do it at 2000!!! Did you notice an increase in torque with the new transfer case fluid, in 4L?

  • @outlandishoverland

Thank you and yeah wish I had done it a bit sooner as well. Haven't noticed any additional torque with the new fluid, usually when I am in 4L usually going a lot slower and am not on it enough to notice any changes.

@@outlandishoverland Good to know. I used Amsoil transmission fluid, and I can honestly say it doubled my torque in 4L. It startled me when I backed out of my garage in 4L. It pulled itself out and all the way down my 200 foot driveway under its own power. Needless to say, it's a big improvement offroad too.

Friend, I need your help! If I only buy some fox rear shock absorbers, does it improve the comfort of the truck? I have a 2017 4x4 diesel Ranger. I'm from Mexico. Do you recommend buying them? Thank you

Play with your tire pressure. I've always run lower pressure in the back, in my pickup trucks.

If you want to improve ride comfort the rear shocks are a place to start but would recommend leaf springs and upgrading the bump stops as well. I currently have rear shocks and icon bump stops and they make a difference, but the biggest difference will come once I upgrade the leaf springs.

Why 75W90 and not 80W90 like the book?

  • @outlandishoverland

    @outlandishoverland

    Жыл бұрын

Because Redline does not carry 80w90. Also Redline is a far superior oil than anything OEM, so 5w for cold oil is really not going to make any off a difference for far superior performing oil.
