Thanks! Got a quote for $1,154 to replace just the bushings and do the allignment. Looks like I can do it myself and replace both A-arms for $230, and then pay $100 for the alignment.
God bless KZread mechanics, saving me money every time. You're appreciated!
Thank you for the play by play showing what you can run into while doing it instead of setting it up like you won’t run into any problems. Gave me a great idea of what I’m looking at. Thanks!

Damn right. Makes me wanna get outta this OTR Rig go home and try it. Doesn't look hard at all. I like a challenge like that.
I live in Nevada and bought a 03 Silverado that was from Pennsylvania. The bottom was full of rust and so I decided to try and replace most of the front suspension. While this is a super easy project once you have rust it’s not at all easy. Instead of spending hours or days trying to smack the two 21mm or 22mm bolts out of the control arms just get an occulting tool with carbide blades and cut the bolts from inside the control arm mount. It takes like 10 minutes and a few blades but it’s better than spending 5 hours hammering on it and using can after can of pb blaster for 5 hours

Had to do ball joints on my 05 sierra denali, if everything isn't rusted in it's a pretty easy job.

I need upper and lowers but I’m not sure if I can do the lowers ... I have an alignment scheduled on Tuesday , and I have this Monday and Tuesday morning to knock out all four is it okay to just do the top ?
@BradzBuildz
2 жыл бұрын
I only did the uppers on my truck because the lowers didn’t look wore out and the bushings all looked good as well. Also when you get the upper arm loose from the spindle you can get a good sense of how wore the ball joint is on the lower arm. It should have some resistance and not just flop around easily, even with the all the weight of the spindle still on it.
Hey man...where did you jack it up to put the truck on jack stands...the safest place
@BradzBuildz
Жыл бұрын
I usually jack my truck up one side at a time and put the jack on the frame just passed the body mount. I leave enough room so I can put my jack stand in or around the same spot as the body mount. You can also jack the truck up in the front using the cross member that runs under the engine.

My truck wasn’t equipped with them. I thought it was odd myself because it’s a 2wd ss but it has torsion bars and keys. Not sure why they did that on some of them but it was way more convenient to work on.

There's a mod that will delete the torsion bar setup.

@@BradzBuildz yes I plan to mark them some how wit permanent marker thanks for the info and video I’m a carpenter and only know lil about working on cars but my thought it if I can watch a KZread video and put my transmission in by myself then I can do it myself like I did my transmission

@WilliamAllen-mc9px that’s how I get things done as well. Watch KZread and learn. Might be some work doing it yourself but it saves a ton of money.
If it's 4 wd is it same process

Mechanic shops are way over priced these days. As long as you know what the issue is and have the proper tools you can fix anything.
Use a lil "palm of the hand" impact and will getcha broke loose sometimes bro,or like you said,cheater time
This title should be its HARDER THAN IT LOOKS....lol... When that cam bolt fuses itself to the surrounding control arm, you literally have to cut the ends of the bolt off and pry out the tabs. Unless you get a nice flush cut up against the mounting tabs. ... still gotta pry.. Hey Everyone, those cam bolts are at o'Reilly's and advance auto and auto zones in the miscellaneous section. Where they sell all of the dorman shit. No employee knows this so you gotta search yourself. Go to the area where they sell the replacement window knobs and exhaust manifold bolts. And nylon fuel lines. Radiator caps etc THE HELP SECTION! AT AUTOZONE

The job wasn’t all that bad for me. Maybe my truck had never seen really harsh conditions 🤷🏼♂️

Ha, yep. Just replaced the bushings on an 05 Suburban this past weekend. Was able to wail out the bolts on one side with a 4lb sledge. Not so lucky on the other side. Out came the cutoff wheel.
Not at all easy if you live in the rust belt (Minnesota here) and have any significant miles on your vehicle. And I have the tools. Neither a torch, air hammer, or 1,200 pound torque impact wrench would free my upper control arm bolts. I used an entire large can of PB Blaster over the course of 5 days as well, spraying every time after hitting it with heat, air hammer, or impact. Nothing......they were completely rust welded in there. I had to buy carbide tipped Diablo reciprocating saw blades to make 2 cuts on each bolt to get them out. Went through 3 Diablo carbide blades but it did it.

That's why you take the extra step before the winter hits and coat your truck frame. I live in chicago and let me tell ya my truck is no where near the rust I see on everyone else's trucks 💪 😤

I am in the same boat. I live in Ohio and I have been trying to get the bolts out of mine for days. Been PB blasting and banging on them and they just budge. The strange part is the bolts turn when i move the arm up and down so maybe i am a little close to being able to get them out.

@newera305 I’ve never thought about it until now but I recently used my oscillating saw with a Milwaukee carbide teeth blade to cut the locking pin off my receiver hitch. Maybe that would work in this situation as well.
