It's a way for Deere to short-circuit the aftermarket filter replacement market and lock you into an expensive proprietary system you must buy from the dealer.

I think this "easy change" system is for people that don't normally change oil at all. It makes it very quick, clean and easy, to at least change the filter and part of the oil. If it's easy enough, more people will do it.

Thank you all! Yay $3500 CAD mower and I get to spend a day taking it to my local dealer 50 KM away to spend more on to convert to a more reliable system. Will be concerting ASAP. As a service tech when I first saw this I was very sceptical, glad their is a fix to go back to tried and true methods. The upright design makes debris removal seem unlikely in theory. 2003 L130 seemed simple and bullet proof. Wish I had saved my money and continued to maintain my old guy, my ego got me:(

  • @freecycling6687
    @freecycling66872 жыл бұрын

This "system" costs $45 as of 5/26/22. If you buy oil in five-quart jugs, it's about $8 per oil change (Two jugs = $40, enough for 5 oil changes). The oil filter's about $8. So the "Old Way" costs $16m versus $45 for the "Oil Change of the Future" way. Not to mention you're stuck with .8 quarts of oil inside a big slug of metal that the auto parts stores 'round here won't touch. Disappointing that the only guidance Deere gives is the "dispose of responsibly" boilerplate.

You will never convince me that leaving 75% of the dirty engine oil in the crank case, at oil change, is a good thing. One quart of premium oil in about $8.00. The easy change filter runs about $30 for 1/2 quart of fresh oil.

Looks easy here. It took me about 10 minutes to get mine off and then spent about 20 more minutes trying in vain to install the new filter - finally gave up because I didn't want to break the oil filter mount. Took the new filter back to the dealer and they said sometimes they stick so they gave me a replacement. Haven't installed that filter yet - will do so in the summer and hopefully all goes well. If I can install the new filter, I will leave it until it's time to replace it and that's it. I'll convert this idiotic system back to a regular oil filter system (there are videos here on KZread showing how to do it) plus my dealer sells the kit for 20 bucks but you only need a few parts anyway so you can source them yourself. The quick change system changes out about 0.4 liters of oil. With the conversion back to a regular oil filter you will be able to replace all of the oil plus I won't have to spend 70 bucks plus tax (Canada cost) for this "Hard Change" oil filter and deal with the frustration.

As a small engine mechanic for 10+ years... This idea is a bad deal for consumers and a great deal for John Deere. Consumer will accumulate grime and sludge in engine over time, more than likely delay of skip filter changes due to outrageous cost of filter leaving these machines with a smaller service life. The customer see's a new huge oil filter and thinks they are winning until they bring it in for service and get billed $40+ for a filter that use to be $6-9. John Deere I'm guessing has a good margin on these giant filters (That they bought from Briggs). Please don't become a Craftsman... John Deere you are better than this!

Bob, thanks for asking about our Easy Change™ 30-Second Oil Change System. You won't need to remove the oil from the filter that you are replacing. If you're looking to recycle the filter, many local government recycling programs, authorized retailers, auto repair stations, and auto parts stores puncture and recycle used oil filters and oil. If you have further questions pertaining to the process of changing our Easy Change 30-Second Oil Change System, we recommend reaching out to your local dealer. As pointed out, this is replacing the minimal amount of oil that can be stored in the filter. If the filter were inverted and installed up into the oil filter housing instead of down into it the filter would hold much more oil. The way it is designed, the oil is draining out of the filter. That is unless there is some kind of seal preventing the oil from draining once the filter is removed. Such a seal would make me very wary about oil flow problems. Not a good system from John Deere and the implementation of this on the economy models makes me wonder about this company. Does John Deere use this system on any of their higher end or commercial mowers?

Great question! You do not need to drain the oil in the John Deere Easy Change™ 30-second oil change system. The Easy-Change oil filter replaces about 0.8 quarts (0.76 L) of oil with every change. The benefits of this system are that engines with this system run cooler, oil quantity in the system is increased by 40%, and the filter holds more contaminants than normal oil filters do, even when the engine is off, thus extending the life of the engine.

With all do respect. I don't see anything good about this setup. Yes it can be easy etc. But the filter costs $45--$50 and you are only changing out half of the oil by doing this. Those Briggs V Twin engines hold about 2 quarts of oil. Even though you're installing a new filter and .8 quarts of new oil when doing this. You still have 1 quart of old oil in the engine. Unless you drain out the remaining oil in the sump then add new oil to make up the difference. A lot of mower manufactures now days for example Toro. On the side of their Briggs engines says. * Never change the oil. Just check and add. That is a load of crap. There is no such thing as a lifetime oil. Oil gets contaminates in it and needs to be changed out regularly to prolong engine life. I think all of this is a marketing scheme to make people buy new mowers quicker. So the engines prematurely wear out do to not changing the oil. I work on mowers for a living and I can't believe some of the stuff these manufactures are coming up with.

I did this change for a customer today and the machine had 67 hrs on it. This system was made to just make more money from the consumer imo. Over priced filter and made to wear out the engine with lower hrs if u don't do the proper draining.

Don't buy this John Deere x147r Ride on mower. Unless you want to mow a level short lawn that doesn't get too long. Maybe a bowling green would be suitable. The grass shute constantly clogs up if you mow heavy green grass so you have put your arm in and pull it all out. You have no warning when it clogs and jams the blades while the motor keeps spinning the deck belt resulting in black smoke coming out that lets you know there's serious problem. If you're lucky the belt will jump off the pulleys. Putting the catcher back on is a frustrating procedure the makes you think it from a different model. The lock catch on the catcher releases very often dropping grass out the back. The whole catcher set up is flimsy and cheap. Not too mention frustrating. Not good around trees as the catcher handle sticks up way too high and hooks onto branches. 1 hr of use after buying this brand new mower it developed an unnerving clunking sound in the deck. I've always owned John Deere and have been a happy customer, but this model is poorly engineered and designed.

This is a John deer system. You can not buy the filter from briggs, you have to go to a John deer dealer. Briggs did not.

That is the worst idea ever but I love my D130 so I'm probably going to change it back so it dont cost 50 bucks to change my oil theres no way you will ever convince me that the old oil in the crank case is refreshed by just replacing the filter Shame on you john deer for misleading the consumers!!!!

I just came here for all these non engineer boomers talking like they know anything about how an engine works. You take off and replace parts, you’re not qualified to speak to the engineering of the device.

This is a total lie. It's not easy at all, takes about a hour and tools and honestly, can't be done at home by a normal person.

WARNING - do not buy John Deere. Not only are you overpaying for this “convenience” but it doesn’t work. The old filters will not come off without significant force and due to the same flawed design, the new filters will not screw on for the same reason. Their customer service is awful, they will simply refer you to the local dealer (who is likely also awful) who will charge you $250+ to install the already overpriced filter (I paid $70) that has about $10 worth of oil and a $5 filter. What a racket and a stain on this company’s brand.

This seems like a good way to shorten the life expectancy of the engine. Gimmicky. Environmentally unfriendly.

Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. The Easy Change™ 30-second oil change system was designed around convenience to customers, while not compromising on reliability or durability of the engine. The Easy-Change oil filter replaces 0.8 quarts (0.76 L) of oil with every change and the filter's valve closes to ensure the filtered particles can't drain back into the engine when it stops. A few benefits for engines with this system are that it runs cooler and the oil filter holds more contaminants than normal filters allowing you to extend the life of the engine. You can find more information about the Easy Change system under the "Features" section of our product pages for current Easy Change models like the S120 Lawn Tractor here: spr.ly/6056dx5vg.
