    Acetone! What a great idea! I have a rental where I want to strip the PAINT. off the cabinets and return them to their natural color so they will match the railings and stairs with spindles that are close by in the dining area. Ok, a long time tenant asked if she could paint the house to "make it her own" after living there a few years, Knowing she would do a good work I gave her permission. Who'd a thought she'd paint the kitchen cabinets!! Lesson learned. There's a point in your video (2:22) when you say that you need to return moisture to the wood before you seal it in order to protect it.. My question is how do you put moisture back into the wood before the polyurethane? Because of all the mess with stripping and sanding indoors, I thought I'd have to leave the cabinets painted. Thank you so much for a great video and your sparkling personality!

  • @ShePaints

    @ShePaints

    11 ай бұрын

    Thanks for telling me about your project! I’m sorry if I was unclear, but what I meant was that when you seal it, that DOES add moisture to the wood, which in the case of that red (orange) oak, makes it look more orange unlike when it’s in a dry state, and is lighter and more neutral, does that make sense? That’s why we have to apply something to it rather than just sanding then sealing, if you don’t want it to be an orange tone.

  • @MariaFlores-ql1rg

    I love the idea of not sanding so my questions is it ok to use in an indoor environment and around puppies? Is the acetone orderless or do you recommend doing this step outside? Thanks for sharing all your beautiful work. God Bless

  • @ShePaints

    @ShePaints

    Жыл бұрын

    Thank you Maria for your kind words. The paint and topcoats are completely safe for indoors and puppies, 😃 BUT the acetone is another story!! It IS a harsh product... it has a very strong odor and probably most people wear gloves! But it lasts for only a minute or so and it dries immediately, so it's only dangerous for a minute lol. Definitely do not let your puppies near acetone while you're working with it - and you can use a stripper like Citristrip if you prefer. and if you're painting your project a solid instead of this natural wood look, you don't even have to strip if you're using chalk type paints!

  • @ShePaints

    @ShePaints

    11 ай бұрын

    Yes I have; all kinds of surfaces. It will work just fine on oak veneer (skip the acetone for sure!) For legs, it will be a tiny bit tricky, since you don't want to go over and over the surface as you try to go around (and around). If you'll use a small brush (i mean anything around two inches wide or smaller?) it will help so you're not overlapping with each stroke. It WILL work though; you'll just need to go lightly and maybe do 3 coats with each coat drying in between.

    If I try to whitewash my orange-y/honey oak cabinets, will I need to strip off the topcoat/polyurethane/whatever-it-is before I try the whitewash?

  • @ShePaints

    @ShePaints

    Жыл бұрын

    No. That is one way to get rid of the orange oak color, but it’s a heck of a huge time commitment! If you use a chalk type paint, it will go straight over the top of the current finish and bond to it so you don’t have to add primer. Primer is unnecessary & will cover up the grain . You would “wash” with a neutral but cooler tone of paint like what I used in the video (a beige or khaki tone) which will gradually change the orange and still allow a little wood grain to show through, like a traditional whitewash would. I would seal it with one coat of water based topcoat when you get the tone you like, and then go back with a whiter paint wash to create a more whitewashed look over the new wood color. Does that make sense?

  • @vm6011

    @vm6011

    Жыл бұрын

    @@ShePaints I also have the orange honey oak kitchen cabinets. I do not want to "paint" them as I prefer a wood toned cabinet - I just need to neutralize the tone. Would this taupe wash you show in this video give me a wood toned cabinet - just less orange? I don't think I want a white washed look - just less orange. Also you mentioned to use a chalk paint directly over the current finish and one coat sealer. How many years of use do you think I could get out of that before chipping occurred? Or does a wash of paint not chip? Would love a video of you redoing orange oak kitchen cabinets but still keeping a wood look.

If you're willing to sand or strip it to remove the yellow/orange tones, (and you can even bleach it after that if you want to lighten it .. i have a video tutorial doing that as well!) you can try a very light stain like Minwax weathered wood stain or "sunbleached" stain, which is supposed to give you that lighter, cooler look...

    The only thing that matters with acetone is that you get a bottle that says "100% acetone", because usually when you find it, it's in nail polish remover and has other things in it and only 50% acetone or whatever. So if you look for nail polish remover in the store, you'll see the "100% acetone" stuff and i don't know what the brand is but it won't matter!

  • @ShePaints

    @ShePaints

    9 ай бұрын

    No dumb questions! There are so many methods and products and variables with these diy things! The moisture goes back when you seal/protect it with either a water based poly or wax. Even though of course those aren’t the same as water, they do have moisture, which eventually cures and then will protect the surface forever. But if the sealer is applied over raw wood, the color of the wood is what you get, and with orange oak, I don’t want it to be that color! So I washed the wood with paint that changes the tone of the wood, and THEN seal it.

    I am so missing something. Apologies for what may be obvious. The orange and turquoise stripe: Is it paint that couldn't be removed? Is it an inlay of some kind? Is it something you decided to leave as a design feature and work with, or something you added? Not wanting to be obtuse - thanks for your reply if you circle back this far in time at some point. Great stuff.

    😂😂 Fair question! Not obtuse or rude at all, in my opinion. I did leave that from a previous finish I did because I really liked it and although I wanted to make my table more neutral again, I wanted to leave just a sliver of the delicious chippy boho design I had before. I know that for many people including my family, it’s very much a “but why?” opinion 😂 but I like it. At least for awhile longer!

    How would this work on furniture that just has an original oak wood stain with an inlay?

  • @ShePaints

    @ShePaints

    8 ай бұрын

    Hi! I think I'm not quite sure exactly which part of the process you're asking about - I think it would work the same, except that if you want to brush in the direction of the inlay, (i'm assuming there are many directions, if the inlay is also wood?) it would be a little more work/time consuming. The actual paint, water and sealer would LOOK the same. .... It would be much easier to just treat the inlay as part of the rest of the wood and brush all in the same direction. Does that answer your question? If not, please let me know!

    How to lose the natural wood finish: hide it under a coat of paint. Sheesh, really? Oh, and using a water-based paint raises the grain. You'll have a rough feel to the timber as a result. How many decent pieces of furniture are going to be (temporarily) ruined by your advice.......and who is producing, or who will produce, videos showing people how to remove the god-awful layers of paint misguided KZreadrs thought were a good idea?

  • @ShePaints

    @ShePaints

    8 ай бұрын

    Oh dear. You are so mistaken, I don't even know where to start. it's not "under a coat of paint" at all, and my table (and floors) are PERFECTLY smooth to the touch, thanks! It's a clay based paint, so mixing a little bit of water with it causes it to bond when dry, and it's smooooth, and also allows the wood grain to show through; the paint actually soaks into the grain like a stain. So the wood isn't covered up at all. Do you think I faked the video footage and photos? Can you not see the wood grain clearly?

    You always sand to remove residue of other chemicals that might react with the chemical your applying remember any decorating job you do is 90% preparation

  • @ShePaints

    @ShePaints

    Жыл бұрын

    That’s been true historically, and might still be if you’re using products with lots of chemicals, but water based, clay based chalk paints are natural and have bonding agents themselves, and they’re so workable and porous that they just don’t have reactions to any surface or prior finish. I know it doesn’t FEEL correct, but I promise you it is. I’ve been doing this for almost a decade and I’ve never had any surface react in any type of way. Now, staining raw wood with oil based products… I used to do that and I’d agree with you there.
