Most people doing oil changes will warm the oil up a bit before draining, otherwise it could be quite tedious waiting lol. Enjoyed this though.

well done! the reason honda says to start the engine for a bit is to warm up the oil a little so it'll be easier to drain, as well as letting the pump run so that all the metal shavings and filings come out easier.

There are torque specs for filter and drain plug but rule of thumb is never too tight. Also, a new crush-washer costs a few pennies, buy them by the dozen and leave them in the same place you store your oil change tools. And, buy and wear gloves, they too only cost a few bucks for 500 - last for years. Good video - thanks.

Just did this on a customer's 1998 vfr800 ,filter would not budge, don't stab it, remove right side fairing, one 8mm bolt, one 10mm bolt holds evap can on, pull off 2 hoses, unbolt, remove, very easy to do, now you can access oil filter from right side, I used a large channel lock pliers as the nut on the end of the filter had rounded off the filter was so tight, good luck, took 3.4 quarts 10w40 with filter change.

The Gentleman here...not so bad as a video, it helps you get where you want to, to get the job done. I would strongly recommend rubber gloves and a clear pair of glasses, just for safety for those who started the bike a few minutes ago, the oil might be still warm/hot. Leaning the bike is a good option while it drains and pulling out the filling plug is a must to create air flow. Just don't forget to put it back on the main stand when it's time to fill it up. Take a minute or two to cover your exhaust, make a gig that you'll be able to re use in the future. Good move for the tip on the clips, I wouldn't have known. Take care Bud

Yeah I saw that too. And it makes sense that it is higher than the full level at first fill when you use 3.3qts since the oil filter has not had any oil run through it and it retains a bit of volume. You see once motor has run the level is in the middle, as expected.

Tip for ya: Drain her on the side stand, the side of the drain plug, you'll get alittle more out. Plus if you unscrew the filter slightly it should drop down and miss the header.

I notice you don't wear nitrile gloves? Old engine oil is not so good for you. Also I wouldn't put the fairing back until the end after I'd refilled with oil as how are you going to know if there is a leak until oil drops onto the exhaust, through the fairing and onto the floor?

I have a 2008 VFR800 and the owners manual says nothing about the amount of oil needed with or without a filter change. The witness marks on the window helps. If I use an extended oil filter then, naturally, I have to add just a little more. It is recommended that 10W-30 is used but here lately all I can find that is reasonably priced is 10W-40. it works fine and so far I've not had any issues. Since mine has a center stand I don't use the wheel stands even though I have two. The center stand is so much easier to use than digging the wheel stands out of the attic.

You've seen some excellent pointers from others here, I have one more. Try pouring some oil into the oil filter, and let it absorb into the filter media before installation. This helps prevent a dry start after an oil change.

In cooler climates definitely warm the motor to help draining. Remove filler cap before draining as well. Don't be tempted to spanner/wrench the filter on. By hand till it stops then half turn max. Saw three bikes last summer covered in oil cos of over tight filters. The O ring pops out and hey presto the bike gets a complete coating of hot engine oil!In the video you said that you couldn't see the oil. Watch it back as it's to the top of the window! If you don't pre fill the filter then fill to just above the full mark. Run the bike at tick over for 10-15 seconds then watch the level . When it settles fill to just below the full mark.Keep an eye on the level before and after a ride then top up as necessary.

Nice video. Helpful to hear about the oil spilling over exhaust. Good tips here in comments about making a deflector. Worked nicely. I would hold off putting the fairing on until done putting oil in. That way you can check for leaks and tightness before putting it altogether again.

Thanks for this vid. Just got an 08. This is my first faired bike so was hemming and hawing about the whole process and the manual said do both sides, so I appreciate your tip (plus proof of concept) regarding only pulling the left side. Going to do this weekend. Sidenote: Egads don't take the dirty oil off of your bike to lubricate the seal. Your bike, but that broke my heart.

How not to change motorcycle oil & filter ... You omitted to replace drain plug crush washer (one time use washer) You omitted to lube filter seal with oil, also it's good practice to pre-fill filter with oil 1st.

10w40 is correct, but I heard you saying semi Synthetic, and Honda recommends fully synthetic oil... Other than that, drainage should be on side stand, and using KN filter is a big NO. They fail on the top nut, bursting oil everywhere!

Any how thanks for the tutorial, i think i will research and maybe even take classes to work on my motorcycle. Shops charge wayyyy to much per hour for simple things like this. $95 an hour :/ fuck that.
