I knocked out my first set of rear drum shoes today. It took me 5 hrs ( stubborn drum ). I was a little intimidated at first , but kept calm and the second one was done in a 1/4 of the time from the first. Local garages were quoting me around $185. I paid under $50 and a few swear words. But overall very happy with the results. Thanks Chris for your great how to videos. You are a gift from the DIY Gods. Us common folk are in your debt.

I don't give praise easily. A lot of You Tube content on "How To" has omissions or hyped up tutors, or both. This video was like being in the classroom with a tutor who inspires confidence, and displays obvious understanding of the task. It's been 40 years since I did this job last and was keen for a 'refresher'. This video is perfect. Calm narrative, plenty of detail, and encouragement with additional detail (slave cylinder replacement) if that was also required. There is no rating system for You Tube video's I'm aware of. If there was, I'd give this one the full 5 Star rating.

The brake spring adjuster tool is very helpful and it would be great if in a future video (if you are still doing this) contains suggestions on how to use. We knew a guy growing up who poked one of his eyes out doing a drum brake job. Back then, no one wore safety glasses. Thanks again!

Ended up getting automatic adjusters from autozone. They were too long! Difficult putting the drums on and scorched the pads for a few miles til I took it to someone and we deduced it was the adjusters, as we compared them. It was only like 2 or 3 threads. We grinded then down and everything has been great since. This guide was a lifesaver.

Good clean instructions. I also use locking vice grips so it does not slip off while stretching the springs. It also helps to bang around on the pads with your hands to make sure all is set in place.

This was very helpful and well done. I have one tip though, if it is a 25+ year old car, which many cars with drum brakes are, you have to be careful when cleaning out the backing plate etc. Old brake shoes often contained asbestos fibers and the dust that has been collecting inside the drums is therefore potentially hazardous to your health. So I always wear a respirator during the cleaning.

Excellent Video. Thank you, thank you, Thank you! My 15 year old Ranger has only 85k but recently a brake shop had to replace a rusted out brake line in the back. Ripped me off $$$$ but that's another story. They also claimed that I needed new rear brakes but I declined their further rip-off. I've done lots of disk brakes but not many drums. Got one drum off but not the other. It was stuck to the plate behind it (no movement between the drum and the studs). I pounded on it to no avail and then followed your heating instructions. As I heated it up it made a loud "pop" so I continued all the way around and it made another "pop". It's key you don't heat up the center where the axel comes through. Grabbed it with my thick gloves and slid it right off. The brakes were barely warn but there was a lot of rust etc. I cleaned it up a little and put anti seize compound on the surfaces that were stuck on both wheels and we are good to go for another 100k. Thanks again.
