    EDventures * did you have to lower the engine to get the pulley off? Other videos I've seen shows them lowering the engine but you never mention it. I don't want to mess with doing that if I don't have to!

  • @Living_EDventures

    shawna rudd Yes it is not that difficult. It is on the right side if you are standing in front looking at the engine. There are two 10mm bolts that hold the thermostat housing on. I found it easier to remove the hoses that are attached to it first to get to the bolts. Thermostat was about $16.

    I have a 2010 journey 3.5 V6 and she seems to be leaking from the bottom, center, back of engine. Any tips on what the leak may be? My wife noticed the steam coming out from the passenger side of the hood. I tried investigating and all I could see was what looked to be from underneath and in the back of engine Thanks

  • @Living_EDventures

    @Living_EDventures

    Yes it was a small leak from water pump, but it also had a blown head gasket i assume from the previous owner driving it when hot. My sister bought it a week prior and they sold her a lemon. It has been running great now. Her husband has been driving it ever since i repaired it for them. I is not an easy project but it is doable if you got the tools. One trick is look where the idler pulley bolt is and get a hole saw or drill bit bigger than the bolt and drill a hole in the frame cage there. The bolt is too long to get out without doing that even dropping the engine down is not enough to get beyond frame. Only other option is to lift engine almost out of the car which i did not intend to do. Drilling the hole saves a lot of time.It is also wise to get a new timing belt to replace as that is what turns the water pump. That will save you a future headache since most of them need replacing after 100,000 miles. It is required to remove it. The pump i bought came with a new belt and belt tensioner. Cost a little more money but trust me you only want to do this work once.

    What happened with my sister's Journey was you coul see a rust line under the pump where it was leaking. I fixed that but due to someone driving without water cause the corner og a head gasket to blow. Luckily the aluminum head did not crack. That leak was difficult to find. I just had a hunch once i put it all back together and it was still leaking that it was a head gasket or cracked head. I tore the whole thing apart twice.

    Ed so I do motors and transmission all the time never tried to do a water pump with the timing belt so what do I use to mark the timing marks ? Paint markers and do I use any gasket sealer on the new pump ?

  • @Living_EDventures

    @Living_EDventures

    It has notches on the cam gears and on the upper timing housing, also on the crank and lower timing housing. I did not use sealant as it has rubber o-ring gasket on the pump. You could use a thin bead if you wanted to.

    I aligned the marks with the belt still on then changed it. One cam gear will move when you take the tensioner off, but will religned once you put the tensioner back on. I replaced the timing belt and tensioner also since it had over 100k miles on it. This is my sister's car.

    @EDventures* Hey Ed, I just recently got a 2009 Dodge Journey SXT and my tensioner pulley would not budge an inch. I had to remove the idler pulley just to remove my belt, vice versa. Recently, my car gave me an coolant temperature warning, and I think I might have to change the water pump if it isn't the coolant temperature sensor. History wise, I've already changed the alternator, thermostat, and EGR Valve (+Tube). I also noticed that my coolant reserver likes to overflow, even though I have the coolant line at the specified line. My question to you is, if I can't remove the tensioner pulley, will I still be able to access and remove the timing chain.

  • @Living_EDventures

    @Living_EDventures

    Why can't you remove the pulley? Is it because you can not get the bolt out because it hits the side of frame/body?

    Also it is a timing belt not a chain

    @@Living_EDventures I can remove the idler pulley, but I cannot adjust the tensioner pulley, because it has locked up. This journey has allot of rusting issues. The tensioner pulley is locked up so tight that the bolt slips on a 15mm. I've used tensioner pulley wrench's and it still isn't moving or coming lose. I've sprayed the tensioner pulley lightly with blaster, no results.

    @@kepheramanjet3244 It has been a couple years since i did it. I think yes all the pulley need to be removed to get the inspection cover off. Sounds like you need a new tensioner too. I had to take the front bottom motor mount off and the belt side top motor mount off to lower the engine to get some of the stuff off.

    The video is helpful with one exception. You casually mention loosening the engine belt tensioner. That looks impossible on mine. There is about 1/2 in. clearance between the tensioner and the frame. What technique or tool combination do you use to loosen the tensioner bolt?

    There are a few companies that make a product you add to your anti-freeze coolant that will lower engine temperature a few degrees. One is called Water Wetter. Red Line Racing Lubricants makes one, also Royal Purple racing Lubricants make one. I know there are other companies that do as well. My cousin used to use it in his race car when he ran gasoline instead of alcohol.
