    Thank you for this extremely helpful video. The location of this component is just plain evil. My 98 camry 4cyl looked exactly the same and I used 2 cable ties to attach it to a nearby rubber cable that seemed sturdy enough. The car is running and idling great now.

    Pain in the Arse!!! Had the same fault. Purchased a new VSV and rerouted the VSV along with the connector and vacuum lines to the intake manifold machined holes with a 10mm bolt on the passenger side. It'll be easier for future troubleshooting instead of sending a Search and Rescue Team to find it the VSV into the abyss.

    Just an FYI OE Part # 25860-74050 for the Vacuum Solenoid Valve (VSV) + bracket OE Part # 90910-12080 for the VSV itself If you see the brand "AISIN" on the unit, that's ok too. Aisin is actually an OE parts manufacturer for Toyota like Denso. The part price should range between 30-75 dollars from Toyota or Toyota parts resellers. If you need it fast, it's available from Amazon Prime, if you have time, you can get the original part for half the price on eBay and brand new as well. --- The actual part specs are as follows. 30-35 Ohms between the two leads on the valve. No reading means it's a faulty/burnt out unit. You can further test the unit by running a 9-12VDC with Alligator Clip test leads to the unit. You should hear a click, if you hear no click, that means the solenoid is A) Seized B) The armature in the Solenoid is burnt out. Autozone also has this really great repair guide for folks who need diagrams and more tests. www.autozone.com/repairinfo/repairguide/repairGuideContent.jsp?pageId=0900c1528009266a

    Thanks for the info on this! Just finished this job on my cousin's 2000 4 cyl, the previous owner pulled the bulb and never fixed this P0401 issue. I've done it on a 98 V6 which is way easier to access at the top of the charcoal canister, this also made that infamous EVAP code go away! I gotta say that this was one of the more challenging things I've done not mechanically speaking but access wise. Some additional tips for people who might see these comments. I've used a combination of tools, because the access space and how tight the bolt was on there. 3/8" ratchet and 12mm socket, 1/4" ratchet and deep 12mm socket, (12mm ratcheting wrench, once the bolt broke loose). Flat head screw drivers to help free those vacuum lines. While the car was up on ramps, and under the car I was able to get my left arm in there enough to touch the VSV. Typically you need two hands when dealing with difficult to access bolts, I found a little secret, I took off the splash shield that covers the crank and power steering belts. That allowed me to stick my right arm through that area and touch the dreaded bolt. That sucker was on there really tight and took me a bit to carefully break it loose without rounding the head, be very careful make sure the socket is square on there before applying torque. Once it broke loose I used a ratcheting wrench to take it off all the way. Putting it back was just as difficult and took many tries to get it in there without cross threading it, I used both hands reached in there I was barely able to touch the bolt with my finger tips. You need both hands in order to get it in there properly, take your time and breaks if needed. I reset the code with Torque and a generic obd reader, not sure if it will clear on its own but that does take some time, so I didn't bother. Thanks for the info and part number Peter! saved me the trouble looking at the parts catalog to find it. Was able to get it on eBay Brand New for $47.11 shipped OEM Toyota, other option is the VSV by itself, AISIN sells this separately an you have to transfer the bracket. Good Luck All!

    Thanks for this video. My son's 2000 Camry was intermittently stalling sometimes at hwy speeds with no warning. The ECM was not showing any codes either. After cleaning a bunch of parts and changing vacuum lines, the problem still existed. I removed the VSV cleaned it and relocated it to the topside of the engine and mounted it on the end of the intake manifold cause the factory location is just stupid. I also replaced the lines going to and from it and cleaned the EGR. So far so good it's been about a month since it last stalled! First Toyota for me probably will be my last cause of other issues with it. Thanks again!

    hey john. sorry to hear about the stalling. I've never heard of that happening to camrys. looks like you fixed the problem. I would think that being at highway speeds that it would be a fuel pump issue. perhaps air fuel mixture. of the vsv and egr fixed the problem, then it was air mixture. these are great cars and very reliable. I just hope you resolved the issue for good. my camry has almost 190k miles on it and it's been nothing but good to me. hopefully your camry serves you well from this point forward. cheers.

    I just changed mine yesterday. This thing really is a huge pain to get to. What I did was remove the passenger tire, then remove the passenger fender skirt (held on by 2 10mm bolts), this allowed me plenty of room to get my other hand in and feed tools through. I used a u-joint socket adapter with a flex head ratchet. Be sure to use some penetrating oil on the bolt, the bolt is incredibly tight and rusted on in most cases. Installing it back on is fairly easy after you get it off.

    Thanks for the video. I changed the VSV on a '97 Camry this past weekend. However, I did find it easier to take the passenger side front wheel off to get to the VSV. I just couldn't find a good way to get a socket and drive on the bolt to loosen it without removing the tire. I used a socket wrench with a u-joint and a 6 inch extension to get the bolt off and tightened back up. I also found out that it's probably better to remove the rubber hoses to the VSV before removing it from the block. Probably good idea for the electrical connector too if possible.

    egr almost never breaks. try the cheapest part first starting with the egr modulator. the circular part next to the egr. roughly 22-25 bucks. then clear code and drive again. you can check the old part if the bottom hole doesn't hold vacuum, then it needs replacement. it shouldn't allow air to flow freely. if this doesn't solve the problem, then change vsv. so clean the egr, check or change modulator then vsv.

    @@c3sarbeatz96 I had this problem and the AutoZone test told me it was the EGR valve. Replaced the valve, still came up with the P0401 code after a bit of driving. Got an inexpensive modulator and vsv and will replace them (in order) and test again for each to determine which might have been the issue. If I still have the problem after that, then I'll have to check the hoses and see if there is blockage (I have heard the most common blockage is at either end of the EGR valve, but I'm kind of experimenting for the experience in checking the issues with this).

    So, it wouldn't be easier with the tire removed on passenger side on the 2001 4 cyl Camry? Did you buy chance use a vacuum to help keep carbon from falling back into the intake where the EGR mounts? So was thinking to use my most powerful vacuum and a flat blade screwdriver to clean out the carbon where the EGR mounts so the carbon doesn't fall into the intake and goes up the hose into the vac. My Camry only has 1016k and runs like a sewing machine, but EGR code says EGR needs replaced. Also, it's getting bad milage at only 15 combined so will a bad EGR cause this poor gas milage? Car doesn't use any oil either when I change it every 5k miles. Thank you

    Thank you for sharing this video. So I'm trying to solve a P030 code I keep getting and the reason I am looking here is after replacing timing belt I found a little plastic "barrel" looking thing that had broken off something (looks identical to piece on the VSV) I was never able to find where it came from but after looking the part up I'm positive it is part of VSV. Initially the engine ran fine with no codes then after several weeks the check engine light came on and it was p0304 code (misfire number 4 cylinder), I cleared that and a few days later I get p030 (multiple random misfire) I get code usually daily and it is mostly p030 but every once in a while it comes up p0304. Am I thinking in the right direction on this VSV? Along with timing belt, water pump, head gasket and injector O-rings I replaced plugs and wires I have also changed the fuel filter. I also just replaced the battery as it was running < 12.5 v The engine runs a little rough at idle but seems perfect at higher rpm (2000 and above) also idles rougher at a stop when in gear (automatic) than if I put in neutral. could this piece being missing from VSV be causing my issues? Thanks for your help

  • @PeterZafra

    @PeterZafra

    9 жыл бұрын

    Travis Martin Hey Travis. That plastic part is a mystery to me. The VSV valve might not be the problem to your random misfire code. I suspect either a clogged EGR valve remaining open during cold start or possibly a cracked ignition coil. These camry's came with 2 ignition coils. so 2x2 =4 cylinders. If one coil is bad, then you can get 2 misfire codes pointing to one coil which you got, and also a possible random misfire code which you also got. Please check your coils to make sure that none of them have a crack on it. usually due to the valve cover leaking oil into the coils, they tend to crack or ground unoticed. The VSV valve can almost never relate to any random misfire or misfire code. usually only EGR related will the vsv cause any issues. like P0401. I would start at the coils to make sure they have no crack because these tiny hairline cracks can cause a rough idle and a random misfire since each coil services 2 cylinders. keep me posted. thanks.

    Quick question (and a bit of a memory test for you, since it's several years since you did this job).....I need to change this on my '97 Camry (P0401 code....Already replaced the other 2 culprits - EGR valve, modulator - and still popping the code, so this is the next and hopefully last item to replace. Anyway....) I 'll be replacing my front struts in the next few weeks.....Do you recall when you did the VSV replacement thinking to yourself, "Wow, if only the passenger side strut wasn't in the way this would be a lot easier"....I'm just figuring that - as long as I have the strut off - it would be perfect to do the VSV at the same time.

  • @PeterZafra

    @PeterZafra

    9 жыл бұрын

    Hey Jeff, I heard that the Dorman works as well but I just decided to go OEM just so I know it would be for sure. The 92 camry VSV has a big chance to be in the same spot because its almost the same motor. I believe its the 3sfe as oppose to the 01 which is a 5sfe. If you have a problem locating it, just follow the hose coming out of the EGR modulator then it should lead you to the VSV. Make sure you try to clean the EGR and modulator first. FOr the most part, if the modulator filter is dirty, then most likely your modulator is broken. the modulator should hold vacuum as well. Good luck.

    Sorry for the late reply. I don't have a video for changing the egr valve for an 02 camry and I'm not sure if it's an electric one or vacuum activated. If it's been bypassed, I'm guessing g eletric. Usually held on by 2 bolts. To locate the vsv, follow the 2 small hoses coming from the egr valve. That should lead you to the vsv. The two hoses might be coming from the modulator if you have one. But usually, cars equipped with electric egr valve doesn't have modulator. Hope that helps. Good luck
