Replacement Kwikset Dead Latch→amzn.to/2dCbEww (Half-moon shape)
Replacement Schlage Dead Latch → amzn.to/2eel8hr (Square shape)
The above links are for replacement latches for EXTERIOR doors, aka DEADLATCH
Normally you want to only replace the latch if possible, but in this case, I replaced the whole lockset.
Lockset I used→ amzn.to/2eeo7qd
Usually, it’s the exterior latches that fail. In this video, we cover a few things to look out for when changing door locks. As you see in the video, it's never straightforward. You fix one problem and discover three more. Many times when latches and locks fail it is because the door was not framed correctly and it is putting stress on the lock.

Thanks. One of the very few videos I found helpful on my first lock change.

I’m a real dummy. I tried to force fit one of these deadbolt latches onto a door lock that originally had a spring latch. Your video showed me how to make the conversion go a little smoother. Albeit such stupidity, by me, should have never been attempted in the first place (I was being lazy and cheap); you successfully explained the alignment problem with the internal latch mechanism. A 20 minute job took me all day because I couldn’t comprehend why these doorknobs are designed so differently: that one doorknob is not interchangeable with another by style or even brand. We’ve literally screwed up doorknob installation for the average dummy like me. 🙄😩✌️

Liked it allot, the only suggestion would be to use a longer wood screws on the hinges... Yeah the extra wood and glue are OK but better to dig in deep with the screws. Make sense? Your presentation is always excellent...

Yeah you are right. I was not planning to be there that long and had to do a "for now" repair on the hinge. On the lower hinge I was able to use the long security screws that came with the new door knob. Thanks for watching. I enjoyed the comment.

I have had luck using a golf tee instead of toothpicks to fill the space in the hole. Just tap it in and cut it off. Very Slick.

Thank you..thank you...thank you! Ready to get out and get this party started! Sure wish I had known about NOT closing the door and getting stuck. Fortunately I had LARGE screwdriver and a big hammer. However, I don't recommend that method. This old lady's bladder was near bursting. That;s right, I said BURSTING!. Well speaking of that, I need to .....

Is there a proper side up on the exterior key? Rough side of the key up or smooth back? Does it matter?

How easy is it to change out door locking door handles and deadbolts to a different brand of lock? I have old tarnished Titans that came with the house and would like to switch to better quality schlage locks. Not sure if it's a basic swap or if I have to do any modifying?

Am i the only person having a hard time with the phillips screws when putting the knobs on? The knob gets in the way and makes it difficult to get a good angle. I saw how he did it with no issue but i cant seem to get them in as easily. Im using the screws that came with the package. Am i just missing something?

I noticed on your outside entry door that you have the locking pin and flat side facing outwards. I have an outside door that opens inwards but I put the flat side of the latch with the locking pin facing outwards. I need the key outside to lock the assembly. If I put the latch the other way with the curved side facing outwards I noticed that I can lock the door with the inside knob and accidently lock myself out. The way it is now, the door will not close if the inside knob is already in the lock position, this way I can't accidently lock myself out. It's a Weiser Brand lock called a Yukon Entrance Knobset. I also noticed that with the curved side facing out that by slipping something thin between the door and the frame pressing against the curved side that you can open the door while locked. Which is the correct way to install the latch on an outside door that opens inwards?

after watching a couple of these youtube videos, you tend to know more than most HD/Lowes employees. I go there maybe 1-3x a week (I manage 20 units) and it's not uncommon for me to help someone in the plumbing aisle and then 2-3 people line up to ask me how to do something or which part to get. then there are those employees who are so knowledgeable that they could make $100k+ a year as a plumber.

That door knob doesn't meet ADA requirements for a commercial building. It should have been replaced with the same style that was removed.
