    Real helpful! My clutch cable snapped as I was driving home tonight, still had a little bit of cable left but could feel the lever go slack. Just about worked well enough to get me home, but won't take the bike out until I get it sorted.

    I changed a clutch cable once before on a CB750-K over 30 years ago, but this video gives me courage to go out do again on my V-Star 650 this evening with confidence I can ride again tomorrow. Had to laugh though, when I noticed that fire extinguisher on your ride. You never know when you might come across a burning squirrel or something while on the road!

    I was attempting to slow down to turn left when it snapped. There was a narrow concrete median in the center, so I brought it to a stop as close to it as I could, so cars could go around me. Lucky for me, two driver's stopped and helped me get it off the road, and then one went and got his trailer and drove us home. I was very fortunate. Just got the old cable off, hopefully my new one shows up tomorrow.

    Great videos Bernbo. The delayed friction zone on V Stars seem to be part of owning one. I've had my 2009 Classic since 2018. I have yet to find any info on widening the gap for it to engage. I learned to ride on a Suzuki and it seemed to be a much easier ride. I still find myself occasionally opening up too soon and killing the engine.

    My man, I'm adjusting my bikes clutch cable but for some reason for the life of me, no matter how I adjust the lock nuts, I can't get the clutch to disengage. I was installing a kit to help me move the friction zone closer to the bar and I almost had it right but now it won't let me get into first from neutral without stalling. It was working perfectly well before the kit I installed, and I took it off and I'm still having issues. You think I stretched my cable out or should I look into clutch rebuilds

  • @bernbo

    @bernbo

    3 жыл бұрын

    The clutch friction zone is quite far from the grip on the 650, you should try and adjust for it that way. I don't think you need to redo your clutch. It can be tricky to get it back to where you had it originally.

  • @bernbo

    @bernbo

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes you should use both jam nuts for adjusting and locking it down when you get it set. Not sure why you're not able to. If both cables are exactly the same it should work. You may need to adjust up at the lever to gain more length.

However, my clutch is not engaging and when I start it-put it in first it dies. I have replaced my clutch lever, clutch perch, cable and still not engaging. I'm not sure where to go from here. Question: would the nut adjustment at 5:10 allow me to move the friction zone closer or further away from the handle/grip? If so, are there any other parts i need to adjust to achieve this? My fingers don't allow me to comfortably cover the clutch. Not having the lever soo far out will help me finally put some miles on my motorcycle this coming riding season.

    Hey Jonathan, unfortunately not, the friction zone on the 650 is like that, it was something i had to get used to. If you search it out i think i saw a kit or something you could install to remedy that or at least make it better, but that was years ago. Sorry i couldn't be of more help .

    Hey Bernbo, great tutorial!! Thanks for that... On my bike, I have another problem though, it would seem like the spring where the cable attaches in the engine (the clutch shaft) is kind of loose, so if I tighten the cable I have no clutch, because the spring doesn't push the shaft all the way out. is that easy to replace? it's pretty tight right underneath the cylinder heads... Hope my explanation is clear enough and that you can help me! Cheers, Rami

    ***** Thanks for the reply bud! Actually, I've been Googling around a little bit and it would seem like the high biting point is kind of normal for the XVS650. I even found a little "kit" on ebay, that's pretty much a spring between the lower adjuster locking nut and the clutch swivel arm connector (yes, that's the word for it), which basically will push said arm back and allow more regulation on the clutch level. Do you have the same thing on yours where it bites at almost full release of the lever?

    Ramiro Tarrico Villafañe That's true the 650 V-stars are known for the high biting point. Mine is the same way I just got used to it and don't even think about now. Nice find on ebay bro. Cheers

    Oh cool, thanks for confirming the theory of the high biting point. It was fine with the smaller gloves for me, but I have to say that as the Autum rolls up in Ireland, it's gettting more difficult to get out of traffic lights with the bigger gloves. This is what I'm talking about btw, might be useful for someone else: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/262066458754?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&fromMakeTrack=true Just a spring really, but it actually looks like it does the trick. Thanks again for your responses and keep up the good work.

    Hey Happy CHick That's exactly what I learned when I bought my 650, this is actually how they are on the 650 vstar. I tried to fix this with no success, it is just something I had to get used to. Sorry I don't have a fix for you on this.
