    I fillet my whiting but scale them first and leave the skin on as I think it adds to the taste when cooked, but each to his own. I use a plastic burley cage but put about a 12 oz sinker in it and it works fine. Most of my whiting fishing is done in about 10-14 metres here in West Oz. I really enjoyed your video.

    I was thinking of giving a few additional tips in this comment, but you really have covered it all mate! Great fun the whiting. This time of year, they are everywhere and good size. Western Port has had heaps of fish in the mid 40's being caught. The new moon has quietened them down a bit and the average size has dropped too, but they should be back on the chew big time now. Just wish I could get back out there to get into em before they disappear down south for the winter. Not this week though.

    Thats no good about the boat. I hope its nothing major as repairs right now are going to be very difficult. I did minor damage to my kayak a few weeks ago I was shattered all week, thankfully its repaired now but I think because we love fishing so much we take it to heart when we cant use our beloved fishing toys. I can imagine how much fishing I would do if i was single, raising 2 kids with special needs sure makes juggling family, work and fishing challenging at times. Rockfisho here: Fishing is super expensive these days - bait - and just bait for a few hours - $20 and that's without paying for burley. Hooks 3-4-5 bucks a pack, swivels, sinkers, line, knives, lures, fuel, license and buckets even all cost money and have an attrition rate in the harsh conditions. I do my absolute best and look for deals on ebay and target but it's not the frugal passion it once was. 30-40-50 dollars an average trip, 100 if you want to have a red hot crack. It's wrong how prohibitively expensive it's become.

Maybe a bit of a help to you......As you take off the fillet, stop your knife just before you completely cut toe fillet off, then just flip the fillet over and continue on to take the skin off. Saves lot's of time. You should end up with the frame with both skins still attached.

    Hi Alan I know this video is 3 years old but I found it quite interesting. I remember about 20 years ago; I went down to my old haunt; the Patterson River estuary before they started to work on the area, to do some flathead and whiting fishing. I remember I fixed by my squid bait to the hook, and made sure it was quite secure . I waited a few minutes and brought the line back in, only to find the squid bait was gone. I thought that the Flattie or whiting must have had a slide rule to work out how to get the bait off the hook without arousing any suspicion. I baited up again and had a go about five or six times only to have the bait nicked again and again. When speaking to another angler, he told me that there were a lot of SEA LICE in the area which can strip a hook as quick as look at them. Some months later a Police Members went missing whilst scuba diving. The results were quite scary as for when the remains were eventually located, it looked like the Sea Lice had made a mess of the poor chap. I had been fishing at the Carrum Creek as a young lad and had never encountered anything such as sea lice, in those early years between 1961 and 1980. I know I am 3 years behind the times Alan but I really love your videos. Thank you again for a very informative video.

  • @fishingmad

    @fishingmad

    Thanks Angus I appreciate the kind words. Yeah sea lice are really strange things. At night time in PPB when its not a full moon they are in massive numbers and demolish baits so quickly. Fishing at night for snapper, gummes and whiting ca be very diffiuclt when they are around thats why we only fish at night during strong tides and full moons. I can only imagine what they would do to things and people left underwater for some time

  • @fishingmad

    Hi Peter. Firstly I'm very sorry to hear about your motor bike accident. That must be really tough for you. Depression can be really overwhelming. I got some professional help last year to help me deal with it and it really helped. It was around the time i filmed this kzread.info/dash/bejne/hmeopZian8ivhZM.html and I spoke about the positive effects fishing can have for those with depression. Anyways to answer yes Whiting can take soft plastics but 99% of people target them with baits as they actively take baits there very finicky and quite challenging to catch with soft plastics and lures. I have only caught them using worm imitation soft plastics, some paddle tails and some long skinny surface lures like the sugar pens. I hope that helps.

    Wow at the cost of that burly, I could buy a lot of whiting fillets at the local fish shop. Its a dilemma I've faced for about 40 years of fishing. Just not sure why you spend so much time advocating the metal/lead burly bucket/bomb (which I also have) and why we shouldn't use plastic ones when your first drop for whiting threw out a plastic version you were using??????????
