How to catch RAZOR CLAMS - Coastal Sea Foraging - Catch & Cook - Dorset Fishing - Low Tide Foraging

Ойын-сауық

I go coastal sea foraging in search of RAZOR CLAMS on a sandy beach using salt as the 'lure'. Razor clams live below the surface of the sand and believe it or not, you can encourage them out with a bottle of salt. I've done this many times in Cornwall, mainly to use as bait for sea fishing but this time we cooked them up on the coals!
Once we collected a load of razor clams, we got a driftwood fire going and smoked them between a bundle of heather, which was collected from the sand dunes.
The rest was a blur!
This video was filmed on the beautiful Dorset coast.

What I do with clams is keep them alive in a bucket cover them in corn meal and cover them with seaweed. They will eat the corn meal which replaces the sand in their guts. That way you can eat them whole without all that grit.

I don't eat them as I strongly dislike seafood but went to catch them with my friends and they all complained they were bitches to cook and eat because of the sand and doing something like this always came up in convo but don't think we ever actually tried

This looks like a sport all in itself! Just like catching nightcrawlers! When I went to Maine as a kid, I remember my dad going clamming and seeing all these long, thick worm like things sticking out of the sand when the tide was out! I never touched them or cared to touch them, BUT THIS brought all those great memories flooding back to my brain! I guess with regular clams, they keep their heads out of the sand... without salt?

I live in New England. I dug up some razor clams but they were stumpy versions of the traditional mollusk. It took some research to find its name was stout razor clamp. Then the research petered out with very little further information...... other than it is the most common shellfish from Maine to South American. The most numerous shellfish on the eastern side of the Americas and bugger all information on it. As a bait, as a food you treat it like the lankier razor clam..... I guess.

Okay so I'm not an expert in any way shape or form. And if you don't appreciate my comment i'll delete it or you can, but some of the things you said are just kinda not true. Well i mean they could be, but you pouring salt on the holes like that, it's just not going into the holes fully or its seeping very slowly in them. Try mixing A LOT of salt in water and then pouring that into the holes. The clams will pop out a lot faster as the dense salty mixer sinks to the bottom quickly.

I've never caught razor clams, but I know for years the prevailing opinion was that you had to remove the 'foot' because it was effectively 'barbed' or 'studded' to give it more traction in the sand - doesn't look like it gave you much trouble, though!

I enjoyed your video but as a commercial clam digger in Massachusetts who is mainly focused on razors I do know that the salt works but what people do not realize is that by adding that much salt your actually damaging the meat of the clam if the pom is too highly salt concentrated your essentially destroying the clams meat which will kill it faster and razors have a very short shelf life as it is but for just getting some to eat that's the easiest way
