How To Catch/Find Hellgrammites: BEST Fishing Bait (Smallmouth Bass)

~Gear & Tackle Used Linked Below~
If you are a serious smallmouth bass fisherman then you know that these alien looking creatures, hellgrammites, are one of the best baits for smallies. Hellgrammites also make great fishing bait for a number of other species found in creeks like bluegill, rock bass, sunfish & other bream!
Cast Net: amzn.to/2Lb6SZz
Cast nets are probably the best tool to use to catch yourself some live bait. If you see a school of minnows a single cast can get you enough bait for the entire day!
Seine Net: amzn.to/3dwrLKU
A seine net is a great option if you are trying to get bait in a shallow creek or river where a cast net won't be as effective or may get snagged. Seine nets are also very effective at catching other creek critters such as hellgrammites & crayfish! And as you saw above a seine net is a great option to collect yourself some madtoms!
Dip Nets: amzn.to/3dzOe9T
Dip nets are a very effective tool to catch live bait if you are trying to catch bait relatively quickly. Placing it down below a rock in a creek and then lifting up the rock is a super efficient way to catch any bait that may be hiding underneath.
Circle Hooks For Live Bait: amzn.to/2YHCXjB
Variety of sized circle hooks - we pretty much exclusively use circle hooks when using live bait. Eagle claws are sharp and get the job done!
Fishing Hooks For Bass: amzn.to/2SNZE1Q
A variety of sizes of offset shank hooks - perfect for rigging trick worms and other plastic bass baits. Gotta have that EWG for more hook ups on bass.
Trick Worms: amzn.to/3duwNHL
Trick worms are our go to for bass fishing if we dont get live bait. Seedless watermelon and June bug are my favorite colors but it's good to have a variety of colors to match the conditions you are fishing!
Bullet Weights: amzn.to/2YKmzyK
When the bass haven't quite made it to the shallows it is always helpful to have the bullet sinker to get it down faster.
Spinner Baits: amzn.to/2xJ2oWN & amzn.to/2Wzr6S2
Didn't use them today, but they are killer for bass. Those shiny blade make the bass hop on your line and next thing you know you are saying BOOYAH!
Bass Fishing Rod: amzn.to/3fDD4mm
Ugly Stiks - 7' medium action: A great bass fishing rod that's at a fair price. Sturdy, well built and will last you a long time!
Bass Fishing Reel: amzn.to/2YJDmSs
20x or 25x Pflueger Presidential reels are high quality and fairly inexpensive. A great fishing reel for bass and just about any other fish you'll target in freshwater!
Bass Fishing Rod & Reel Combo: amzn.to/2YJzFfO
Penn Battle II has the best bass fishing rod & reel combo on the market in terms of value. A great setup at an inexpensive price! The great thing about getting a Penn is that you can not only use this for freshwater, but saltwater as well!
Fishing Line: amzn.to/2WCnO05
Pretty much my go to fishing line for most of my freshwater setups I like to go 8 or 10 lb test for bass and generally go a heavier for big flathead/blue catfish).

I built a screen for catching Dobsons (hellgrammites) and Tonies (MadToms, Stone cats) using 1/4 inch PVC board, 1/4 inch screen, 4 inch piece of rebar for legsand an old lawn mower handle for the front to lift it up out of the current when im working by myself. And it works really well and wish I could post pictures.

In the eastern panhandle of West Virginia many small mouth bass anglers like using square "umbrella" minnow dip nets. Prop it on it's side (or have someone hold it in place), down stream of the rocks you want to rake, and the minnow net is the perfect weave size to catch lots of hellgrammites in fewer harvests while filtering out muck, small stones and silt.

We used to take a screen door and a garden rake out into the middle of a river to catch these. We called them clippers, but I just found their correct name is Hellgrammites.

Thanks buddy! Good question! We grew up fishing and watching fishing shows on TV but never really saw any that went into the fine details around techniques, finding fish, where to fish, baits, etc. And it's nice being able to send a link to family that lives out of state to show them what we are doing! Yea I think just making videos that really are focused on helping viewers...so providing useful/helpful information! That's been our main focus! Good luck my man!

Good tutorial. Do you fish them under a bobber or weighted on the bottom?

  • @StopFishingStartCatching

    @StopFishingStartCatching

Usually under a bobber off the bottom...they like to get themselves stuck on rocks and such if they can get to the bottom. You can also free line them and just time it to reel them in before they get a hold of the bottom!

If you smear their back "legs" off against a rock with another rock, they can't HOLD onto rocks on the bottom. Less chance of getting hung up. They will climb back under a rock.
