How to catch Blackfish/luderick (catch & clean)
G'day Legends, this week good mate Bob and I head out chasing luderick on centrepin Alvey's, floats and green weed. After a slow start the fish come on the chew and we have an absolute ball chasing these estuary brawlers.

Cheers guys, nice show. 8 -9°C is perfect weather...I use bread only. 80% of fish I catch are Ludericks. I am disabled, fishing from my mobility scooter, so it is very hard for me to get the weed or get on the sand. I caught lots of mullets and bream , but I just love catching Ludericks. It is sooooo much fun
It's so bloody funny you posted this video today. I was literally walking along the breakwall with my wife this arvy watching the old boys smacken the ludds and I mentioned how bloody boring that style of fishing is....couple hours later she's confused why I'm watching 50min video on it!! Hahaha now I wanna give it a crack!!!

Brian hahaha mate you guys wouldn’t understand. Below 30 degrees in Queensland is classified as cold. It’s a different kind of cold to what you guys get over there... sort of 😜🤣🤣🤣
This was my old man's favourite style of fishing so we did lots of this growing up, collecting weed and laying out on old Hessian bags keeping it damp, rigging up with home made floats and home made rods, it was a process but that was part of the pleasure spending hours in the shed getting prepped. It was years later I learnt the species name Luderick dad used to call them by a different name 🤐.. Quite a strong iodine flavour if you eat em. We were in the Newcastle area but I can't remember the exact fishing locations but I do remember it was very popular, lots of older blokes out. Late 60's early 70's
Thanks Sam and Bob. Great vid. Look forward to giving this a go!!

Hey Sammy, appreciate this was a few years ago but a couple of tips for you…. Use daiichi 2171 hooks in size 8 or 10 - they pin blackfish better than anything else I’ve tried - much better than the little green hooks! For cabbage, only use 1 leaf, don’t fold it but lie your hook alongside the leaf. Half-hitch twice on the leaf above the hook then very lightly place the hook through the single leaf. Looks much more natural & you’ll pin significantly more fish! Tight lines for the upcoming season! 🤙

I have use braid for several years now it gives better strikes as before I used monofilament . The best weed is the long tough strands with no 9,10 mustard hooks, best time is early morning on the run up tide over 1.5 mt high .
oh i love using the float wen targeting piper/garfish. have tried it for luderick b4 too wen they were around the surface but i found the running rig more effective for the bigger ones. they r gr8 to target especially on light tackle

Do you know what’s more fun than blackfishing in a boat? Blackfishing in a kayak! I managed to get amongst a few yesterday. One was an absolute kilo plus stonker that smashed my knuckles as the centrepin spun backwards on its initial run. Left them biting after the keeper net showed half a dozen. 3 feeds for my family on one small morning session. Love the luderick!

Centre pins and alvys are not needed , I use a standard egg beater reel and catch them without the outlay for something you don’t need to catch ludric or blackfish .

Where are you guys fishing in the jumping pin as I want to get back into catching blackfish again ,don’t have to be exact just need a starting point. I used to catch heaps in NSW many thanks for your help
There is something therapeutic about staring at a float waiting for a down. They fight different to most fish. They don't run too far, but if you try to bring a good one too soon they will get you every time. The spots that used to be shoulder to shoulder 40 years ago are mostly unfished now. Hopefully a few more young fellas will give it a crack.

I like using a 6-7 weight fly rod with a spinning reel. Can't stand centre pin reels. Also on the hooks I use owner mosquito hooks. Much better hookup rate than the mustad snecks.

Nice lill tip given me by me pop and great uncle was to throw the rig out to wherever you are going to be drifting to and then pinch a blob of vassaline and the line between your thumb first two fingers and wind in The line then floats and without the bellie in the line you'll have a better hookup rate

People say that Ludes can only be caught on weed but I caught one on a chunk of pilchard. I was salmon fishing off rocks and i noticed that when i threw away a mutilated pilchard bait the ludes under me were eating it. btw down here in SA they are huge compared to those you have. although ours look a little different

They have been known to take other baits but they almost only eat weed. Also I've had plenty of luck just using a bream rod with no float, really pisses people off when ur catching them infront of people with full luderick setups
The classic parore
Yeah iv had a go at fishing for them this way and didnt like it.. I moved to the south coast where winter fishing shuts down. I wondered past the local wharf one night and was packed with lud fishos... they use a padanosta single hook rig. Hook sits just above the hook and is just off the bottom.. use nippers or worms and they kill it.. i adopted this method and can clean up pretty much any night during the winter..biggest one to date is 46cm

@russ1185

Sorry mate, i meant the hook when dangling sits just above the sinker.. no casting its just simple straight down under the wharf. Tight line all times no slack.. the lud bite is so different to any other bite. The rod tip will bounce . Set the hook and hang on. Good fun
Go to just about any harbour or small jetty in nz and Chuck some frozen veggies in and you'll slay these, no on here try to catch them

The weedy taste is true. We fished off the rocks and we kept them alive in a catch net in a rock pool. When we finished up they were bled and then immediately gutted, the gut cavity has a black lining, we brought a pot scrubber with us specifically to remove all traces of this lining. Keep alive, then bleed, then immediately gut and remove ALL the black lining and voila you then have as good a whole fish with succulent white flesh as you could want. On a broader note, other fish also can have a black lining of the stomach cavity this should also be promptly removed to improve taste. If you want to take on a brawler, the Ludderick's big bad cousin the Rock Blackfish or Pig will happily bash you up. They will take weed but as they are often much more massive than Ludderick you get smashed. Pigs were very unpopular among Blackfishermen for this reason, think what chance you with your rig would have against a 10lb Ludderick.

Hitzke, Ya Mug..... Take your 11 foot beach rod, your center pin reel and green square hooks and throw all of them to the shit house, then replace it with the 9 foot Gary Howard estuary that Bob was using, a 2500 spinning reel and some really small circle hooks. You will have a much more enjoyable experience along with a lot more fish and you wont shut the school down..
Good one Sammy , there good fun to chase . Did you bleed them as soon as you killed them ? makes a big difference eating wise.

Long rods were designed for rock fishing not boat fishing. You'll do better with an 8ft rod and a longer net handle so you don't high stick your rod, breaking the tip trying to reach the fish. Bleed the fish or they can taste gamey.
