Hi all, after enjoying catching some beautiful chinook salmon from the Somass River on Vancouver Island a few weeks ago, I sat down with Kevin to talk about the season for this fishery. He also provided an overview of the gear you need to use and adjustments which you can make to catch more fish. If you haven't checked out the episode "High Water Chinook Salmon and Mushrooms", please watch it at: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mHZnqNGbc8TWotI.html

Kitty, can you explain the cast you're using with your pin? It looks like a BC swing but it seems like you're starting the reel with your off hand? How's that work? CSL

I'm having a hard time understanding the regs for this river. Are you allowed to fish down stream of the tidal boundary?

Sorry Andrew, I've been trying to find the regs or get someone who is familiar with them to answer this question but haven't been successful yet. It might be a good idea to phone DFO's office in Port Alberni or Gone Fishin' in town.

@@FishingwithRod well spent from 10am-3pm there today at somass Park. Not a single fish, people were catching them all around me. Seemed like most people were flossing, but I could be wrong. Maybe just wasn't my day.

4 foot leader=flossing come on Rodney you shouldn’t even post that! I guess flossing is ok on the island right? 😔

fisherkid1999 definitely not true you can’t even really floss with a float.... as well I’ve side drifted with roe with 6 ft leaders all in the mouth...

@@ZSIY you can floss with 18" of leader and a float if the fish are stacked enough

Zesiy and yea when you floss the hook ends up in the mouth most of the time hence the word “floss” unless you floss your ass or something?

@@Ad19995 You're very much generalizing when you say that a 4' leader certainly means flossing. When the water is clear and the flow is slow, chinook salmon can actually be pretty finicky so your bait needs to be farther from your weight. Also, I have seen people floss with floats, but it is very unproductive and those people are very often outfished by good roe fishers. Also the people I have witnessed flossing with floats use 6'+ leaders, and always set the hook at the end of every drift, so it wouldn't make any sense to use roe while flossing.

fisherkid1999 Flossing using bait? Using floats? Seriously, you need to think before you type.
