Looking for an easier fly rod to cast? Check out my fly rods at fishonrods.com/ , I have designed a fly rod that uses a moderately fast action blank with a parabolic power taper that truly is easier to cast. Every fly rod is custom built to order right here in the PNW. Cheers and FISH-ON!!

I have been searching for this exact remedy like a madman on YT. I'm a noob to the fly fishing world, and the amount of frustration that a double dropper has brought into my first summer with a fly rod, has nearly broken my desire to become a successful fly angler. I swear every 3 casts I was spending 10 min untangling a mess, or retying my whole setup. Your channel has taught me so much! Can't wait to try this out. Thanks, and keep cranking out the great instructional content.

I love that! This is why I do what I do. Great story, and I appreciate you sharing it with me. The pickup and lay-down cast will be a game changer for you-using this technique will reduce your tangles by 90%. Thank you for the kind words; I just read this to my wife, and it brought a big smile to both our faces. Cheers and FISH ON!

I have a friend, Tim Stone, who can cast 2 corkies, with a double fly set up, a couple split shots on 16 feet of 5x tippit under branches on the other side of Metolius size rivers. He spots fish like an osprey, he can wade and fish places that I can’t reach with a staff. He once slept in his wet waders , on the Deschutes, wastes too much time getting in and out I guess. Once observed in the river, fishing one handed eating a peanut butter sandwich. Etc. God knows how he does it.

Typical Metolius fisherman. Gotta be like that to catch a fish on that river. She's a cruel mistress. She's beautiful, but damn she's a bitch.

I used to get tangled a lot with multiple fly setups. It’s definitely gotten better with your style of casting This is great advice

Love your videos Dan, one helpful tip for me would be to see how your hand position changes when you’re lifting and putting the line down. Also how the height of your rod tip might vary from a false cast.

I have "water loaded" since you showed that in a video last year. Best tip ever. I do not false cast, much at all. I am getting better, but still doing well.

Another great video, FFD, and I hope your channel continues to grow. Nice, relaxed casting demonstrated here. It may be a personal preference, but given the stream size am curious if you like the lift instead of just executing a roll cast. For me, I only pick up my nymphing line if I need to bomb a huge cast or are fishing from a boat. ☮ from North Idaho.

Hello justal! If I am in tight spaces, I'll execute a roll cast, but whenever possible, I prefer the pick-up and lay down cast just to keep things from stacking up on itself.

Have you ever heard of the “roll cast”? No false casting involved. It might help even more than the “pick up and lay down” that I’ve never heard of. Check it out!

Thanks Dale, I have heard of the roll cast and use it often. When casting two heavy flies and an indicator, I find using the pick up and lay down cast much more effective. Roll cast works great with a single fly for sure.

As a tenured guide I always taught to use a much larger loop arm motion when preloading the rod for roll casts . And stream bank choice is key , why cast from the left bank when you are right handed ?
