HOW TO CAST HYDROSTONE PLASTER into a Mold / Mould Tips & Techniques

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I discuss methods for casting and explain the nature of plaster and hydrostone and how it behaves inside the mold. I’m also sharing with you some wonderful techniques to eliminate air bubbles and explain why air bubbles occur. It is my hope that this video aides you in creating your own successful castings.

    do you use a release agent on the silicone?

  • @JonBurnsFineArt

    @JonBurnsFineArt

    Hi Zach. The short answer is no. I only use mold release with silicone when there is silica in the model (i.e. glass, ceramic, other silicone compounds, etc). Then I usually use a thin layer of Vaseline. Cheers

    That's correct. Just hydrostone and water. 3:1 respectively or 100 parts powder to 33 parts water. Have fun and wear gloves because it can seriously dry out your hands after a few batches, sometimes burns.

    Okay so I got into resin 3D printing a year ago. I got decent at printing and painting resin statues. Do you have any good mold making video content? I am talking content specific to casting statue pieces. Not full statues. Mainly because my stuff needs to survive shipping. I will install magnets and all that post process.

    Its all the same process. But I do have a molding video where I make up several molds in one sitting. There's another video that shows how to cut it where to cut the arms off for assembly later. Check my video play lists. There's only about 40 videos anyway. You'll find them

    Hello, really nice jobs and chanel, with a lots of explanations and knowledge sharing. I m wondering if you can recycle the product you use ? plaster, silicon etc... . Also, do you always need to make your creation in plaster? You can't glaze it and put in an hoven ? I m begining sculpture, so I m wondering

  • @JonBurnsFineArt

    @JonBurnsFineArt

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching my content. I hope it creates a more enjoyable sculpting experience. Unfortunately, plaster cannot be recycled for reuse, neither can silicone. I like plaster/hydrostone casts, but you can also cast resin/plastics in silicone molds. If you want to glaze your pieces and fire them in a kiln, you'll want to study slip cast molds made of pottery plaster. Good luck with your projects and take your time to learn your subject matter. It'll make all the difference. ☘️

    After curing can you wet sand and then polish hydrostone to achieve a higher gloss finish? Thank you.

  • @JonBurnsFineArt

    @JonBurnsFineArt

    I wouldn't try that on a good piece. I don't think that can be done without a acrylic finish or something like it.

  • @kenkarpowicz3455

    @kenkarpowicz3455

    @@JonBurnsFineArt I did try it. After a few days of curing time I used diamond abrasive pads I used diamond abrasive pads I use to clean and polish granite and marble. Starting with 50 grit and then progressing to 3000 I was able to achieve and semi-gloss finish over the entire surface. I was satisfied. This piece was a plinth/base for a wooden sculpture so it was a large cube with all flat surfaces. I doubt if I could do the same on a more sculptural piece. Thanks for answering my question.

    Can the pinholes be patched with additional hydrostone? Will it adhere?

  • @JonBurnsFineArt

    @JonBurnsFineArt

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi Judith! These pinholes were so small the paint went right over it no problem. Hydrostone on top of hydrostone I don't believe is the best answer. When it comes out if the mold there is a type of eggshell quality to the casting. You'll know what I mean if you've tried to clean up seam lines. Try using modeling paste. It glides over, easy to rub down with a Brillo pad before full cure and can be painted over. I show the product in the video link below. Best of luck! -Jon kzread.info/dash/bejne/lqBnw7ZmmZu1Xbg.html

  • @JonBurnsFineArt

    @JonBurnsFineArt

    Thanks Romain! I am using a typical hydrostone plaster from a ceramics supply store. Be aware this is much harder than traditional "pottery" plaster and tends to set very quickly when it kicks. This make lead to a very uneven coating inside. Be patient with your casting experience. I like to think about the inside of the mold while I'm rotating the slurry. I feel it helps me subconsciously rotate it more intuitively. Thanks for watching my videos ☺️👍

    With a Silicone lined plaster mold, can you use a vaccum? I'm studying to make wax molds for metal casting.

  • @JonBurnsFineArt

    @JonBurnsFineArt

    3 жыл бұрын

    I would not use a vacuum. I've made countless wax castings from silicone molds for bronzes. You want outward pressure from the inside of the mold. A vacuum would implode the interior. Not favorable. Not at all.
