Hey mate, i'm a Stonemason... next time you do a project like this try using a tungsten tipped chisel and a lump hammer. You were using a brick hammer. It distributes force in a different way. They should be used to strike the stone directly where as a lump hammer or mallet is used to strike a chisel into stone/wood. Tungsten tips are great and more precise for Granite and other harder stones, which i am certain this stone was Granite. As Marble is much softer... on the Mohs Scale (which determines how hard something is) Granite is 6/7, Marble is 3/4. Also be sure to chisel inwards from your edges as the stone could chip unfavorably... Either way your sink came out great, good job!

Maybe he could use a larger hole saw to cut the recess for the drain flange. Then, switch to the smaller saw to put the drain hole through using the same pilot hole. Just a thought. I've done similar projects and it HELPS to have a fan blowing that dust away as you cut and grind. Don't breathe it!!

What disks do you use to "grind"? For the initial smoothing after removing the bulk material. This is the most difficult part I find and there always seems to be one cut line that is too deep so you need to remove more material. Im thinking about setting up some kind of stand for my angle grinder where i can stop/control depth.

You need a what they call a wet grinder, they use them on counter tops or for our business we use them to polish large petrified logs and slabs but being it has water it makes a job like this go twice as fast with much better results. They are worth the money. You can get them on ebay with a set of diamond pads for under 200 bucks, dont get the concrete pads and bits you want ones for granite they are a much harder and longer lasting diamond pad. This way you dont need paste and have such a dusty mess.

It looks like a form of green marble based on what I see of the color and how you are cutting it. One way to find out for sure is to hit a bit of it with a hammer. If it shatters to fine particles it's marble. Or, drop a bit of it into swimming pool acid or muriatic acid. If it boils, it's for sure a calcium carbonate material which makes it green marble. Let me know.

Just take a small sample to your local gem and mineral society. Marble tends to be softer and more porous than granite. Where did you obtain your stone?

Getting tired of these so-called "how-to" videos where the person doesn't describe a single thing they do. Marble is a lot softer than granite. If you've ever cut one or the other you can probably tell fairly quickly cutting into this one what it is. To me it looks like granite.
