How to Calm Anxiety in 5 Seconds | Mel Robbins

Mel Robbins is an American podcast host, author, motivational speaker, and former lawyer - and someone you’d never think suffered from anxiety. But she has. Mel Robbins destigmatizes anxiety and teaches people how to handle theirs using her 5 Second Rule.
When it comes to controlling anxious thoughts, Robbins says the difficulty lies in a tricky chemical response. Since there’s no chemical difference between feeling excited and anxious, you have to trick your brain into thinking the worry is joy.
“You use [the rule] in combination with what we call an anchor thought… a thought that makes you happy. It’s a thought that will help you stabilize your brain.” she says.

She didn’t say excitement is similar to a panic attack. She said excitement is similar to anxiety. Then, the anxiety can turn into an attack. I hope this helps. ❤️

What she didn't explain is that the physiological symptom representation in your body is actually the same. Excitement is more a positive, pleasurable meaning we interpret in the context. There's a subconscious feeling of safety. Panic, you interpret in a way such that you feel fear, wanting to withdraw even if there are no visible reasons for you feeling this way. The negative language and interpretation during a panic attack is your brain being hypervigilant way to actually 'protect you'. I encourage you to find a therapist who communicates with you on a level that fully appreciate your experience and can tailor techniques uniquely to you. Whilst her technique can be effective in some contexts and some people, it is not necessarily for everyone. You are unique. Find what works for you. You absolutely deserve to. Wishing you great health and wellbeing. :)

I think she is wrong with this analogy - the difference about a speech or speaking up and a concert is that in the first examples there is a performance anxiety. All attention is on you and you are performing. That’s different to a concert

She appears sincere and may genuinely be sincere. She believes what she is sharing to have impact and effective. She found something that worked for her and has called it the 5 second rule which is great for memory retention. However, therapists have using this for many many years with clients. When we ourselves are open to believe someone or something is a solution for us, that can also be a placebo effect which all humans can take advantage of. Mel is also a professional public speaker. So, there are orchestrated theatrics, strong words, phrases, tonality and emphasis at play. It won't be 100% a 'performance' .

Oh my goodness👏🏿👏🏿🔥I Just had an epiphany at 16 minutes and 48 seconds wow it makes sense I’ve been battling since the month of May. In fact I actually started taking my driver’s licence, in 2009, when I was supposed to work in prison. I was very unconcentrated and garrulous and had nobody to practice drive with. I have the sweetest boyfriend who has sacrificed so much and has help me for the past 2 years. I’ve been working so hard and I’ve already had one test drive, that was not successful. But now you have given me the words :”I trust myself ,I am the kind of person who trust myaelf to drive safely and skillfully in the snowy slopes and streets of Oslo, Norway my new hometown. Thank you, thank you, thank you so much for this will be new my affirmation: “I trust myself I trust myself to drive safely and skillfully”

If Mel's theory is correct that by counting 5,4,3,2,1 will fix the anxiety problem that 30% of the world have, she should be awarded a Nobel Peace Prize! Out of the 6.5 billion people in the world, how many have tried it and how many no longer have anxiety?

  • @IngridMClark

Emotions initiate from the right brain. When I'm anxious and count 5, 4, 3, 2, 1..we switch to the logical left brain. In NLP it's called a pattern interrupt. Also, we know about the PLACEBO effect; an anxious person could take a sugar pill and calm down. Dr. Joe Dispenza's 'You are the Placebo' illustrates that. One can also pat the top of one's head to influence one's meridians to release anxiety.

Such a vital comment on women not truly having confidence in themselves and how this affects their career trajectory. It also affects how they view the world and their place in it. No matter how loud you are you are your confidence may be lacking. Keeping hidden and quiet may also only indicate a lack of COURAGE that a loud person has in bucket-loads which may well be overcompensating a lack of confidence. The word ‘Strategic’ however, is most definitely NOT stupid - it is strategies that create the success in the company. That is why success follows if you use stratification thinking - and just using the word will get you attention BUT you have to follow through. Explaining and reasoning don’t cut it. See Jordan Peterson.

Just thought id reply to your message for anyone else who reads or for you if you are still struggling with this. Stop struggling, hurting yourself and wasting mental and emotional energy on it, accept what happened, its already done, You still feel anxiety about it because the mind is software that is trying to understand the issue so it doesnt happen again, either something in your present is triggering this anxiety that relates to the past situation or your mind is just a broken record about the past pain. Sometimes there is no understanding why something happened. We can become addicted to the drama of the mind, watch this video again and stop living in the past

I mean that's a literal way to interpret it but anxiety is always something psychological. Triggers aren't inside your head but the response is. We don't have control over those triggers but we can control our thoughts...it just takes SO. MUCH. WORK. I know what you mean though. The physiological/physical symptoms aren't comfortable.
