How To Calibrate Digital Pocket Scales WITHOUT a Calibration Weight

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video shows you how to calibrate a set of digital scales without a weight by using coins.
Scales still totally busted?
New 200g x 0.01g Scales with Calibration Weight INCLUDED Only $9.99 - amzn.to/42TTmQf
Just use 14 x 2p coins (United Kingdom) or 20 x nickles (USA) to replace a 100g calibration weight.
**USA 20 x nickles (5 cent coins) = 100g**
**UK 14 x 2p coins (2 pence coins) = 100g**
14 x 2p coins = 99.5g
(This is not exactly 100g but will work in emergencies. The difference will only be 0.005g per gram which is nothing really)
The calibration process is very similar to the one show in the video for most scales however just search for the manual online for the correct procedure & the calibration weight needed.
Usually the scale will display the required weight during the calibration process (As shown in the video)
1. Turn Scale On
2. Press and hold CAL button or MODE/UNIT button until CAL or weight needed is displayed (You may need to release & press it again as in video)
3. Place weight on scale. The scale should show PASS or F (You may need to press CAL/MODE button again)
4. Remove weight. ( You may need to turn scale off)
5. Finish!
If you need a larger weight just multiply the number of coins
7 x 2p = 50g
14 x 2p = 100g
28 x 2p = 200g
etc..........

    Oy mate, I so did agree with you back then before dispensaries and shit got legal, (for some things 😉) but it’s just not even worth going to the dispensary if you thought it was bad back then when we were chumped here & there by a local dealer. Dispensaries are the “NEW DEALERS ON THE BLOCK” and they want ALL your $$$. Ain’t no medical insurance nor any kind of type that exists, nor medication funding for any assistance whatsoever, especially for those cancer patients out there. Who I’m most certain probably are needing it more than any other of us, it’s just too bad that they’re willing to recognize it as a medicine, but treat it otherwise by keeping it out of the hands of the people who need it most. Maybe going back to the “OL” SKOOL DEALER” ain’t so bad their prices are better too!!

    In the states If you dont have a 50g calibration weight you can test by first weighing several nickels, most weigh exactly 5g so if your scale reflects this you know your good but heres how to make an accurate 50g weight to use if you need to calibrate later. Get a bunch of nickels occasionally you will encounter one that will weigh less than 5g. You can either use ten 5g nickels or use one of the lighter ones so that you may wrap with enough tape to reach the 50g point then you have a good one piece calibration weight.

    I've been telling my friends to forget the Calibration weights... Use pocket change!! Hold up... Just hold up a quick second. Now this method totally works! However, at least in America, the coins can be pitted, chipped, etc. And THAT can make the weight wrong. Just FYI... It's always better to use the newest possible coins for more accurate weight!

    Ice may float in a drink because its density is lower than water's but that's not because it has any less mass; its mass is merely spread over a larger area. 1 mL/CC of liquid water will still weigh 1g upon freezing, even if it will occupy >1cm³ (cubic centimeter being the origin of CC). With that in mind you can make an ice cube out of a 3 CCs of water and it will weigh 3g. I've used this method then checked with a 5g calibration weight to verify and it's been accurate.

    the issue with that is if the balance is off calibration already you're going to de-calibrate it anyway. The only way to really calibrate it is to have some fixed reference like say a gold coin that you had already measured with the same scale before it got de-calibrated..... How do I know this? because I messed up and accidentally saw the "PASS" mark on my scale by pressing the wrong button(s). At first I did that method of measuring 300g, entering calibration mode and getting it to "re-calibrate", thinking "wow that was smart!". A few days later I wen to measure something that I knew roughly the weight off and saw that it had dropped a few %, not thinking to much about it I just accepted it... a few days later again measuring something that I thought I knew the weight off and sure enough a few % off. That lead me to realize... hold on that's not right! The ONLY way to calibrate to almost good enough, is by using a known "fix" weight... if you don't have a calibration weight but have a known fixed weight (can be any weight) that was measured by the same scale some time ago you can get close to perfect again. I used one of my gold coin that I had measured and cataloged. it was supposed to be 31.31g but came in as 29.57 🤦‍♂🤦‍♂🤦‍♂ I felt so dumb. Only then can you start using water in a cup to calibrate it, with Excel I threw in the numbers: A1=29.57 A2=1-A1/31.31 A3=300-(300*A2) That told me that I had to weigh 283.328g of water on the de-calibrated scale, enter calibration, set it to 300 and voila!... ish I did that 5-7 times with the same "known" weight, slowly creeping my way up/down going from -5% off, 1% over, -0.5% off, +0.1%, all the way down to -0.0411%... at that point I used another cataloged "fixed" weight. I measured it to be 48.63g, catalog weight 48.61g on a scale with 500g+-0.01g scale. intentionally used 300g instead of 100g or 500g to because you can't measure anything heavier then 500g, and it's easier to control 300g+-5% compared to calibrating with the other options: 6.01g, 6.5g,10g,50g,100g,300g,500g (don't ask me about the 6.01 and 6.5 options I don't know). Btw a good way to control the weight of water down to 0.01g you can use a emty pen as a pipet to fill it drop by drop (0.1-0.5g), and use a tissue to soak up 0.01-0.1g at a time!

    How does this work since no amount of 2p coins weighs exactly 100g?

  • @svampebob007

    @svampebob007

    Жыл бұрын

    it doesn't, it's not accurate enough. Say coins vary by -0.8% to +0.8% (I weighed 10 coins that were supposed to be 4.45g, average deviation was 0.8%) Throwing that into excel if you use the "supposed weight of 7.12 adding a deviation of +-0.8%, with 100 coins you could end up with as much as -+2.42% error or using 102.16/97.26g instead of 99.68g (and that's with the "supposed weight still being 0.32% off). The only way this can work is if you already had measured ONE coin before the scale was de-calibrated. Then you can do what I did: Measure the coin on the de-calibrated scale, note the supposed weight and use excel again :) By comparing the supposed weight to the new weight you can use that to offset the "calibration" weight like a cup of water. This is how it works (back story I pressed the wrong buttons and de-calibrated my scale): I had one gold coin that I knew was supposed to be 31.31g, I measured it on the scale, it came off as 29.53g. 1-29.53/31.31=0.056 (meaning my scale was -5.6% off 🤦‍♂) Sooo 300g on the scale would actually show as 282.944g... In theory if I measure up 282.944g of water in a cup (including the weight of the cup) and Re-calibrated the scale at 300g it would cancel out and be accurate! 🥳 If you do that 5-10 times you can get back to 0.01% accuracy (in my case I stopped at -0.04% because this scale is kinda noying and likes to jump +-0.03 at random times). I went from -5.6%, to 1%, -0.5%, 0.1%,-0.04... for example measuring up 282g of water... 300.67g...299.95g...300.04g, making sure to calibrating to "300g" every time and comparing the the known coin to what it should be. I used another known object that I knew was supposed to be 48.61g and it came inn as 48.63g, before the calibration it came off as 45.9g... good enough for me! 😄 it only took me 10 minutes using a jug of water, a cup, an empty pen acting as a pipet to deliver 0.1-0.5g of water and some tissue to soak up 0.01g -0.1g of water. The genius of this is that as long as you have a known reference you can get pretty damn close to the perfect calibration, in relatively short amount of time. I'm still going to get it calibrated by a store, but now I don't have to feel so stupid for messing up my scale 😂

    this is NOT calibration of anything. coins are minted to be an approx size and weight but really have no "tolerance" take that inaccuracy and multiply it times four or five. simply changing the coin configuration until you get a pass is not doing anything. "Calibration is a comparison between measurements - one of known magnitude or correctness"

    My scales won't let me set a 'tare weight' for calibration. I set the container on the scale, make note of the weight, then add measured water from a hypodermic needle, as the calibration weight. 1cc = 1 gram. Yes, you can argue the point of water temp and volume/mass, but apparently we're not talking about scientific laboratory work here. If they were that scientifically inclined, they would have certified calibration weights to check the calibration of the scale readings. As you said, coins aren't a valid weight to certify calibration on a scale. They lose mass over time and use, when you're talking about milligrams. Even newly minted coins aren't perfect, but close enough to work in vending machines. Nice reply, sir!

    @@yahoomail4908 - In theory, yes, but it's not an *exact* weight that one can rely on for calibrating a *precision* scale. Circulated coins tend to lose weight over time as bits of metal come off from rubbing against things and banging into other coins. So even though 14 British 2-pence coins will typically weigh *about* 100g, that doesn't mean that this is a precise weight that one can rely on to calibrate a precision scale!

    Coins differ in weight, typically each by a few hundredths of a gram. I've noticed this with nickels, which is what we use in the US, as they weigh 5 grams each. If you're calibrating a scale which can measure a centigram or more, this method is not reliable.

  • @Wyriel

    @Wyriel

    The advantage of using multiple coins is that the errors average out with high probability. If coins are machined to errors within centigrams, using 10+ coins to calibrate a centigram scale ought to be fine.

  • @Bike_Lion

    @Bike_Lion

    @@Wyriel - The problem is though that it's not simply a matter of slight variance, which would tend to cancel itself out with multiple coins, but rather that circulated coins consistently lose weight over time. As people touch coins, as they bang against other coins, and as the rub against various surfaces, small amounts of metal are slowly filed off, to the point where older circulated coins are often quite visibly worn down.

    Apparently nickels before a certain year possibly 1990 are more accurate and consistent in weight. US has gotten sloppy. I knew that was true with pennies because they are only copper plated now but I didnt know that was true with nickels. Ghetto
