Dear impers, I made this video to show how I calibrated my detecto scale.

As some have mentioned the gentlemen in the vid is zero/balancing the beam. Usually you don't have to calibrate these type but if you do there is (on certain models, not all) a bolt at the head of the base that connects to the transfer lever on the base. Zero the scale and then put a known (preferably certified) weight on the scale equal to the max capacity of the beam. If the beam indicates a reading lighter than the weight on the platform you will have to take the weight off the platform and run the bolt in making it shorter, rezero/balance the beam and retest, this may take a few times to get it right, if the beam indicates a heavier reading you need to lengthen the bolt by turning it out. Don't add or take lead away from the sliding poise weights on the beam as these are set at the factory and are usually not a problem unless someone opens them up and looses some lead out of them. Usually when one of these is off it's pivot/bearing problem in the base, that base platform should float like a ship on the ocean so to speak, if it's rocking up and down on one corner than you've probably got a pivot that's came out of a bearing.

Thanks for the vid.It went perfectly after I watched it. That hook was killing me before I watched your show..lol.I was finished in 15 min..zeroed the scale as well

djones8306 Thank You for explaining the difference between calibrating the scale via the poise and zeroing/balancing the scale via the bar end weight. Very helpful.

The hook it the peice that connects the base with the top of the scale..Just so folks know

They come with a wrench which can be used to turn the balancer..

The procedure you show is for zeroing the balance, not calibration. The poise (the part that slides along the bar) has small lead weights in it. You need to zero the scale as you show in the video, then put a known weight on the scale. If the scale is off you can unscrew the poise covers and add/remove weight as needed. You need to do this for each poise and then both...can be time consuming to get it correct.

As others have said, zeroing and calibrating are different things. I'm trying to calibrate a detecto platform scale right now which is why I'm here. It's a mechanical scale so there are no weights to add or remove. We'll see what happens, the jury is still out. The scale is very old and worked FAIRLY accurately until recently.

Or you open up a phone book and call a Scale technician. I runs a scale company and trust me medical scales are wrong 9 out of 10 times. Due to medical profesionals atempting to calibrate thier own scales patients run the risk of not being administered proper medication doses, That is why there are tolerances. You described how to zero a scale but there is a lot more to it that adjusting that screwy thingy, I will eave the patient care to you why dont you leave the scales to us.

Thanks for the info. I want to buy one of these scales but I was concerned that it would go out of calibration during shipping. Going to check priceon overstock.com.

There's no reason one of these scales should ever have to be "calibrated" after they leave the factory. They work like a see saw. Unless the poise are somehow altered or the scale is damaged in some way, it should be as accurate as when it left the factory.

I have to disagree with you I have been calibrating scales for 30+ years and all scales lose calibration. as parts wear like pivots and bearings they lose calibration.

Never set these mechanical scales on carpet or squishy floors... any lateral movement affects values that you see...
