Beams are the horizontal members of a structure which are provided to resist the vertical loads acting on the structure. So in order to maintain the efficiency of a structure, it is necessary to provide the proper size of a beam to resist a given set of loads. The size of a beam i.e., Depth & Width depends on the length available for casting the beam.
For calculating the depth of a beam using the thumb rule, we use the formula;
Depth of Beam = L/10 to L/12
Where L = Clear span of the beam.
By the term ‘’clear span’’ we mean the column inner to inner distance.

Buildings have braced with different beams starting from grade beam upto roor beam. So,is the tumb tule has functional for varius beam .

1st I love this video and thank you. I hope you can help though. I am building a pavilion 24’ x 14’ (7.312m x 4.267m). I am trying to calculate use of 3 clear span Tie Beams. Each Tie Beam is 14’L x 8”D x 4”W (4.267m L x .2032m D x .1016m W). These Tie beams will support an upper roof load by means of king post located located at mid point of each clear span. The 3 King post on supports 1 ridge beam 24’ L x 8”D x 5”W ( 7.312m L x .2032m D x .127m. All Tie Beans are supported by 8” x 8” (.2032m x .2032m timber post. The Tie Beam are solid Southern Pine Timbers Additionally each Tie beam is reinforced with mortise and tenon joints Knee braces at 18” (.762m) vertically and Horizontally from intersecting Post and Tie beam. (No other wall support). Calculation do not seem to pass by IS13950. But I have seen this structure and it seems safe. Can you help? Moment of inertia and bending stress formulas are confusing me. Thank you in advance

How to calculate stair mid landing beam depth
For g+1 storey building column size 10*12 steel bar 6-12mm steel at corner column 4-16mm & 2-12mm at side middle column, 6- 16mm & 2-12mm at middle column. Total column 12. Grade beam size 10*12 with 4-16mm & 2-12mm steel bar. Is it strong enough for this residential building?

At 1:40 min, you meant to say the "minimum width" should not be less than 200mm, not "minimum depth".
If 1cum concrete take cement 350kg Then how many kgs steel required for 1cum... Regular building

I got a little confused there...you mean the width from above the beam?.... Clear Span seem like width but it's span...so width of the beam is the top of it right?...
