How to BYPASS CLACK WS1 Water Softener?

Did you know that just about every water softener has a bypass built in? But ….. What is it used for? Where is it? How does it work? When should you bypass your water softener? Does it require any maintenance? Do tannin filters or iron filters also have bypasses? I’m going to explain it all to you right now!
Hi I’m Gary the Water Guy and I simplify water filtration to help you conquer crappy water for your family!
Whether you’re a do it yourself home owner, plumber or water filtration specialist, this video is for you!! Our HUM water filtration equipment all feature Clack WS1 valves and they all have bypass valves. When you turn the valve handles so they point toward each other the valve is in bypass, which means none of your families water will pass through the water softener. I definitely suggest watching this video to the end because I’ve got a great tip to make sure your water softener bypass doesn’t leak!
Shop Clack Water Softener here waterestore.ca/search?type=pr...
When would you need to put your water filtration equipment into bypass?.
1) if you need hard or untreated water at a faucet where normally you have softened water, like filling a hot tub, swimming pool or heavy watering a new lawn.
2) water softener suddenly starts leaking, every home owner needs to know how to bypass their water softener to stop the leak and still have water for their family.
3) troubleshooting some aspect of your water softener you may need to use the bypass valve.
4) When shocking your well.
The bypass valve is typically used to isolate the valve from the plumbing system’s water pressure in order to perform control valve repairs or maintenance. The 1” full flow bypass valve incorporates four positions, including a diagnostic position that allows service personal to work on a pressurized system while still providing untreated bypass water to the facility or residence.
With the Clack WS1 Valve we use on all of our HUM Water filtration products, including water softeners, iron & sulphur filters, tannin filters and automaall seals are self-lubricating EPDM to help prevent valve seizing after long periods of non-use. The bypass consists of two interchangeable plug valves that are operated independently by red arrow-shaped handles. The handles identify the flow direction of the water. The valves enable the bypass valve to operate in four positions.
1. Normal Operation Position: The inlet and outlet handles point in the direction of flow indicated by the engraved arrows on the control valve. Water flows through the control valve during normal operation and this position also allows the control valve to isolate the media bed during the regeneration cycle.
2. Bypass Position: The inlet and outlet handles point to the center of the bypass, the control valve is isolated from the water pressure contained in the plumbing system. Untreated water is supplied to the plumbing system.
3. Diagnostic Position: The inlet handle points in the direction of flow and the outlet handle points to the center of bypass valve, system water pressure is allowed to the control valve and the plumbing system while not allowing water to exit from the control valve to the plumbing.
4. Shut Off Position: The inlet handle points to the center of the bypass valve and the outlet handle points in the direction of flow, the water is shut off to the plumbing system . If water is available on the outlet side of the softener it is an indication of water bypass around the system
How do you maintain your water softener bypass? I definitely suggest exercising the bypass valve once a year to make sure this very important safety device is ready to use whenever you need it and when you do use it, it won’t leak.

You had your bypass system turned around the opposite way, so initially what you were saying was an inlet was actually the exit 👌

Last August I got my first water softener, the exact same one you use in your videos. You have no idea how much your videos have helped me. I never thought about the affect treated water would have on my garden until a garden centre alerted me to the fact that softened water can be dangerous to some plants due to the salt, I was advised to simply turn if off when watering my vegetable garden. I had no a clue how to do it but learned of the bypass option from one your videos. This morning I could not figure out why the softening indicator was not coming on. This video in particular made me realize that I forgot to turn off the bypass! In another, I learned how to do an unscheduled regen. Thank you very much!!

Great videos, Gary! Very clean and concise. Thank you. If I switch the valve to bypass mode a water softener with an analog clock timer, do I need to make any adjustments to the timer? What happens if the water is bypassing the softener when the timer triggers regeneration?

Glad it helped. The water softener valve will still go through all of the cycles but since there is no water flow nothing will happen inside the tank.

I just wanted to say thank you for your help. I was able to get the fill line to stop leaking with some Teflon tape. I would prefer a more permanent repair. I believe I saw in one of your videos were you had an upgraded fill line with a brass fitting.? Question. I have a well and I use a UV light filter for my water I’m wondering if I should upgrade to a better filter? And if you could post a cheat sheet for the maintenance on a water softener for a well system. I know there’s a lot of information on maintenance but just a cheat sheet for additives that certain time of year would be tiptop. Thanks again for your service.

Hello, love your videos and as a new home owner ive learned a ton from your videos and i thank you so much for that. Question though, i manually turned the bypass mode on to do some servicing and ever since then when the system goes into regen it doesnt automatically go into bypass mode. Is there something i messed up or something i can check for proper operation? Thank you for any and all help

It bypasses the system internally during regeneration. You will not see it move the external bypass that you use

Once the water softener has been bypassed how do you uninstall/disconnect the water softener from your home? Our city opened a water treatment plant and we do not need the water softener anymore.

  • @GarytheWaterGuy

Just because they opened a water treatment plan does not mean the water is soft. Try bypassing your water softener for a few months before you get rid of it.

@@JKjrbad Sorry I wasn't clear. You need to plumb in a water line between the hard and soft water with a a shut off valve between them. Then, open up the the shut off valve slightly until the water becomes as less soft as you like it. You will be mixing hard water with the softened water.
