Great video! I just purchased a lovingly restored 1944 J-3 last month. It’s the first airplane I’ve owned outright and it’s been my dream to own a J-3 since I was a kid…I’m still in disbelief when I get to the hangar and open the door to see what’s inside…No better flying than low and slow with the door open on a nice day!

If the Fed's new how much fun a cub is they would make them illegal. I've given cub rides to people from 5yrs to 75 years . The old saying is a cub is the safest airplane ever built, you can just barely kill yourself with her. Always treat her with respect.

I used to fly a 65hp clipped wing cub with wood spars. That plane taught me more about flying in 100hrs then a 172 would in 1000.

nice presentation, very informative. I grew up flying in these kinds of planes, my dad took me up at the age of four, later I soloed at 16 in a Piper Colt in 1962. Never progressed to anything larger. It's what flying is all about for me.

I am an A@ P, ATP and instructor. I received my whole license in a J3, owned one along with many other aircraft over the years. My heart is with the J3 Your presentation is excellent.

First aircraft I had a ride in back in the early forties . Got my PL in a cub. Now have over 2000 hrs in various aircraft.

Great plane; my Cub is almost identical. Not a show plane but robust and fun!! I’m lucky to hangar it an an airport with two grass (one official, the other not) and one paved strips. I use the grass almost exclusively. It’s a mere 30 mins from me and the hangar is $170/mo. I’ve found several grass strips within reasonable distance (~ :45) I visit. Can’t beat this kind of flying!

Loved the engine start at the opening of the video. I forgot how that sound always made me smile. I did ultimately put Grove disc brakes on mine. It had an 85 hp engine and it got to the point I could barely hold the plane in place during run up with the old brakes. Never felt like I was going to put it on it's nose.

You put it so well. It's about the experience of the flying itself - Not about getting there. Loved the scary take-off by your ferry pilot lol Great video thankyou!

In 1938 l was six Andy Bleu a pilot in WW 1 was a family friend we visited his airport one day he took me for a ride in his new (40 hours) J-3 what a thrill I am 90 now still relish the memory of that day in 1954 l soloed in a J-3

It is a shame the PA-22/24 series never got the respect, they were better than the 172's in many ways. Keep her flying!!!!

WOW!!!!! At 16:36-17:20 I don’t see how in the world that guy didn’t take the prop off that Cub. You can clearly tell he had never flown a J-3 before by how high he was raising the tail. That’s why she didn’t lift right off the ground. Nice overall video. My January of 1946 J-3 has been in my family for 54 years. My late Grandfather bought it in 1968. Re recovered and painted it in 1974-75 and then I brought it home in March of 2017 for a 100% ground up restoration. If you haven’t seen my KZread before check it out. I got about 40+ Cub videos on there. 😯 Wow!! I can’t believe your fabric has been on your Cub since the 60’s. Have you ever had a punch test done in top of your wings or tail feathers? That’s about unheard of. Anyways nice video!! 😁👌🏼

Thanks , I will go look at some of your videos. I am glad you are keeping your grandfather's plane alive. Didn't you hear, ceconite is supposed to last a lifetime.? I punch test it at every annual, so far so good. The wings are getting close to needing cover, and she needs paint so in the next few years she will probably get dealt with.

The first plane I flew in the early fifties...My brother was a certified instructor and owned a crop dusting outfit during his flying career...

Excellent video. I would like to know what you think is the best way to clean the fabric. My airplane has aluminum wings cowling and bottom but fabric fuselage tail and rudder.

I use Lemon Pledge, go to you tube and look for Joe Costanza, he ha s cub page with great videos, including a recent one about how he cleans his Cub, with great detail.

Two airplanes is good, but at least it is easy to rent airplane to get somewhere relatively fast , low and slow like these are hard to find in the rental market.

Only about 150 miles on a tank, I would think you would want more horsepower to be a bush plane.

I agree. I'm in a flying club with a Piper Cub and it's a great plane to own and learn in. It doesn't get much cheaper.

Wood prop, composite prop, any prop strike and it's a "prop strike tear down". Ya can't just replace the prop...... and your ferry pilot almost cost you your first one!

I think he went by Ani and flys for Atlas now. I got him through Full Throttle Aviation. Best of luck to you.

Here’s a present for you. A gas is 6 lbs per gallon not 6.5. You just gained 6 pounds of useful load.

Yep, I was taught it was "about" , as in more than 6, less than 6.5, I guess I can carry slightly fatter passengers now, thanks for watching.!

@@J3PiperCub 6.02 but the FAA allowed 6 even when doing weight and balance in the Cessna twins I flew on charter. The new unleaded fuel is supposed to be heavier and have less energy density
