Check behind all of the plastics. Shiny, crack, and scratch free plastics on an older bike may be hiding damage from a drop or slide. If parts were replaced, ask why they were (accident, upgrade, etc), and do the original parts come with the bike. (Having spares is always a good thing.)

Always check for Clean Title in the owners name and the bike is completely paid off with no remaining liens, make sure the VIN# matches the engraving on the bike, check KBB for the average value (don’t be afraid to negotiate!), Age of the Tires (the manufacturer date is printed on the sidewall), if it’s chain driven check for rust & tension, open up that gas tank and check for rust (a responsible owner will keep a full tank with fuel stabilizer), test ride and test braking & suspension, headlight/Turn Signals/Horn, check the front forks for any leaks… Oh and definitely educate yourself with the bike you’re interested in, knowledge is key my friends 🏍🤓✌️

I suggest saving for a bike in the summer and fall and buying in the fall or winter when used bike prices are the lowest. Spend the rest of the winter catching up on maintenance (when motorcycle tire prices are lowest) and adding the accessory equipment you want, which also helps with the angst of having a new bike you can't ride in the winter.

I generally avoid bikes (and cars) which have a lot of performance modifications. This stuff might be desirable to some but can lead to real headaches and expensive repair bills down the road. You can rarely be sure the modifications have been done correctly and that the bike isn't a ticking bomb as a result.

  • @KhakThui

I've bought 5 2ndhand bikes so far, so for beginners like me, always go for the bike that has no to minimal amounts of modifications, be it visual or performance. Even if they are good mods, they will almost never suit your taste in the long run anyway.

100% agree with "owners who seem to forget they're selling something" - if you repeatedly take >1 day to respond to msgs (or I have to ping you to remind you) and you only answer a few of my questions, then experience has taught me you're probably not all that pressed to sell and you probably won't be pleasant/easy to negotiate with. Young me would have stubbornly kept pursuing, but life is short and there are plenty of other fish

The number one thing you should do when buying used bikes, cars, boats etc..............before you consider anything.........check how easy it is to get parts for that particular model, were there a lot of them produced, how much do key parts cost? Beware of vehicles that were abandoned cause they cost too much to fix. I gave up riding road bikes years ago, people tail gate too much, I was the middle vehicle in a 7 car pileup on the highway, my bike got turned into a pancake, I jumped and walked away without a scratch.

Read up on the "consumables" and replacement parts possibilities to understand the potential service bills (even if you do your own wrenching) in the foreseeable future... ESPECIALLY TIRES... That list includes things like gaskets, seals, o-rings, and the brake lines at this point... It's not a guaranteed replacement list, mind you... JUST that "sitting to death" can be a thing, depending on how the bike was routinely stored... SO it's worth knowing what might've been 'broke down" by the elements of just sitting quietly, and while they may hold up for a while, that's a vague and indiscriminate amount of time before you're on the hook for the adjustments and replacements... For perspective, I bought a 95 Suzuki Savage 650, with 3850-ish actual miles on it. I had a FULL history of the bike with confidence... AND I've treated her as much like a trail bike as the cruiser she is for thousands of miles now... Other than the initial carburetor clean out (shellacking sucks for engine operation)... I have no complaints... LOVE it! Hope this helps, as some of those "consumables" might be worthy of mention in price negotiation so you could even get a break... ;o)

hey Yams can you do a video on "first bikes over 50" so as to satisfy the Dad Squids out there who haven't touched a bike a bicycle or tool in over a decade and now want a.....(deep breath) "chopped up, stretched out, raked up, widened and piped and ported Vfax Night Rain Boulevland" so they can show up at the local AppleFridayGarden wearing dad jeans, white sneakers and and untucked button down shirts to hit on the Ultra Blond bartender who thinks they are human garbage. extra points if you can include riding with said Dad Squid I'm too tall too big too old for that bike over to AppleFridayGarden and getting reaction for the Ultra Blond.
