How to Buy a Used Camera - Tips and Tricks!

Ғылым және технология

Buying used camera gear can save money but you should be diligent to ensure a quality product is offered. I prefer new but have purchased used equipment over the years and assembled a list tips and tricks which might be of help to you. I started with a simple list which grew as I put my thoughts to paper:). I have many thoughts on this topic and did my best to stay on point. Hopefully, this will be of some help if you decide to buy used!:)

    Nice video, you can add this points to check : 1) the flash if the camera has a pop up one 2) the hotshoe pins 3) the screen : touch , tilt ... 4) Wireless connection : wifi, Nfc , bluetooth ... 5) Using the serial number of the camera to check if it has been repaired or reported as stolen. also it may be helpful to check the screws to be sure that the camera wasn't opened before.

    Thanks, I've been wanting something like this. I used to resell manual-focus film cams on Ebay, and the inspection for those lenses and cams was much more straightforward, so all this is very good to know. Even though I've got about all the stuff I need now (and then some), I may need something in the future, and your vid will come in handy.

    Awesome video, as usual, and awesome advice. I have bought a lot of used camera equipment online, in the past. All of it has been from reputable businesses, and sometimes on Ebay. I have been blessed that all were great deals, and the equipment worked flawlessly. I always buy quality equipment, which is always best, and I look for USA registered items only. The advice that you've given will be invaluable for many in the market, either as buyers or sellers.

    Thank you for this useful video! As usual also very enjoyable. I have bought some used gear that I could not afford new, I've been lucky because all turn fine. I would add to investigate the specs of the items before the inspection, some youtube reviews would be good too, specially if you are not familiar with the specifics (for example I bought a manual fish eye lens, never used one of those before, I investigate previous the purchase how to use it with my camera so I could test it). I agree with you to be conservative with the price push and be respectful as well, the price should be agreed before hand according the objective condition of the product, if you don't like the condition of the item or the seller lies about it, I woun't purchase, instead of getting lower price. Greetings from Chile!

    Great video. Especially good for those perhaps looking for an entry-level DSLR. Lots of reasons to buy used (I buy new and used). I would rather have a used D7100 (body only)with low shutter count & excellent condition etc for about $400 (orig $950.) than a new D3400 (body only)for $400.00. I’m personally not a Craigslist fan for camera equipment and prefer places that offer some protections and can check seller history etc.

    Thanks for your video. Let me advice 1 camera to start between d3400 or T7i. I mainly take pictures and few videos. Time to use my camera is also very small, about 1 time a week on Sunday. Does the net score between d3400 (11) and T7i (45) affect much? What about image quality between 2 types? Sorry if my english is not good.

  • @RealWorld

    @RealWorld

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the post:). I might lean towards the T7i if given the choice. The T7i has more focal points (45 vs 11 - this can be helpful when shooting video), built-in time lapse, and fully rotating touch screen. If you can get the D3400 cheaper and do not care for the rotating screen and are focused on image quality, I might lean towards the D3400.

    Thank you for this video. Very informative and timely for me. I was looking at a second hand Canon D7 at a pawnshop priced at $475. The body is pretty scratched. Looks like it has been pretty used up. Although I have a Leica D-LUX (Typ 109), I am looking for a DLSR to learn to take better pictures and to make better videos. In buying from a pawnshop,what are my risks? Best case/worst case scenario? What is your advice? Thank you.

  • @RealWorld

    @RealWorld

    6 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for the post/feedback!:) The challenge with any pawn shop is lack of history - since you are not able to speak with the owner, you have not idea of how the camera was treated, if there was only one owner, etc. If the camera body is scratch fairly good, I may second guess the purchase. A banged-up body tells me the camera had to take a fall or two or three or four:). For the money, I would seriously consider a new D3400 unless you have older Canon gear, etc. The D3400 runs $500 and includes two kit lenses. I created a review video on the D3400 and have used it a bunch of the last year - a solid, good bang-for-your-money camera in my opinion:).

    Thank you very much! I looked it up in Amazon and shudder at the huge mistake I have averted! I compared the price and features of Nikon D3400 and Canon T6. To my untrained untechnical eye/mind, they look interchangeable. Is that so? My children also own a Canon DSLR but I do not know what kind since they treat their camera as too precious, not to be checked by their mother. The reason I brought this up is because I am wondering if it is ethical for people to borrow each other's lense. Sorry too much question. Thank you for your patience.

  • @RealWorld

    @RealWorld

    6 жыл бұрын

    Glad to be of help!:) If having to choose between the D3400 and T6, I would lean towards the D3400 for the few reasons: 1) higher resolutions (24mp vs 18) 2) higher max ISO (25600 vs 6400) 3) much better battery life (1200 shots vs 500 shots). One more note - Nikon removed the AA filter which is a nice bonus (the AA filter is the anti-aliasing or low-pass filter which tends to inadvertently sharpen images to some extent). They both will take nice photos/video in my opinion and I do not think you would go wrong either way.

    2 years ago I send you a message being proud of my Nikon d3400 :) I barely knew to use it. I watched your videos and I had a lot to learn. In the meantime I had to change the device after some functions, taking a D5600, but the lenses were multiplying and now i have a Nikon D7500 because I needed fine focus auto tune, to have all my lenses calibrated :D I think you can make a video about this setting :D Devices that they don't have this in menu setting can be adjusted from the bottom screw. I wish you good luck and to be very successful. Greetings from Romania 🇲🇩👍🍻

    Hello, I have just purchased my very 1st camera a Canon EOS 80D. I have watched numerous videos (yours as well) about which one would best suit my needs and it was between the Nikon 5600, 7200, and the Canon. I wanted a camera I could grow with and I plan on having this for quite a while and not upgrading (only the lenses). The reason I chose the Canon was ultimately went to the store and I just really liked the feel of the Canon, I remember you saying that they are all pretty much the same and won't be able to tell the difference (as I am by no means a professional or want to be, just a hobby) so when it come down to it, go and test them out (great advice as I was leaning toward the Nikon 7200, but didn't like the menu or the grip and overall hold). Would you recommend buying used lenses from Canon (refurbished) department, and if so what lenses would your recommend for landscape photos/wide angle (10-18mm Canon) as I will be going to Europe and need photos from far away and up close/indoors possibly? I have the 80D with the 18-135mm kit. Great videos and have subscribed, keep up the great work!

    I've got that Nikkon D200 dslr I mentioned earlier and I've used it. Buttons etc seem in good condition. Sensor looks clean with no dust. Body looks and feels good condition. Lens is alright and back screen and screen on top looks good condition with only small marking that you don't really notice. The price is cheap as it was £100 for second hand in shop. How to focus at night as it doesn't have live view as I like to try photographing the stars and constellations with this camera?

    Interesting video because I was recently at a pawn used shop and saw a DSLR which looked good the Nikkon D200 at a very cheap price of £100 so I asked to use camera and everything looked real good so I paid deposit. Is this camera any good under low light? Is this camera almost a pro camera? What lenses should I buy? When I get it I'll take a closer look at camera with help from this video from you. Is this camera better than the Canon 700D?

    Thanks for the post!:) I would be curious to know the shutter count. Nonetheless, the camera was manufactured in 2006 and might be good from a historic perspective but not certain I would use it much today (just my two cents). How does it compare to the 700D? The 200D was built to be more hefty/solid but that's about it. The 700D has a higher max ISO, articulating touch screen, resolution, etc. If it were me, I might pass on this camera unless it were immaculate and/or I simply wanted a piece of history, etc. ... again, just my two cents:).

    Thanks for the video! Regarding taking some test photos with high and low shutter speeds, I've read online second hand buying guides that say to change the aperture to f/22. Is there much of a difference between using aperture or shutter speed when it comes to taking the test photos? I guess not right? Because ultimately you just want an underexposed and overexposed photo?

  • @RealWorld

    thanks for the post/question Mike:). the pandemic has been an interesting situation. based on initial information from the CDC, i might suggest wearing a pair of rubber gloves. if you do not have a pair of gloves, inspect the camera without but be prepare to wash your hands after. recent information from the CDC suggest the virus does not spread much via contaminated surfaces.

    I use Canon's own software for my shutter counts. My two 5Ds are guaranteed for about 200K shutter actualisations, and my 7DII 250k. My 5DII is at 200K now whilst my 5DIII is only at 20-30K, guess which is my favourite out of the two. I have bought all my digital cameras, and digital lenses, new, although I have got an EF lens with an analogue camera. My film cameras are all second hand, but I tend to buy off known sellers recommended by different forums especially so with any lenses, backs, viewers for my Bronica where I always go to the same seller. I have broken all the rules once and bought a FSU rangefinder online and without seeing the camera first. Unfortunately the USSR was not known for quality control with many more misses than hits, even the hits can vary from ok to amazing with both camera and lens. I thought it was worth a punt for £50, including P&P, camera and lenses, and the seller promised both had had a full CLA. That Zorki 4K with its Jupiter 8 lens is now by far my favourite camera, not just because my wife bought it me for my b'day present, it takes amazing sharp images and is a real joy to use, but I’m not recommending others do the same as I did. If I was to buy a second hand digital I would take a laptop with me and take a tethered shot with the camera, you can then see all sorts of information when you take an image already connected to Lightroom. I’m pretty sure you can see the shutter count there in image properties. You can definitely find hot pixels etc by moving your blacks and whites with the alt key down. You can also see if all the colour presets work like landscape, neutral, portrait, etc. Most of all you will see if the tethering port works which is often crucial for any subjects requiring artificial lighting, such as some macro, food, still life, product and studio portrait. It was because mine broke on the 5DII that I bought the 5DIII. I wouldn’t take any cash to the first visit either, sorry but there too many scum balls in the world and you don’t know these people from Adam. Where possible I would buy from a dealer, you might pay a tad more but you should get a 90 day guarantee. Yet another great video full of brilliant advice.

    Thanks for the post/feedback Mark!:) The 5D series is a beast. I shot with the 5D Mark IV and really enjoyed it as well. Canon backs the camera with a 200k rating on the shutter which is great. Sounds like you found some great deals/equipment along the way - nice!:) I like the idea of taking a laptop although be careful as someone could steal that as well. Would you recommend to use a UV haze filter all the time? From what I've heared until now is that it's a very controversial question. Many people recommend a UV haze filter on every lens to protect the glass from scratches. But other people say it's also about the money and that you merely need a lens hood to protect the glass. In addition to that they say that the UV filter almost has no effect on todays cameras and that the fotos could be worse because the light has to pass through more lenses. In my opinion it also depends on the situation in which the photographer is using the camera. For example a motocross shooting or a windy day at the beach might cause contact from flying stones, dirt or sand with the lens. In this case it's definitely good to have it protected. Are you always using a UV haze filter on all of your lenses?

  • @RealWorld

    @RealWorld

    Thanks for the post/question:). For a handful of years I used a filter until I made a similar discovery - not needed:). I will state that I had a filter on a lens without a hood sitting on a small travel tripod. The tripod tipped forwarded and landed on the front edge of the lens. Did the filter help? Perhaps to some extent. Lenses are typically strong and surprising resilient to scratches. I have seen people attempt to scratch lenses for sake of testing and it was difficult:). Nonetheless, I go without a filter but like a hood if available.

One of my friend told me that camera drop into the water, But owner serviced it. My question is when I buy it and take more 10000-20000 shots Will the camera stop working? Can it be found whether it was dropped into the water? Camera price is $812 with Tamron 55-300mm lens.

    I would lean against the purchase as water can do funny things to electronics:). Typically rain on a camera is not a problem but full submersion can be:). If the camera is currently working, the submersion may have been very quick and water did not damage the circuitry. Curious to know how long ago it was dropped in the water. Yes, many technicians can identify if electronics were exposed to water.

    Something I have really been interested in is how distance effects image quality. I have a sigma 170-500mm and I've noticed that at 500mm the photos can get blurry. I don't know if this is from very humid air, dust, and just things in the air or if its from the lens being slightly off. No one has made a video on this subject but I remember Tony and Chelsea North mentioned it in a video.

    HI it's me again with another question. Tonight (I should've thought to ask earlier but we'll see) my son graduates with honors this will be indoors in the high school auditorium although the sun will still be up I'm assuming a low light situation. I looked in your videos for an indoor low light but didn't see one. I will be using the Nikon D-3400 and the 18-55 kit lens shooting in jpeg. No tripod it'll be elbows down hands properly placed best I can do. Not sure about S. A. Or M eg S 1/60? A5.3? M1/60 & 5.3? As you had suggested once in another situation I took iso off auto set to 100 or 200 but think maybe auto on default 100 Hi? Low? All my playing with this camera has been outdoors so think I'll experiment today indoors here at home and go a little early to experiment in the auditorium. I really got to get this camera down because the 29th he ships off to North Carolina for boot camp and when he graduates in full dress those are the photos I want perfect. Thanks again Sir.

    Thanks for the post/question!:) I recently took a bunch of shots indoor for a celebration/gathering of sorts using the D3400 along with the 18-55. Regardless of artificial indoor lights, there never seems to be enough:). How to get natural pictures indoor without a flash: I used aperture mode and left it opened as wide as it would go (note: you can get a wider aperture if you are zoomed out). I manually controlled my ISO but might suggest auto ISO (iso sensitivity = 100, set to a max = 12800, min shutter to 1/60 or 1/125). Controlling manual ISO is not bad and allows you to further impact the shutter speed which can be good depending on movement. For example, go to aperture mode and open wide > I believe the Fn button on the front left of the camera is assigned to the ISO > hold down the button and rotate the rear dial to quickly adjust the ISO > the shutter speed will adjust with each rotation of the ISO > if you want a faster shutter, simply increase the ISO. The only challenge I really see to this method is that you cannot select smaller ISOs. For example, you can select 6400 and 12800, but you cannot select anything in between but auto ISO can:). When shooting at higher ISOs, you will get noise in the image. Not a huge deal but be prepared to remove the noise if needed in post edit (created a video on how to do this in Lightroom - kzread.info/dash/bejne/on-i0q6bY5XQYdo.html ). Keep in mind that you could always use a flash for relative close portrait shots, etc., but I always like the natural shots when/if possible:). Hope all this helps!:)

    useful things here, so thanks champ. However as a seller I would walk away the moment someone asks me to take a picture with myself in it just to prove i own it. Unless it's a 40 grand RED camera or something of sort, I won't be stressing to that extent and level of scrutiny just to sell my gear worth a couple of hundred bucks. I appreciate people have to tread with caution but there's also a fine line between being careful and being annoyingly distrustful. It can be off-putting - to me at least. Ask me about shutter count no problem. Ask me if there are any damages, or who owned the camera from new, even ask me why i am selling it no qualms, but to ask me to send a photo of myself with the camera (probably with thumbs up and a bright smile) is just a no no for me. My 2 cents :)

    So I've been doing classified ad buys and sales for 28yrs now, and its how I originally started my business. Used to be ads in the paper, and it has evolved to now the best way is facebook marketplace where you have some sense of the person before you even meet. The trait that specifically connects with how much you should trust someone is conscientiousness. You can discern conscientiousness very effectively all on your own by using some basic assertive communication i.e. social skills. Meeting in public is good advice for sellers who want to avoid consequences but bad advice for buyers. The best place to meet for a buyer is at the seller's residence. People will get up to all kinds of nonsense when they are untraceable. At their home address they are directly traceable. If they are cagey in that setting, it tells you a lot before you even look at the goods. You can tell a lot by how someone keeps their home, and how well prepared they are for the sale and your arrival. Are the goods clean and have they made an effort to demonstrate them working? What steps have they made to ensure you are secure in the purchase? *conscientiousness* How do you do any of that outside a police station? You don't. If you are worried about security, bring a friend or leave the cash in the glove compartment. Or stay home and be afraid of the world like some kind of suburban shut-in. Also the entire premise of your advice that the buyer gets to set the meeting point is ridiculous. They don't. No seller will ever agree to that (its a huge time waster) and you will never get a deal off the ground with that kind of approach. As a buyer, if a seller starts talking about public meeting places, I'm already looking for other signs that they are cagey. As the seller, I want to control the setting (to protect myself) and make sure the buyer is set at ease. I usually use the lobby of my apartment building, and I prepare the items for sale and a way to demonstrate them. Buyers leave with a smile on their face and my security is totally covered. Your advice is nonsense to me because it doesn't manage any of the needs of the parties involved and instead puts them both at disadvantage. I've edited this in light of some of your replies because I have thought some more about it and I am even more assured in my opinion. I disagree with you, based on loads of personal experience and many years of successful experience with this kind of transaction with valuable electronics. Anonymity is a sign that a party is not trustworthy and you should just move on. That's why craigslist has had their a** handed to them by fb marketplace - people don't want anonymity they want to be able to exercise their social skills to discern the quality of the other party first.

    When the buyer determines the public location, the ball is in buyers court. More specifically, meeting at a police station weeds out any potential scammers. I would not recommend meeting at the sellers house as the buyer can easily walk into a trap (I know someone who went down this path). The sellers house may not be their house/apartment and they will have the upper hand.

    @@RealWorld the problem with "public place" meets is that the seller always defines the location, not the buyer. Try and get a seller to meet at your location. They will tell you to screw off.

    LOL - a police station does prevent scamming (www.safetradestations.com/where-to-trade.html):).

    Whenever I buy or sell, I set the location (a police station). I never had a legitimate seller or buyer willing to meet at a police station as this is in their best interest as well. If they are not willing to meet at a safe location, ask the simple question why? If the reply is not satisfactory, move on - better to safe than sorry:).

    Hello Real World, one more question. There are so many photography classes online such as one from Master Class. How do we know which one to choose? Is photography better learned in classroom setting in campus? Thank you.

    Not a problem and great question!:) I would honestly start with a few of my videos: Got your first DSLR (i.e. Nikon D3400) - now what? kzread.info/dash/bejne/aH1nzNaKlseTo7g.html Step away from Auto and into Program, Shutter, Aperture, and Manual modes kzread.info/dash/bejne/fYiix7iMqNmXodY.html Post processing kzread.info/dash/bejne/pqWYwaWnm5CscrA.html I have others videos that should be of help as well so feel free to browse around:). Once you have watch and understood the videos, hit the field!:) Go out and explore, experiment, and have fun. You will gain lots of ground by doing in my opinion - see what works and what does not. You might also consider a local photo group/club of some sort - ask around, etc.

    How do i protect my dslr against climatic conditions like humidity and dust so that the Lenses are protected from fungus?? Dry box are little more expensive, is there anything less expensive than a dry box??

    Thanks for the post/question:). One suggestion is to store your gear in a ziplock freezer bag when not in use. In addition, you might consider placing a few silica gel packs in the bag (silica packs will help absorb moisture).

    how about for lens??

  • @RealWorld

    @RealWorld

    Thanks for the post/question:). The key for lenses is to conduct the following: 1) check the mount points 2) closely examine the glass on both sides of the lens (looking for scratches, pits, etc.; lenses can still produce great images with a small scratch or two); check for dust/particles between the elements (many lenses are sealed; if not, some (very little) might seen/okay) 3) if zoom lens - rotate the zoom and feel for any friction or abnormal resistance 4) ask if the seller has kept a filter or lens hood attached (filters and hoods provide additional protection to the glass) 5) if possible, take a few shots with the lens (if buying remote, ask the seller to send a few shots with the lens)

    A new a7ii run around $900 new. $700 for a used a7ii w/ 17k on the shutter sounds fair. Is is a GREAT deal? Maybe not great but what I might might consider fair ... just my two cents:).

    Thanks for the question Mark:). 15k is fine ... tells me some used the camera but did not over use it:). I would not have a huge issues purchasing a body with 15k (the shutters are rated for much more ... 150k-200k).
