    So you don't need a parking certificate compare to a car ? I wonder if it could be possible to get one with a Working Holiday visa

    I didn't need a parking certificate for mine. I believe if you have any kind of working visa you can buy a motorcycle as long as you have a valid license.

    Could you tell me please wich ones are the taxes that you have to pay for bikes under and over 250cc?

  • @MukimukiRunner

    You will have a town tax (might also prefectural) on all bikes regardless of size once a year but it is usually really cheap. Mine is 2700 yen and it comes directly out of my bank account every year with no extra work. Any bike over 250cc will have that tax and shaken. When doing shaken you will have to make sure your bike passes an inspection and pay a tax. For me personally, it is worth not having to ever worry about shaken.

    Hmm that’s a good question. I didn’t try at the time but that would be nice. However I would doubt it. The merchant fee in Japan is pretty high I believe so business that sell expensive products usually only do cash or bank transfer. People here are also all about bank transfers despite them usually being less consumer friendly.

    How long it took you to get your motorcycle license?

  • @MukimukiRunner

    @MukimukiRunner

    It took two months. About 4 weeks of classes. Then you have to take your certificate to a police station on a designated day of the month. My local police station only has two days a month they accept the new driving certificates. Then about 2 weeks before I was able to pick up my license.

    Motorcycles can definitely be cheaper but chances are you will end up needing a car anyway if you live in a rural-ish area like me. Having them both for most people will just mean the bike is another expenses. For my situation, even with a car, my motorcycle including the cost of insurance, maintenance, and initial gear I purchased will pay for itself and in 3-5 years assuming it retains at least 60% of its original value, sell it, and how much mileage I put on it instead of on my car. I receive reimbursement for my commute to work based on my mileage. The mileage is the same if I take a car or motorcycle. When I drive a bike I pocket about 90% excluding wear and tear. Driving a car, I pocket maybe 50% excluding wear and tear. It adds up to a decent amount over time. Unfortunately, I need a car where I live. We get some snow and still need to get to work during a typhoon. The major expense of my car right now is car insurance and shaken. These alone are about 230,000 yen for this year. Complete different per person and car but still quite expensive.

    I park it right next to my apartment. It’s small enough I don’t need an actual parking space from the police like you would a car.

    It is possible but you will need Carnet de Passage for one. I imagine most people would go thru a shipping company that specializes in this kind of stuff and they will take care of any regulations and documents required to import into Japan. Most people I know have bought their bikes in Japan so I am not 100% sure. Hope that helps!
