How To Build Your First Website For A Client - Workflow and Tools

Ғылым және технология

❗️ Today I share the end-to-end workflow of how I create a website for a client. I would’ve saved so much time if someone sat me down before my first project and showed me their workflow and the tools they used.
🧠 Hopefully, by showing you the end-to-end process of how I make websites for clients, you can save yourself the hours of trial and error I went through to find a workflow that works.

    This is exactly what I was looking for! I am about to have my first client and needed a little help on going about this project. I’ve been self taught, learning off and on, for the past 5 years. After many obstacles I faced, like imposters syndrome, I am finally going to dedicate my extra time to go full force!

  • @dylanalbertazzi

    @dylanalbertazzi

    2 жыл бұрын

    You can. I love Squarespace and Wix for that because updating on their own is really easy. The other option is to set up a monthly 'maintenance fee' where you are paid monthly to make sure the site is running properly and do any small updates the ask for. It's a win-win bc it gives the client reassurance - no one wants to scramble to find a developer when their site is down and it's relatively passive income for you!

    Thank you so much for this information. This is EXACTLY the content I was looking for except for ONE thing I'm still a little worried about. You see I've designed websites, but I've never actually deployed one. Heres a couple of the things I'm wondering: - Hosting is a reoccurring fee. How do I go over that with the client? Deciding where to host their website and how they will manage the monthly fee and all? - If the client already has a website and domain name, how would I switch their page out with the new one I've created?

  • @dylanalbertazzi

    @dylanalbertazzi

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey NightOwl, good questions. It's standard to have the client pay for the hosting fees... shouldn't be any backlash there. As far as where to host, it depends. I like Wix and Squarespace for simple sites but if you're a designer those tools might be restrictive for you. Transferring the domain is common and is slightly different depending on where you host. There are plenty of tutorials that will help you out once you decide on a hosting provider.

    What's the difference in you using serverless framework vs aws amplify? Really excited to shift from server setup myself (although I like that stuff a bit) to these kinds of easier to maintain technologies!

  • @dylanalbertazzi

    @dylanalbertazzi

    3 жыл бұрын

    That's a great question! First off, serverless framework is cloud provider agnostic, you can use it with aws, azure, etc. Both overlap quite a bit because they use/are infrastructure as code (hence being easy to maintain). I think of the serverless.yml file, which is the heart of serverless as an easy to write cloudformation template. Amplify abstracts any cloudformation away from you. For practical use, if you want to get started in the cloud I would use amplify because they make it really easy to get started and hook up the front and back end. And as you get more comfortable with cloud concepts learn serverless framework and consider it for projects that will need to scale. Serverless makes it easier to customize more complicated architectures. With that said both are fast growing projects, and will likely add a lot of functionality in the next year! -Dylan

    I wrap that up into hosting costs. They are ultimately responsible for paying that. Wix has some good features for making that process simple with clients. I recommend making the site on the clients Wix account and then adding yourself as an admin.

    Great Explanation ! I have been searching this since a month. Its a better start for a beginner. • @dylanalbertazzi

    @dylanalbertazzi

    Жыл бұрын

    If you're using Wix and Squarespace your can either set up the account under the client's email and add yourself as an admin, or transfer afterwords. As long as you get paid both works. You can teach them how to make changes. You can also charge a monthly 'maintenance fee' to make changes when they come up. Or charge an hourly rate. The maintenance fee provides more value to the customer if you're doing SEO for them because you're adding value every month.

    but if I use wix, then they'll have the banner that says have wix with no ads. AND won't they have to pay 18$ per month to keep running the website?

    It sounds like you're off to a good start. Do your best to understand how each part of the code you're writing works, especially if you're copy and pasting it from stack overflow or somewhere similar. And most importantly don't focus on results (like building an incredible website) but focus on improving a little bit every day. If you do that, in a few months you'll look up and be amazed at the progress. -Dylan

    the hardest part is getting your customer to pay you? I was thinking about building WordPress websites on a test domain and only migrating the final website to the clients domain name after they pay me.

    That's one way to do it. One of my first websites was a portfolio page for a property manager and he just walked right at the end and didn't take the website even though it was done. Something to be aware of. I've also found that people are more invested once they've put money down. I hope you do great selling websites!

    Hey man I was very interested in building some websites, I was wondering how much money do you ask for when building websites?

  • @dylanalbertazzi

    @dylanalbertazzi

    Hey Kajean, ... that's kindof like asking how much a car costs, it depends. If you're going to do something for a small business, let's say a chiropractor who needs a landing, about, and contact page. And it's your first website I'd charge $300. If you think you can make them the best chiropractor website in town I'd charge at least $1000. If you're new start small and work up... you'll get there. Also, pricing is very subjective. If you're the best at what you do you can price based on value (not hours) and charge significantly more. If you have a specific example I can give more guidance.

I was interested to see what common patterns 1) got me to watch this entire video 2) content length 3) content material and structure 4) CTA (check out the high five thingyy worked on me lol 5) simple, elegant, intriguing, informing THANKS! I'm in sales if you want to hire me or offer a commission only deal. This may be a weird question, but once I've made the website, how do I give it to them? would i have to give them the info to the wix account I used? would I be the one responsible for the website? id assume this is something that the client and i have to talk about but id like some advice on it

    i'm a total newbie here but with my first client (and only so far) i suggested they create an account at siteground (a hosting platform) and give me the login credentials. then i went in and set everything up for them, told them to change the passwords to lock me out when i was done and that was that

    See here’s we’re I’m confused. I know how to make a website and do everything I need to. I understand how to get a domain name but thoes cost money. Are you expected to pay for the domain name for someone else or are you supposed to get them to pay for it? Or is there a free way to get domain names that I have not seen?

    The customer should buy and have ownership of the domain. Then they'll give you access to the domain service login or give you the records you need to connect to wix.
