    This sounds like a sorting system that *might* be able to handle a Scar-level end-game chest monster. And if so, it's probably sufficient for any more technically oriented server than HermitCraft. :-) It's just a bit too big for an individual base on an SMP, so I guess I can only take some inspiration for trying to come up with a smaller scale storage system that doesn't limit itself to hopper speed at all times.

    I note you are still using the old item arrangement in your filters, where you need a larger number of items of the item being sorted because the filler items you use are stackable to 64 meaning you need that larger number of the item being filtered. If you take something like snowballs that only stack to 16, they cause a larger redstone signal to be occupied, meaning you only require a very small number [2] of your filter items along with four [4] snowballs, one in each of the rest of the hopper slots. I also typically rename the snowballs to "Filler Snowballs" so there will never be a match for any regular filtered items, including regular snowballs.

    Hi cubic! I built this in our vanilla survival world. Took about ~2 months to gather materials and make. It was quite the endeavor... Other than the obvious stuff like, not using your mods to stack shulker boxes, we needed to make a few adjustments to the design. First problem building this in survival was your double speed hopper filter. Having 5 stacks of the same item in the middle hopper is quite a task in survival worlds. So I took on the task of designs to reduce the filter item. You can simply make a new dummy item for the middle area and require a single stack... but getting 64 of something like dragon heads is also not an ideal solution either. The problem stems from the top filter hopper always being unlocked and trying to push items into the middle hopper. If the middle hopper isn't full, it'll drain your filter item creating a sorting disaster. So I changed the design a bit to wrap the same power that locks the middle hopper--around the water channel--to lock the top hopper at the same time as the middle hopper. Making this single fix reduces the total amount of items needed to setup a filter to ~4! You still need to collect every item in the game, but it is no where near as painful. Great work and design otherwise. Cheers!

  • @cubicmetre

    @cubicmetre

    2 жыл бұрын

    Nice job! This storage should serve you and your server quite well, however be aware that if you lock the top hopper then it will not actually be able to suck items out of the water stream. The storage has two separate water streams, the one at the top is for handling bulk items and yes, this uses double speed item filters which need to have filter items in the top and bottom hoppers. The water stream underneath is for non-bulk items and these are only single hopper speed item filters. They only need 2 filter items in the top hopper to function, so I'm not sure why you would have items such as dragon heads assigned using double speed filters as these can be assigned to non-bulk and sorted at single hopper speed. Double check the video and you will notice I do cover this issue with the filter items which is the reason why I separated the bulk and non-bulk this way.

  • @GravityAB

    @GravityAB

    @@cubicmetre Dragon heads were a poor example haha... I was just trying to make up an example. I think beacons are would be a better example. You have those in the bulk storage location and I don't have any crazy wither farm... >_> yet. You've already interestingly enough spotted my next obvious problem. I'm just a moron. I hadn't done any of the testing on live streams, just putting the items manually into the hopper and seeing what I get. I'm not sure I can get away with a single stack of items in the 2nd hopper for the time being but I guess I'll play around and see what I can do. It's not terrible, it just means I'll be banging away at it for much longer :). Thanks for the response.

    @@GravityAB You can just use a different dummy item and a stack of the item being filter in the lower hopper, the only reason I show the hopper being full of the filtered item in the video is because I am using the storage tech aid which doesn;t have an option to change the dummy items.

    More technical servers like the one I play on have multiple 1million plus drop rate an hour farms which would fill an ender chest full of items in mere minutes. Things like this are perfect for larger technical servers because we can render the chunks of the farm portal hop the items through and sort them automatically without Manual movement of over 100,000 shulker boxes full of gun powder or slime. This system would never break even for a solo player and that’s fine. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that and I’m glad your system Is working for you!

  • @cubicmetre

    Yeah, when I talk about "relatively simple to build", what I mean is that the workflow for building it is consistent and doesn't require any awkward tasks, for example using 1wt features and standardising means you can build much faster. Any main storage is a complex machine to build, but minimising the amount of work involved is a good thing to consider in the design.

    So i have come up with the most versatile and easy to use storage system yet it relies on chest overflow. items will sort into chests as normal, but once the chest gets full, it starts loading the items into shulker boxes. This ensures there is always a full chest of the item which is easy to access along with it acting like a normal storage system for items you dont really have much of.

Second I had a somewhat sorted storage system underground, made to last a week or two, and It still exists 5 months later where I just made a simple autosorter. Now I see this and question the existence of the universe.

    From my understanding, the encoder stacks items to release in lots of 10/30/60 for an 8 tick release rate. Encoder also unloads at higher hopper speeds and handles the shulker box inputs to unload into those stacks. When those item stack entities are sent into the storage they can be picked up as a whole stack more efficiently than sending items. Fulfilling the efficiency (reduced lag, faster sorting) and reliability requirements (no item allowed to shoot past the storage slice).

    As usual you are inovating and finding new ways of dealing with storage tech... The slices are really impressive and i dig the use of water. The system is user friendly with in slice overflow as well as alarms, honnestly blown away. I will however still add a MIS and a non stackable sorting system to reduce the size even more. One question tho : if they decide in 1.18 or beyond to add another type of item like copper with dozens of variations, is the encoder expandable as easily as the slices ? EDIT : also wouldn't it be worth it to separate full shulkers from the others so that they are directly stored in the right slice without having to unload the box entirely ? If i am collecting boxes from various farms it would take a really long time to unload it all

  • @cubicmetre

    @cubicmetre

    There once was a scholar in the field of storage tech who proposed such a sorting method, the only issue is that you can never gurantee that just because a box has full ss, that it only contains 1 item type. It could in fact have a stack of many item types in every slot, or even an unstackable in any slot. Unfortunately the only sorting method for such boxes is the player's diligence to put full boxes in their correct storage slice.

  • @Sardoron

    @Sardoron

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@cubicmetre yes that was my concern as well, but i think it would take less time to manually put back those very few boxes that are full but not of a single item type where they belong rather than doing it the other way around... i think when taking into account full boxes, the vast majority of them are full of one item type. The only concern would be if full boxes of different item types could break the sorters

  • @Firigion

    @Firigion

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@Sardoron The better solution for that is having a separate input for full single item type boxes, and depend on user input. That makes it less convinient to use, tho, and since the system is quite fast as it is now, I think it's good. Only reaosn to add the full box extra input is if you are gonna store farm outputs in main storage (prolly in bulk), like slime or gunpowder.

  • @ergilly

    I think sorting by the most stored items in servers doesnt quite work, cos they wont be the most used items, i.e. dried kelp blocks are closer to the middle than cobblestone in this design because servers will have kelp farms which are mega-effective, but nobody uses dried kelp as much as cobble...
