How To Build the Ultimate Router Table with Incra - Pt. 2

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Using some Incra parts I have and some new items, I start building what I think is the ultimate router table. Lots of storage, mobile base, router lift, bit and accessory organization, and of course the Incra LS Positioner System.

    Just finished building this - thanks Guy, it worked out really well, and I'm looking forward to using it! A few minor issues with the build, but overall everything worked the way you said it would. To answer the questions below about drawer runner position, I made the screw holes 7/8" up from the bottom of the drawer, with the exception of the top drawer on the left side, which was 1 3/4" up, because otherwise the drawer gets too close to the middle shelf. One other point is that I couldn't find a standard kitchen door type hinge that would work with 1/2" plywood, so I used some door hinges that were surface mounted. I put the hinge on the right and put a magnetic catch on the left side to hold the door closed. Happy to answer other questions if anyone has any.

    Great Router table. I only have a few questions. When you are talking about the draw slides, one place you said get 10 and 16" slides and then later you wrote that you used 10 and 14" slides. I was just wondering which ones do I need to get. I am a very new wood worker and I was wondering how far off the bottom of the drawer sides and back do you cut the 1/4" grove for the draw bottom. Looks like it is about 1/4". Is that close to be right? Also how much space do you need between the draw fronts. Thanks for your time and concern in these matters, and I just hope I can build my cabinet to be half as good as yours. Guess I will never learn unless I try.

  • @tomletourneau7978

    Hope these tips help you with your build. First of all, I want to thank Guy for inspiration and a great plan. I wouldn't have ever attempted this without his vision and video guidance. That being said, I found it useful to modify things a bit. Not necessary at all, but helpful to me. 1. Use cabinet grade ply if you can afford it. My experience with Big Box ply (even "good stuff") is iffy. I buy my stuff at Woodcraft. I find alternate ply has too few ply layers and is often bowed. 2. If you route the 4 inch and 2 1/2 inch hoses out the left panel and rear panel (both on the left side of the cabinet) you will have the entire right side for four drawers, all full depth. You can then have one deep or two shallow drawers under the CleanSweep... but these one or two will still need a 10 inch draw slide (because the exhaust hoses are at the back) I found this also shortens the amount of hose needed and also makes the panel above the draws easier to manipulate. 3. Guy's method to install the draw slides is very useful and clever. Recommend (as he does) that you leave the router table off until near the very last for drawer slides and electrical work, as well as any adjusting required. 4. Drawers can be joined with pocket holes if you wish. Jay bates has a couple of videos on KZread that substantiate this method. But use glue too. I used a TS for the bottom grooves. 5. Draw slides are all 15 inch on the right side, and ten inch on the left side. This is a bit confusing, as sometimes the video and the written commentary suggest fourteen inch slides. 6. The door and the draw faces are easier to deal with if you use 3/4 ply. First off, I don't think half inch ply for the door is possible, as you need to drill half inch recesses in it for the Euro hinges. Secondly, the door and draws will only be even (on the cabinet face) if you use 3/4 inch ply. Thirdly, the Euro hinge is a "Full Overlay" (Blumotion 110d, #152740). This will allow the door to overlay a 3/4 inch filler strip that you install on the left side of the middle divider, to the right of the CleanSweep cabinet. The dimensions would be approx. 18" tall, 2 1/2" wide and 3/4" thick. Guy's video actually shows something like this, and he also recommends 3/4 ply in his commentary in the lengthier list of commentaries on his Incra KZread Channel. The door will fully overlay this filler strip on the hinge side, be even with 3/4 draw faces of the right side, and soft close (as inset) on the left side of the cabinet, even with the frame. Hope this isn't confusing :) 7. When you join 3/4 to 1/2 inch ply, I've found it useful to use 1 1/8 inch wood screws. These are available on Amazon. They come in handy in my shop and I don't worry about "screw through." 8. I used SO (14 Gauge) electrical cable and made my own extension, routed to the right side of the cabinet where I mounted the Jessum switch. I do recommend (as Guy's video hints) that you might wish to cut you router's cable short (about 8 inches from the router motor). Then install a new male plug. This allows you to keep a short amount of extension cord inside the CleanSweep box and makes it simple to remove your router if ever required. Also this prevents a bunch of coiled cable inside the box, should you feel you want the ability to remove the router, and also use an extension cord. 9. Perhaps this goes without saying, but even with the excellent plans Guy (and other craftspeople at other times) provide... you should always double-check things before cuts, There are too many variables: wood thickness, blade kerfs, misprints in directions, and so forth. I sheepishly admit that despite being careful, two draws I fully made were a tiny bit too wide to fit in this cabinet. I had lots of choices to correct this, but the easiest (for several reasons) was to remake the drawers to fit). Have fun, and thanks again, Guy!

    Hi Guy, great build. I'm currently building the same cabinet, thanks to your great videos and instructions. I have two questions though. 1. How far forward are the ends of the drawer slides I the cabinet? In the video it appears that they extend past the filler strips and line up with the innermost lip on the extruded aluminum. Also, this dimension will change if I use 3/4 drawer faces, correct? 2. How far off the cabinet bottom do I place the lowest drawer slides? Thank you in advance.

    Thank you guy. I just finished mine. I made a few changes. I used Blum tandem self close slides and poplar for the facia. I had some left over pre finished 1/2" material that I used for drawers. I wish I used 3/4 material for the bottom to have more stability, but like you said it's not fine furniture.

    Question on the table dimensions -- what is the use case for so much fence travel? I like the functionality of the Incra fence system, but I've always wondered why people build their Incra router tables with the layout similar to yours. I can't think of an instance where I needed 18+" between the bit and the fence.

    Guy, Very educational video. Thanks. It motivated me to build the cabinet exactly as you laid it out. Okay, so I am really new at building cabinets and placing drawer fronts (like this cabinet is my first). 1. I am at the place where I am placing drawer slides. I cannot find the dimension for the height of the bottom of the spacer for the highest drawer on the left side (the one immediately beneath the door). Can you help, please. I don't want to go through a trial and error sequence as I am not sure how to determine this exact measurement. 2. Also, when placing the drawer fronts, does the bottom of the draw box align/ flush with the bottom of the drawer front?

  • @GuysShop

    Hey Logan. The spacer for that drawer should be 4 3/16". The drawer fronts do not line up with the bottom of the drawer, and overhang them a little bit to provide clearance.

Can the fence set back from bit and make a dado in the mid section of a piece of wood? Just trying to see the many options of have the fence move away from the bit, towards to the maximum length of the incra fence's you can purchase (17, 25, etc). thanks, ron

    Hi Guy, your router table is a great machine. I do not understand why all router tables are not set up with the Incra positioning jig to locate the fence. My first and so far only router table was set up this way. It is particularly good for finger joints.I am intrigued as to why you used aluminium extrusions for your new router table frame, why did you not joint the plywood panels?I do not have a router lift just a hinged table top, a digital height guage and an index set of metric drills for adjustment (accurate to half a millimeter).Thanks from Colin in Northern Ireland

    Guy, I am relatively new to woodworking, but wanted to make your router cabinet. I need advice on 3 questions: 1) how can I use 35 mm concealed hinges on 1/2 inch plywood doors when mortise needs to be 13 mm.? Can I affix extra 1/4 inch strip to edge where mortise is placed? 2} in your plans the filler strip for door hinge is oriented with width perpendicular to face of center divider, but in video it is laid flat to center divider. I suspect the video is the correct way; am I right? 3) you indicate that the 2 drawers on the left can be 10” deep, but since there is a 4” and a 2.5” hose that have to cross each other (16”-6.5” = 9.5”) and since the dimensions specify inside diameter and the outer diameters are larger how can that work? Thank you for the plans and ideas. I hope that someone can answer my questions and that they may help others. Chris

    Hi Guy, I just picked up the Incra Combo #3. I'm considering making your cabinet for mine own system. I have a question. Since you've had this for a little while now, and have had some time to worked with it, is there anything you would do different if you could? Is it working for you, and your work flow? Thanks for offering the plans for this! Love your videos too! -Darrell

    Guy, You inspired me! I purchased the SuperSystem #3 and began to build from scratch. All done, except for the drawers and door. Thanks for your video! As one or two others have noted, the door plans and video appear different. Being a relative neophyte at cabinets, I got confused with the dimensions of your filler strip and the type of hinges you installed. I guess I'm going to use 3/4 ply for both the door and the draw faces (so they lay flush side by side). If you might take a moment to write any info on dimensions for the final filler strip and the hinges, I'd be grateful. I have to say, I've watched some of your other videos and find you an excellent instructor and promoter for incra. I have been lucky to own several of their products.

    I’m so pleased that you said that. I was also confused between the video when Guy install the filler strip, and what the plan say. It looks like in the video that Guy is using a piece that is about 2 1/2 inches wide, rather than the inch by three-quarter which is stated in the cut list.

    Hello Guy...I'm new to woodworking and wanted your opinion. I'm purchasing a table saw with the Incra Fence. Do you recommend having a dedicated Router table with another Incra fence or have a router table attached to the table saw. Thank you and love your channel Fred C

    Hi Fred. It's hard for me to recommend one way or the other. It really has to do with work flow, shop space and budget. For me, having a separate router table is a much batter way to do it.

  • @abrahamlincoln5283
    @abrahamlincoln52833 жыл бұрын

    Looks great. One question though ... according to Incra's "Caution" label there needs to be adequate air flow to prevent overheating the router. How would you do that without keeping both the dust collector door and the router table cabinet door open when routing larger pieces that cover the router plate? It would appear that there should be louvers on the side of the dust collector as well as louvers within the cabinet to draw in outside air. It seems to me that with the router plate covered and both doors closed no cooling air will get to the router. I've heard of users having their router overheat and most of the time they blame the router.

    Air is drawn through the router plate and fence. I have never had an issue with the router overheating.

    Hey Guy great cabinet and awesome video as always! I have a couple questions regarding the Incra products why did you choose the Incra Mast-R-Lift II over the Incra PRL V-2 Lift? Is the miter fence you used while making the drawers the 1000HD? I have been looking at that model and it seems like a good compromise on the fences they offer robust but not overly complicated. Lastly do the Rockler collet wrenches work as advertised? Thanks for your help.

  • @GuysShop

    @GuysShop

    7 жыл бұрын

    Thanks Paul! I chose the Mast-r-lift because I could use the clean sweep rings for the plate, and they are also held in by magnets. Just one less tool to use when I need to set up, and of course the DC is awesome with them. And yes, that is the Miter 1000HD miter fence. The wrenches from Rockler work really well, much better than the pieces of crap they ship from Porter Cable with the router.

    Hey Paul, I was mistaken when I said the the PRL-V2 does not have Magna Lock Clean Sweep Rings. IWhen I was shopping for lifts, I must have been comparing the Woodpeckers model and not the Incra.

    I've got the same LS 25 positioner and I have a question. There seems to be a lot of play in the positioner/fence when it's not locked down completely in the base. Is that normal? So much so that the fence leans onto the table top and I have to lift up a little on it to move it back and forth otherwise it doesn't travel smoothly. Thanks

  • @GuysShop

    Loved these 2 videos & the one on the Incra lift & dust collector! One thing I wasn"t clear on was the use of the Incra fence with this table. I'm guessing you have separate fence systems for the router table & your tablesaw, but if someone can only afford one Incra fence system, how difficult is it to move the fence between the saw & the router and what"s involved in recalibrating each time? Also, what are your thoughts about using an Incra TS Combo where the router is installed to the side of the saw & just one Incra fence is used for both operations?

  • @GuysShop

    @GuysShop

    6 жыл бұрын

    It would be very cluncky and inconvenient to transfer the fence fro the router table to saw, and It's really not designed to be used that way. I also did a video on the Incra table saw fence, and I show how the fence along with mounting a router table in the saw would work.
