Doing the cardboard will prevent soil drainage. Use the Pond Algae for a bed liner. As it rots it adds nitrogen phosphorus nickel zinc. And traps. Carbon as it breaks down
I can't helpg self to start up my garden beds too... A beautiful garden flower garden and vegetable garden and fruit bearing trees love it

When you're near a pond or body of water an see that thick mat of. Pond slime. Floating on top. Take a pool screen an scoop it out. And make it to balls. Dry it out an add to the soil. It's high in nitrogen. Phosphorus iron. Zinc. Carbon. And benefits nitrogen fixing bacteria into the soil.

Those are 4" x 8" x 16", the narrowest of the three main sizes of 16" concrete blocks. I use 6" x 8" x 16" which are cheap at Home Depot.

Ang galing! Cat cage converted into modular fence.

Hey i have 13 of those beds up and running already, you know what they say, great minds think alike! Sadly I have some pests problems, the stinky kind 😩. cats just keep pooping all over them! So I dedicated a small bed for them and filled it up with catmint, not a full proof method but atleast some of the destruction moved out of my veggie beds already and they seem to enjoy it. I have no way of fencing it currently so Im open for suggestions. Also love the look of it in your garden!

In my old garden I used thick mulch ( Coco coir/fiber ). I also tried putting up bbq sticks and twigs and it really works. Modular fence like the one I'm using seems effective too. We have 10 cats and it seems that none of them are interested to dig the garden bed since I installed the fence.

I have quite a few stray cats usually wandering in my backyard. I have 6 beds like those and hundreds plastic pots. I've rarely seen cat poops in my raised beds, perhaps only in the winter when the beds have some rooms. I guess that was because I grow many different herbs in my raised beds mixing up with other plants. The herbs I grow are sweet basils, Thai basils, 2 varieties of perillas, dills, parsley, cillantros, onions, lemongrass, peppers, edible chrysanthemum... Also I plant them very dense since I have so many different kinds of seeds, so always need room to grow and the cats have no way to walk inside the beds.

Suggest ko lang kapag naglagay ka ng dried leaves basain mo ng tubig tapos tapak-tapakan para mag compact saka lagyan ng lupa. Kahit isang taon pa hindi bababa ang lupa.

Smooth out the ground and lay down the blocks as evenly and straight as you want. Use a string line if you want them really straight, and a level if you want them level. Wider blocks might be better if you want to stack up blocks higher, like I do.
It has some draw back. 1:The soil is not that deep to accumulate the roots. It may pass through down the floor. 2: the hollow block wall is not that firm enough to hold and it will be destroyed by dogs cats or chicken.

I've been adding soil on top from time to time and my plants are growing well so far as I've been growing on it for over a year now. Hollow blocks are still standing as of now.

The raised bed's soil in this clip is indeed very shallow. But it depends on what you grow. If you grow plants that don't have deep tap roots like tomato plants, peppers,... then those raised beds are good enough. Herbs, lettuces, mustards,... grow fine on those beds. The soil she added on top looked like it has very good quality, so with soil like that you can grow many things. The organic material stuff she put underneath would break down in less than a year, the leaves in a few months, so even with they half broken down, the plants roots would find ways to grow down around them. Plus she said she added more soil, so that work. The things she did wrong in that clip were : 1. It necessary to dig up the soil inside the beds with a pick, on the ground underneath to loose up the dirt, in case the roots grow deep underneath. Avoid walking in jumping inside the beds to promote loose, airy soil. 2. There no need to put cardboard at the bottom. The cardboard will rot down eventually, but in the nearly future, it block the plant roots to grow deeper down. You can break down the cardboard, then pút them at the bottom. 3. Philippines has good climate with rains and fertile soil, so it's very easy to grow things there. Unless you want to avoid animals digging up then you put metal cloth at the bottom, cardboards at the btm like that are useless for burrows. Cardboard can retain the water, but with shallow beds like in this clip, the use of cardboards doesn't help much at all. I have raised beds similar to that in more than 15 years in the California desert with dry strong wind, harsh sun and poor soil. I used lots of wood branches, weeds, grass to the raised beds' btm, plus I also used soil in the backyard, sands, perlite, manures, garden soil, peatmoss... so after years,even all the big branches broken down to fine dirt, and my raised beds now have very high quality soil. My cement blocks I used are just half the size of the ones in this clip, yet they are holding great. Cats, dogs don't want to do anything with them, and they can't " destroy" them, let alone chickens.

@@kqdwills lots of western garderners putting cardboard. and that's the point... to eventually break down as it adds carbon to the soil. but at the time being, it hepls suppress weeds.
@mirieshii1948
7 ай бұрын
you're obvioulsy not a farmer. hahaha. lots of raised garden beds featured in western garderners have height similar to this. and similar composition (organic matrials below with cardboard then soil on top). of course it is common sense that you can't plant fruit trees in this but almost all types of vegetables can be grown in it.
Saan po ba nakakabili ng modular cage ma'am
