Thanks for the video. I am finishing up the Gramercy kit version. Still need to turn the handles. I will definitely have to make a bird's-mouth jig like you showed. Great idea to cut mortise while stock is still square. It is easy to blow out ends if you chisel out the mortise without the supporting wood.

wow they look amazing and seem to work very well I am new to coping saws, but by the luck of the fool, I bought my coping saw blades in form of the round steel strings with the synthetic "diamond" particles stuck on it's surface. that allows me to make the cuts in any direction, change the angle, cut curves and you name it. I wonder if the cutter string holders / clamps are available, if not, you can buy the few dollars coping saw with such clamps, take them out, and put into your wooden coping saw frame. these cutter strings with "diamond" on it are sold by feet on spools. they are very cheap. so there will be no teeth / no pull or push cutting direction. the cutting "diamond" string cuts both on push AND pull. well done!

Excellent video, thanks Jonathan. Just ordered 2 kits and blades form Taylor Tools. They will make a perfect staycation project to do with my son (17 yo). I finally bit the bullet and picked up the Astra Coated Ultimate Flush Trim from Bits and Bits (thanks for the 15% off code!) but I think for this project, maybe we'll stay low teck and do it with the bandsaw, rasp and good old sanding. Question... do you think that woods like Bubinga or Purpleheart are too open grained for this project? I'd hate to go to the work and then have it split or break. If you think they aren't suited, I have a little Jatoba as well as Hickory and Maple. Love your content, keep up the great work!

I noticed that you tied the string with a granny knot. A granny knot is significantly less secure that a square knot, which is what should be used in this application. Even better, a blood knot, AKA barrel knot, would probably be the optimal knot for this.

Hardly worth the time to make a coping saw when you can buy them on Amazon for $15-20. ..

I know you've never used a good coping saw then. That's like saying, "why would you build a custom hotrod when you can just go buy a Toyota Tercel." The difference is night and day.

@@katzmosestools I have 3 coping saws that are just simple and plain but they all work just fine. I dont see how your car analogy applies. It's just a sharp blade under tension.

@@katzmosestools Maybe you are right, but I doubt I will ever get to do that. That red aluminum one you have sure is fancy but I can't afford spending $170. for one. Different topic..did you see my message about the compact router reviews you did. Great reviews but I'm having a hard time deciding as I explained in the message, so if you have any more feedback it would be appreciated.

@@katzmosestools A little background on me fyi. My father was a woodworker for over 50 years and he had me working with him out in the garage even using his old table saw at age 5. I'm nearly 75 now and recently decided to get back into woodworking. It's amazing the many fancy precision tools that I see people use on you tubes. I wish I could afford some of them and had the shop space too. When I was 21 I made a pair of hexagonal speakers out of teak veneered 3/4" particle board using my dad's ancient old table saw. They came out beautiful with the grain matching on each panel and you couldn't put a piece of paper in any of the joints. The edges were all veneered and I even had doors that closed perfectly to make a perfect hexagon. I still have those speakers today 54 years later and they still look and work great. The tools I had back then would be considered crude by today's standards. I inherited all his tools and have bought a few things like a drill press, belt sander and bandsaw to upgrade my little workshop. I read and watch a lot of reviews before buying anything so I can get things that will work properly and last a while. I am enjoying the woodworking and the many videos I watch on you tube...some better than others....yours are always good.
