Cool Stefan. Feel free to ask any questions, I will answer asap. Your questions will also help me to know what to make future videos on. These stairs had a retardant painted onto them called rugasol before pouring which allows them to be washed the next day with High pressure water giving an exposed aggregate finish. If this is what you are after do a search on rugasol.

@@bmformworkconcreteconstruc9783 - Thanks, thats awesome! :) I was going to make the same kind of stairs you make here, from wall to wall but the cost "skyrocketed" so now the plan is a 1 M wide stair with 7 steps up to a plateu about 2x2 M and the finally three steps more and perhaps some smaller walls for the last three steps. I have limited experiance so the first shock was that 25 kg concrete equals 13 liters of finished product one sack is nothing! :) A couple of questions for you - How long before you can remove the forms? I understand its depending on a lot of things but what do you look for that tells you its time? I want to use a broom to get a "slip-free" surface. If you ever calculate how much concrete you need for a certain kind of stair, that would be helpfull. Last question, is it ok to "bulk" out the concrete with other stone? The current stairs are made out of stacked cobblestone and its falling apart but I was thinking I could use these stones to fill out the stairs (how thick does the concrete need to be in order to be strong enough? I am thinking somwhere around 10 cm?) Thanks again! I saw a couple of your other videos after this one and they're all great - please keep it up! :D

@@stefanfrisk9598 firstly if you are doing a plain concrete finish you want to build the stairs different to this video, you want the face of the form to be one piece wall to wall. The way I have done it with the cleats and packers will not be neat, the ply "endgrain" will show. When you pour use a hammer drill or electric sander on the forms to vibrate the concrete to remove air bubbles. Just float the concrete up to your levels, let it set till your fingers leave a small indent in the concrete, so its just a tiny bit soft, then trowel it up good. There are lots of videos on this, I dont do the concrete but I will post some vids soon of my best concretors I work with doing it. You can strip the forms same day when concrete still soft and trowel the stairs. Or you can strip following day. Just be careful not to chip corners of stairs. Leave all your nail heads exposed for easy pulling out. Measuring the concrete is easy, remember a triangle is half of a square. Stairs are just a series of triangles. Do not mix the conc by hand. Here you can order "mini" concrete trucks or ask the local company what cost of minimum order is. You just ask for stair mix. Not sure what country you are in but here that's all you need to do. For the thickness, try to have a minimum of 150mm. Use some mesh too. Always better to use mesh. And have a thickening at bottom so stairs "key" into the ground so overtime stairs don't shift.

@@bmformworkconcreteconstruc9783 - wow, thanks! I have "youtubed" "concrete stairs" for a month or two, I can't understand why none of your videos popped up before - the algorithm sucks, I guess. Thanks for your answers, I have already ordered the materials so I will have to mix everything myself and the ply you use (we call it form-plywood) was all gone (everyone is buildning during the pandemic, everything is gone and/or expensiva as ****) so the bulk of the form will be all wooden "planks". Good point on the triangles, my first calculation was a square for every step and a triangle inbetween, no wonder it was expensive! :) I live in Sweden. Thanks again!

Very nice work. I appreciate your attention to detail and well thought out processes. Do you prefer to nail the packet and cleat from the side to the riser as in the video? Why not face nail the riser to the cleat? Seems like it would make for a cleaner face to not have the end of plys on the concrete. But it would offset the cleat from your layout, so perhaps not as convenient in that case. Curious of your thoughts. Thanks for sharing

Concreters do the reo, they just slide it down from the top. If I have star pickets in the way they just pull them out, put mesh down and put star picket back in. It's a bit of catch 22 on big stairs. As theoretically you would put the mesh in first then build stairs however in reality that's not the best way often as the grade is often wrong and gets fixed after we build stairs. We just build it the way the concretors want. If they want mesh in first we will do it but they usually just slide it down from top after.

@@bmformworkconcreteconstruc9783 OK thanks. I am considering doing an owner builder (just outside of Brisbane) and for the ground level floor I am seriously considering these cement blocks that interlock (vertically and horizontally), and then you core fill them. I have been talking to a mate about the best way to build the platform underneath the stairs (thinking of using welded RHS box section, and that smooth faced coated ply, planning to, but doesn't have to be removed) as I would like to put a compressor / big vacuum for my big DIY CNC machine under the stairs, so concrete would be ideal for sealing between the two block walls and not letting dust work its way upstairs, or across to the home theatre room next to the workshop. I said if I was to do the horizontal reo before I core filled the walls, I could use a masonry drill to put holes in the blocks and put lengths of straight reo from side to side so it tied the stairs to the walls. Obviously since I would be building for myself and my time is not worth as much as someone who does it for a living, any additional drilling work wouldn't be a major hassle for me. The other idea I had was, and I don't know if it would be possible... If I was to do just do a ~150mm thick ramp (with lots of crossed reo, so both across and diagonally down) and use something like an upside L bracket to mount the steps. Since the building regulations are fairly strict on any variation between steps, I thought if I could drill into the ramp and anchor the brackets (or alternately mount L brackets to the block walls or a diagonal piece of wood with cutouts mounted to block walls), I could ensure I had uniform step height (custom if the ramp isn't perfect flat), whereas I wouldn't feel the same level of confidence if I was to try and pour it in one go. What do you think, doable or a bad idea?

I build the stairs the same way if to be stripped while conc is green. Every riser I build 5-10mm short and they just slide out. it's too expensive to be cutting my timbers in half. I just make them shorter, the break for easy stripping is on the end not in the middle. The only thing I do differently is I will screw the string to the wall rather than nail as concretors prefer screws.

As in show the concrete and reinforcement? If so here in western Australia it is generally a separate trade. My company specialises in off-form formwork... to do the concrete, because most residential jobs are exposed aggregate you are then expected to do the concrete for a whole house... and funny enough the concretors generally only want to do the concrete and leave the formwork to guys like myself. I don't enjoy concrete, I enjoy carpentry and smaller fiddly jobs so that is what we do and I make more money this way, i would earn far less doing both. Also most of the work we do is a bit more complex than what I have made videos on... I can't always film, sometimes I'm just too busy and sometimes what I film is no good to use. I don't earn money from the videos either so priority is always the client and making bank!

I’ve never seen it done this way? I’ve been a chippy for 40 years. Why don’t you just work out your rise and going then mark it out along the string, cut the string to suit the r&g then fix the inverted string to the walls and fix your risers to the cut outs on the string? Sorry mate.

what country are you doing this? I have only ever seen 2 people use your method here, myself and 1 other. I do it for curved stairs. I just like to keep the stringers uncut so on the next job we can use them for something else. no stair is the same so I can't really re-use the stringers, it's just a waste of material. I'll make a video doing your method. I could do it today actually.

i thought UK! I hope your carpentry is better than your cricket team! the problem I find when using ply for stringer is that we usually use 1800 lengths, so its never long enough, joining it is a bit of a pain, unless you can advise otherwise? I've been thinking about it all day and thinking of a way to make it work efficiently and cheap enough. I'll find a way and make a video, it's a challenge I need to solve as I do like that way. yeah I learned all the old methods, worked with some very good guys. I enjoy using new tools and experimenting, I find it keeps me keen, after 17/18 years of this, it gets repetitive otherwise.

@@bmformworkconcreteconstruc9783 Don’t talk about the cricket please!😬 Our sheets of ply are 2.4m long but are still not long enough, generally they don’t need joining as such, just butted up and fixed to the wall. I have been thinking about your method in the video and it certainly does the job, the only thing I would say is that when you use strings for an open end ie inverted strings, once you have determined the going and the rise and have marked and cut them, it is just a case of levelling the tread cutout on the string to determine the angle. Ie, no need to mark the walls with every step, I hope that makes sense? Also for reference when you cut the tread always allow 2-3 mm in order to trowel up to the wall. I hope you don’t mind me saying but the “stringer” is the longitudinal support member under the formwork the “string” is the string the (cutout section) sorry I’m so old school. Great videos though mate, very informative for budding shuttering/formwork chippies.
