How To Build An Elevated Raised Garden Bed - DIY Planter Box With Free Plans

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Today I build a very large and sturdy elevated raised garden bed for some of my vegetables. This was a backyard DIY planter box and I include free plans.
Total Dimensions:
Garden Box - 8-ft L x 28 1/2-in W x 32-in H
Garden Box with Railings - 100 1/4-in L x 32 1/2-in W x 33-in H
Total of 13 - 1x6x8 - Cedar Planks
6 - planks used for the length of bed / 3 on each side (cut evenly) slightly under 8 x 5 ½"
2 - planks used for the width of bed / 3 on each side (cut evenly into 30”) about 30 x 5 ½"
5 - planks used for the bottom of the bed / (cut evenly just shy of 30” - about 28 ½ x 5 ½")
Total of 5 - 1x6x8 - pressure treated planks
2 planks -cut evenly into 6 legs = 32”x 5 ½”)
1 plank - cut evenly into 3 legs = 32” x 4 ½")
1 plank - cut into 1 leg = 32” x 4 ½" and 2 - 32 ½ x 2 ¼" then 45 degree miter cut on each end (total of 10 legs and 2 short railings if using)
*Extra wood from last plank cut is used for long trim/railing (optional) and for bed brace
1 plank used for the top long trim/railing cut into 2 pieces then add extra scrap wood to create 2 railings. Total length about 100 3/8” x 2 ¼" with 45 degree miter cut on either end. (optional)
1 - 2x4x8 - pressure treated (cut in half length-wise then cut slightly to match length of bed)
Total of 2 pieces that are about 1 ¾” x 1 ½" x 8
Paint - optional
Railings - optional - no railings - remove 1 pressure treated plank from plan
Screws used - #10 x 1-1/2-in Exterior Wood Screws
Landscape Fabric - amzn.to/3aW7yjw

    Nice job, I’m a G.C. and carpenter , I like what you did, I’m gonna copy you, suggestion, stop working on the ground, 2 adjustable saw horses and a cheap 28 or 30” hollow core door makes a good but light weight work table and if you don’t leave it in the direct weather it will last quite a while, believe me, if you keep working like that it’s going to take a tole on your body and soon.

    I like these boxes and will be building some this weekend. I have one suggestion though, use just one screw in the middle of each bottom slat. That will allow the wood to expand and contract which will help prevent it from cracking and splitting.

    Nice job. As a suggestion for those who do not own a jig for drilling holes. a good carpenters glue like Titebond III and some clamps should provide a sturdy elevated garden box in the tongue and groove parts of the boards. Use galvanized or decking screws. Don’t use steel nails or screws since they rust easily and leave dark marks on the wood as they corrode. Don’t use pressure treated lumber since you don’t know what bad chemical were put into the wood as preservatives and them have them leach into the garden soil.

    Just made these boxes! We used two legs on each long side in addition the the corners. They are gorgeous and I can’t wait to get them planted. We also made a bed only six inches deep and will use pond liner and grow bags. Cut legs down 10” for a more proportioned look. Much better for me than getting on the ground. Thanks so much for the plans!

    Hi Phyllis 👋 we've had a ton of rain so I haven't had to water much but my water doesn't run out like that. It might be because it's only 6 inches deep? I'm really not sure but after 5 mins of running drip that shouldn't be happening.

    This is a terrific design. I recently had three elevated cedar planter boxes made before seeing this video. Chicken wire and landscape cloth were placed at the bottom instead of the wood planks shown in the video. My contractor said that a cedar wood bottom would rot over time. But the joists he placed below the cloth and chickenwire as support are already failing. He said he would add more joists to stop the bulging. This design seems much better. Are elevated planter boxes supposed to have a wood bottom? I would appreciate suggestions.

    Most elevated planter boxes that I've seen have wood slats at the bottom. I've had no issues at all.. I'm sure at some point, all the wood used will rot, but that's far down the road.

    I have a question, you say you use cedar planks for anything that is going to come in contact with soil but you are also putting a liner into the bed. If you run the liner all the way up to the top, could you theoretically swap out the cedar for a cheaper piece of wood instead. Cedar has doubled in price down where I am. Also I am on the water to the Bay (saltwater) so I was wondering if I could go pressure treated with all of the wood? Thoughts?

  • @DeesYard

    @DeesYard

    3 жыл бұрын

    I, personally won't use pressure treated for any raised garden bed im growing food in. I know there are many people that do, especially because pressure treated wood today is not suppose to have arsenic. I did build this bed prior to the crazy increase in wood prices so I completely understand the cost being way too high right now. I personally would probably consider purchasing an Oval Galvanized Stock Tank to grow in until the wood prices decreased. The liner I used was only weed fabric and is perforated so water moves through it, so that isn't much of a barrier to the wood. I've even had a buddy use just regular pine (not treated) and his raised bed has lasted years with no issues. He just knows at some point he may have to rebuild but as of right now it's sturdy. Hopefully that helps!

  • @DeesYard

    @DeesYard

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hi James, originally the plan was to make the box 32" wide but, I made a mistake during the build. So I just rolled with what I had. I didn't plan on a build any larger so I am able to comfortably reach over the garden bed (since I'm not accessing it from the back - it's up against a fence). If you plan on building this 48" wide you will definitely have to add more support for the bottom slats to be able to hold that extra weight of soil.
