How to Build a Turbo Ford Duratec V6

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

We build a lot of different engines here at MotoIQ. We also have exclusive engine programs for a number of high performance companies such as Raiden Performance who we build the Ford Duratec V6 engine--so if you want a Duratec motor built by us, you gotta go through them! In this video you check out how we improve on this venerable V6 originally developed by Porsche, Ford and Cosworth!
If you would like to purchase one of these engines please contact Raiden Performance and they will be happy to answer any of your questions.

U lucky bastard! Just love those cars, so unique and a really fun motor. Always wanted to drive one and see how it felt against the 170hp version in the Mazda mx6. They rev smooth and fast like a b-series Honda but with more torque of the v6. Wish they did a 2.8 or 3L version of it with another 30hp in a probe gt. Maybe someday I'll get the chance to do an all motor build on one

@@mostafaelsaid7371 I do not. To be honest turboing a FWD V6 is a big pain in the ass due to packaging. Your best bet would be a supercharger. You will likely grenade your transmission or axles with forced induction. I ran with a couple of SHO Taurus guys back in the day and they would show up at the track with a couple pairs of extra axles (Pep Boys lifetime warranty FTW) and would usually end up breaking a couple. My days of trying to crank a bunch of power out FWD platforms have passed. I would rather just start with a RWD car. I had a turbo B20 Civic and it just couldn't use the power anywhere except blasting down the freeway. Everywhere else was wheel hop or spinning understeer. I rebuilt that motor for NA mid range torque and it made the car a lot more fun to drive

Scat makes the old 1000hp 3.0 crank. It's out of production, was used primarily for Noble. They will make you one. I've seen a twin turbo 3.0 Duratec make 971hp on the Dyno.

@@snoofayy6150 Try using Yamabond4 or Hondabond, Permatex also makes a copy for powersports. It's a semi-drying anaerobic gasket material. Even if it moves a little, it won't leak. I've been using it since my beginning in powersports, it never leaks. Doesn't matter what the application is. All motorcycle and snowmobile engine cases are sealed with it. Including 2 strokes that operate in constant pressure and vacuum pulsing with premix oil and gas. If gasoline won't leak through ever, oil doesn't have a chance.

i have an 06 escape myself, so the same thing minus some cosmetics, and it definitely would be some more fun with 200 or 240 wheel horsepower rather than ~160 at the wheel. its currently in need of a rebuild, so i could go for a small turbo to boost it for maybe 4-6 pounds, which would definitely be enough to make a difference

This video may have convinced me of my next engine swap. I blew my 2.3L Turbo in my 98 Ranger, and have been looking at different engine platforms. I will explore Raiden Performance. I may look into a N/A version for simplicity. but much of the turbo plumbing is in the truck still. the truck was running close to ~300 (likely under, Bopart Cam/Heads, internals) so maybe this can bring me into the 400/500 range reasonably.

Rather fascinated by the Porsche background behind Duratec V6 before it went to Ford and was further developed by Cosworth, there must of been a reason why Porsche developed it originally and wonder if it is connected to their stillborn 989 and 965 projects that were anticipated to feature an 80-degree V8 yet other engines were said to be considered. What Noble achieved by adding Twin-Turbos to the Duratec V6 does an idea of what could have been if there is any credibility to my limited conjecture above.

  • @laglord

    @laglord

As much as they are a car company, Porsche is also an engineering company. Like Cosworth, they will sometimes do work for hire on other companies' projects. This could be the case here, but it's often said that this motor was designed by Porsche and sold to Ford. Perhaps these engines were in the works for the next generation of front-engine cars like the 968 and 928, and sold off when they knew they would instead focus on developing the Boxster. Either answer makes sense considering their somewhat precarious financial state in the early 90's.

Pretty much ecoboost design just NA From my experience the achilles heal of those engines is the rod bearings and camshaft phasers and apparently the fix is a melling high volume oil pump at least for the cam phasers plus sub 5k mile oil changes with anything thicker than 5w20... my 185k mile 3.7 spun a rod bearing recently and also started developing cam phaser cold start rattle shortly before the rod bearing spun...im the 3rd owner so no idea of oil change intervals before me but would be interesting to see your take on the 3.7 cyclone

You can build anything but since there isnt much aftermarket support for that engine, it mean more custom parts and more cost and longer lead times.

dunno if you guys still check these, but currently planning to build a duratec powered 87 nissan 300zx, and will be attempting to convert a taurus engine to be longitudinally mounted, and needing some information, my plan currently is to use a rear water pump engine, remove that water pump, get a pre 99 front water pump timing cover, and swap the oil pan and pickup tube for one from an s type or lincoln ls, this sounds like everything should bolt up and maybe seal based on what information is available, but wondering if you guys know of any obvious issues id run into with that.

been planning this for a while, and was planning on using an aj30, and might still just do that to make things easy, but i really dont *need* the vvt and duratec plus all the hypothetical rwd swap components comes out cheaper than the closest rwd aj i can find

@@motoiq well in my opinion, this engine is a direct upgrade over the vg30, aluminum block. Better bottom end, and timing chain as opposed to belt, so this is kind of my dream build, ik there's the very easy route of just using the already rwd aj with the rocketeer kit and a Miata or rx8 trans, and if that's the route I end up having to take that's fine. I know theres at least that way to accomplish this goal, but I just wanted to ask someone with actual experience building these if my longitudinal duratec idea is even hypothetically possible, bc it lowers the cost of the engine core significantly as where i live i cant find any rwd aj for under 1000 and I've found an 80k mile running duratec for 300, and I'm willing to be the Guinea pig for testing this. I fully understand that it's Ill advised, and I'll have nobody to blame but myself if I do this anyway and it explodes. But if it doesn't. I'll be willing to share everything I learned and did to maybe find more applications for these underrated engines.

I do want to ask though if you know the best place to find diagrams for the coolant passages and the differences between the front and rear water pump setups, or if i should just shell out for a taurus haynes manual. Either way thanks for your time I appreciate you even replying.

The big problems are a lack of parts support on the aftermarket side, especially in the valvetrain, most stuff that was made has been discontinued so that means custom parts, and the worst problem, the OEM parts are drying up for these engines as well. A VG30DETT is probably a better drop in choice or a more contemporary motor like a VQ35HR or even an LS.

The other thing is OEM parts support of the Duratecs is becoming iffy. Every one we build we have issues finding the needed OEM parts. Like I said in the last post, LS is a good choice and is more compact for swaps except its a little longer. A small block Chevy is even more compact.

This video should be titled, "advertisement for Raiden Performance" and not "how to build a turbo Duratec motor...yes I skipped some parts of the video which I won't be faulted on as from the get go I was not viewing what I felt should have been expected. Now I'm not here trying to be a troll and throw around negative comments because I feel misled, however I am here to be a viewer with a sizable interest in these such things and could potentially be a viewer and my opinion is as was stated. That opinion again with more descriptors, this video through its title had me believe I was going to view a build of a duratec being turbo'ed and all I found was what I viewed as a shop advertisement disguised as an engine review video. Now I very likely represent a very small number of the status quo but there are some like me who may also be turned off after watching this video having gone into it the same as I had. Really I am at this point just offering feedback to the makers of this channel as someone who will forever be turned off by what ever I just watched and I'll never had become a customer but now il never be a subscriber because well there are too many channels out there to be running around picking that which "sometimes" offer me interesting content. I just think you wasted my time...I hope you took the time to read all the way through my comment and I hope I wasted at least a few minutes of your day. :) So maybe I was a small bit of a troll 😂.
