Art restorer here. The proper stretchers are connected by grooves and tenons. Tapping (or loosening) the wooden wedges (keys) embedded in the notches on the inside of the stretcher allows you to adjust the tension of the canvas. The canvas will change with changes in air humidity and temperature. The rigid stretcher may cause irreversible damage to the paint layer. Your frame is only suitable for amateur decoration.

For larger stretchers I use brick molding for the outer frame. It already has a raised bead on one edge.

It's not actually a stretcher if you can't expand the corners with canvas keys :P But I'm going to start building my frames like this.

Hi Jon: great stuff. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge and time. One issue I’ve found is that it’s often hard to find straight lengths that don’t have some twist, bow or cup. What are your thoughts about using MDF instead of wood? It seems more dimensionally flat; I can imagine that it’s much heavier than a soft or hardwood board of similar dimensions, but any disadvantages other than that? Thanks

I purchased painted canvases that were removed from the frames, and now need to re-stretch them.

You make it look so easy! You wouldn’t have a project video on how to build a canvas stretcher to a canvas which is pre-printed with the art and came with no stretcher? Curious how one would lay that out and obtain measurements and then stretch the canvas and the finished piece still look professional?!

You could put an air cylinder on a K4 jig and have something like the old metal one.

could you use 1x2 instead of 1x3 boards for the beams? also, does the way you add the pocket holes prevent warping?

Really great video, I've just bought a makita 2712 315mm table saw, can you recommend a blade to use for the neatest cuts, how many teeth to go for? I'm just looking up how to make them before I start, I usually get shredded edges though when using mitres as if the blades not got enough teeth

Excellent vid. I was curious to why the perimeter edge is to high away from the frame. I am an artist & I paint using the 3 primary mediums & have never seen/used a canvas with such a high ridge. Are there benefits other than the potential "bleeding"? Very helpful to someone who may just start stretching my own canvases. Thanks.

If the canvas is touching the frame, then when you apply paint the canvas presses directly against the wood and takes more paint. The end result is a tracing of the frame on the painting. It's like making a graphite tracing of a coin on paper.

Hi Jon, why do you place the lip with the moulding? Can you just stretch the canvas over the frame regardless of the lip?

I'm trying to find some good info on stretcher bar joinery but everywhere I look it seems that no one knows what a "stretcher" is. If you've glued and screwed your corners together then you have no way to wedge them outwards to actually stretch the canvas out over the years. So many people seem to think that "stretcher" simply implies a wooden frame of any kind that you then stretch a canvas over. In fact it refers to a frame having the ability to actually stretch the canvas tight many years after having a canvas attached. Improper storage of paintings resulting in canvas deformity (indentations) is one of many reasons one would want the ability to stretch a canvas out. Your method here means never having that ability and so it is not a "stretcher" but simply a fixed frame.

What would be the alternative to using pocket hole screws?

Why do you cut the lengths "heavy"? An explanation would be helpful.

Is this a stretcher? As a professional fine art framer I see this as a stainer !

Jon, why do you edge ban it if you cover it with canvas. Also, in the other video, it doesn't look like molding is on the frame.

Hope I'm not being presumptuous answering for Jon, but I've built stretchers like this before. The trim keeps the canvas up and clear of the main frame so it doesn't rest on it and show through. Store bought stretchers are wedge shaped for this reason.

i may have missed it i tried watching twice...what kind of wood do you suggest?

No need for a table saw, but you will need $600 worth of cabinet making tools. Hmmmmm??? Still, it is really great to see the canvas paint frame step into the modern age. I love the doorstop molding.

Except you can't key out the stretcher to tension the painting.

one flaw with this design is the side facing the canvas isn't chamfered...

I am not a specialist but I think it is not a stretcher as it does not use wedges or any other mechanism to "stretch". It looks me a frame.
