How to Build a Motel Film Set in 6 Weeks
Фильм және анимация
Second year BA Production Design students at the Dutch Film Academy in Amsterdam design their own set by first sketching out ideas, building miniatures of said sketches and then choosing which one they like best. After this, the entire 10 man class designs a large scale miniature which they end up building in full scale throughout six intensive weeks. After this all second year students shoot five different short films inside the set.
Set Builders: Merel ter Braak, Amber Smeele, Nina Stankova, Mey Rahimi, Kathleen Hilbers, Lotty Mulleners, Daan Goudswaard, Anne Luijendijk, Meret Wellmann, Emmy Rommers
Edit: Anne Luijendijk
Shot on a GoPro Hero4 Silver shooting one frame every 30 seconds.

Wow guys, dit is zo sick! Kudos :D
Do you know what the sqft of the film set and the space you used was?
Looks fantastic. What was being trowelled on the walkway?
So many questions need answered
How much did it cost to make?

Wood panels cut into stonelike shapes with plaster over the top, then multiple thin layers of paint. Thank you!

Six weeks building, shot at one frame every 30 seconds.

What do you do with IT when you are done? Do you re use?

Parts are reused, others sadly go into the trash. A lot had to be made custom, so couldn't be repurposed. I saved some parts though and still have them in my room to this day ^^

There’s no American-style motels in the Netherlands
Does a still photograph of the completed set exist anywhere?

I realised shortly after uploading I should've added one into the edit... I don't think there's a picture online anywhere, your closest shot is to look at the thumbnail of this video
The Dutch... Known for dams and film sets. LOL 😂🎥🎬
Anyone know why they can’t use a real motel to film?

The Netherlands doesn't have any classic American motels. Furthermore, this gave us the freedom to design and create every single aspect of the set.
Erg fijn
Fellow filmmaker here and would love to do something similar. Do you have a ballpark figure for the cost of this project?
Why so many paint colors ??

First a base coat (different colours) for better adhesion of the texture we applied on the wallls (the white plaster) then base colour pink, then a white wash over top for the final colour :)

Adventure Finders Thank you!
Why not just film at a motel. Saves thousands of dollars and time
I thought everything was done by computers.
Waste of money would of been cheaper to shoot at a real motel

If the Netherlands had any, yes.

Not necessarily. City permits, law enforcement / security, paying gardeners to be quiet, weather delays, location rental fees, insurance, etc etc adds up very quickly.

If you had a motel that would let you rent it out completely for next to nothing, maybe. That's assuming you find one that meets your requirements and is willing to work with your schedule.
